Homeowners Beware - Misrepresented Expertise, Defective Workmanship, and a Costly Mistake
Before hiring SSC General Contractors or Shane Christiansen, please look carefully at the attached photos. They document what happened after we invested nearly $70,000 in what was represented as a professional exterior renovation.
In September 2022, Shane installed new concrete patios, stairs, a front porch overlay, and a cedar fence with gates. We hired him because he represented that he had the experience and knowledge to complete the project properly. The results tell a different story.
The concrete began spalling within just six months and quickly progressed to cracking, scaling, pitting, and severe discoloration. Instead of lasting for decades, it rapidly deteriorated. The front porch had to be replaced three times, and the third installation cracked, lifted, and developed a large hole within a year. We still pick up broken pieces of concrete on a regular basis and have to keep it covered for safety reasons.
The fence workmanship was equally poor. During construction, Shane told us, "This was Jake's first fence." At the time, we trusted that an experienced contractor would properly supervise the work and ensure it met professional standards, so the comment did not concern us. Unfortunately, the finished product tells a different story. Improper and undersized fasteners were used, the gates are too heavy for the hinges, they sag, don't close properly, and are literally falling apart. Even the gate latch was poorly installed. The overall workmanship reflects a lack of experience and contractor oversight
Instead of quality craftsmanship, we were left feeling like our home had become a training ground or test project.
As the problems continued with unsuccessful attempts to repair it only made the concrete surfaces uneven, unattractive, and dangerously slippery in winter. Shane eventually stopped responding. His insurance company inspected the project and informed us that while certain material costs were covered, defective workmanship was not, leaving us responsible for the damage.
We are now facing the enormous cost of demolishing and replacing both the concrete and the fence, likely exceeding what we originally paid. Instead of increasing our home's value, this project left us with failing concrete, a deteriorating fence, safety hazards, reduced property value, and substantial financial loss.
Please study the attached photos before making your decision. They show the spalling concrete, failed repairs, and deteriorating porch. Based on our experience, we cannot and will not recommend SSC General Contractors or Shane Christiansen. If you value your home, your investment, honesty, and quality workmanship, look elsewhere. read more
