The large party options offered a menu with three choices of starter and main or two different banquets with steaks, wings, Mac and cheese etc. We opted for the large party menu and as requested by the restaurant placed our orders in advance midweek. Normally pre-booking gives me a bit of a headache. I'm indecisive at the best of times when I'm out to eat so having to choose days in advance makes me worry that the notion would have worn off by then. I'd ordered corned beef hash croquettes for my starter and the rump steak with peppercorn sauce and beef dripping cooked chips. And luckily by the time Saturday night came I was really looking forward to having a delicious medium-rare steak! The restaurant is upstairs and is quite small, but they had changed the layout slightly to ensure that our group didn't feel cramped in which was a nice touch. We had a drinks order taken (a very deep, fruity Zinfandel for myself) and then our starters were brought to us quickly after. Three huge, golden brown potato croquettes with a side of crunchy red cabbage slaw were placed in front of me. Was this the starter?! The breadcrumb coating was crisp and coated a fluffy, tangy centre. There was a good balance of flavours, with some spring onion lifting the milder potato and corned beef flavours. In my head I was going to eat two and save room for my steak but they were delicious and I ate all three. Our plates were cleared and the mains were brought out. I immediately regretted polishing off my starter as another huge plate of food faced me. My steak was a perfect medium rare but the peppercorn sauce was full of whole peppercorns and was a little bit too hot for my liking. The onion ring was encased in a light crisp batter but the onion was slightly undercooked. The chips on the other hand were unanimously decided upon as the highlight of everyone's meal. Well seasoned, fluffy, a good bite to the outside and perfectly golden. Just delicious. We were very well taken care of here and they gave us 20% off our first round of drinks in Bar Bodega downstairs too. A really lovely place, with wonderful food and attentive staff. If you're looking for some proper steakhouse style food then Rookwood should be on your go to list.

My husband and I go quite often but it was our friends first visit. In October I rang to book a table for 10/12/16. Something came up and so I rang to change the booking for last night. We paid 8.00 for a taxi and arrived 15 mins early for our table. We were all hungry and looking forward to the steaks. On arrival we waited a few mins before we were welcomed by a gentleman who asked if he could help. We said we had a table booked. He could not find the booking. I explained that I had changed the date, so he looked at the 10th and my booking was still there. No bar meals were being served, the restaurant was full and so was the cabaret lounge. It was 8pm on a cold wintery evening and the gentleman could offer us nothing. I asked for the manager and he said he was the manager. He didn't offer us the taxi fare, a drink or anything in way of apology for his staffs error. Not very good customer service, is it Liam? Loyal customers are the ones you should want to keep happy, not send away angry.

There is a separate dining area at the back if you want a more á la carte dining experience. The bar has recently been refurbished and really looks the part. There's lots of quiet alcoves and intimate seating areas. This makes it a more enjoyable place to have a drink rather than some of the more crowded, rowdy bars in the area. It's also a good place to hold a function or to meet up for a few drinks prior to heading off to an event. Recommended if you're in the area and want to avoid South Road.

The importance of first impressions is overrated and the abiding memory is usually of the last act…read more That is true in politics (no one remembers any redeeming features in Blair or Brown), in theatre, in literature (with the possible exception of a Tale of Two Cities) and it is certainly true in dinner. That being the case, I start with dessert. A Baked Alaska was once regarded as a miracle of gastronomy: cold ice-cream encased in meringue, flash-baked in a blazing oven. The dish ought to be a perfect clash of textures, with the warm crispness of the meringue set against the icy softness of the ice-cream. In many ways the dish (so named in 1876) is the ancestor of the spherification, suspension and distillation utilised so spectacularly by the incumbent ranks of alchemists occupying head chef positions throughout the land. Sadly, at Miller & Carter, Aughton, on father's day, despite ordering a Baked Alaska, what was received was merely an "Alaska". That is, an unbaked Baked Alaska. One which had been removed from the freezer, taken nowhere near an oven and then served after a blow-torch had been casually and briefly waved in front of it. I am confident in that appraisal because, first, our table also took delivery of a crème brulee which had certainly been subject to the blow-torch and, secondly because I put my theory directly to my waitress who offered no denial. The unbaked Baked Alaska is not a miracle of gastronomy, let me assure you. The meringue mixture was goo, suspended in place temporarily because its molecules were huddling together in the cold. The erratic blow-torch scorching assisted in no respect. The ice-cream middle was cold, indeed so as to be impenetrable with a mere spoon. It was a terrible way to end a meal. It was an insult to the history of the dish, to the restaurant and to the individual who permitted it to be served. Other than by making a conscious effort, it is a struggle to remember what had come before: last impressions. However, up until that point the meal had been enjoyable. A starter of duck rillette came individually potted and sealed with a plug of yellow fat. It was perfectly seasoned, served with sweet red-onion chutney and just sufficient toast, which is the perfect amount. Then onto the main. Being a steakhouse, whilst there is variety on the menu, ordering something else is bit like spitting in the face of the concept. The steak also provides comedy value, with the presentation of a needlessly over-sized knife which, happily, is not indicative of the meat being as tough as old boots and needing a cutlass to get through. The ribeye was recommended as best cooked medium and, as requested, did indeed come medium. That is practically a triumph by typical standards. The peppercorn sauce - served on the side - didn't so much kick as prod discreetly, but was a good accompaniment, although the parsley butter melted directly onto the steak seemed a little like over-kill. Rings of fried red-onions melted sweetly. All was well and dessert menus were presented with a flourish and accepted with relish. A Baked Alaska presented the opportunity to cap off a nice lunch with something memorable...and therein lies the problem...

As a rule, any restaurant that you walk into which has kitchen roll on the tables as standard, is…read morelikely to show you a good time. Smokies has two venues, one in Darwen and one in Chorley. As Chorley is nearer to me, we decided to try this one. I like that when you walk in, it already has a warm atmosphere, created by varying lighting, high ceilings, and lots of wood in the decor and furniture. In fact later in the evening, one of the owners would tell me that she loves upcycling, and the wood from the bar came from a Scottish distillery, and the tables throughout were made from old casks from the same distillery, simply sanded and oiled, and that what I thought was a table number on our table was in fact one of the original barrel numbers! I love a bit of provenance! I was surprised to find that the restaurant goes further back into another room, and even has another floor with even more seating for diners! As we entered we were welcomed warmly by who I assume is one of the owners (mentioned above). She checked for our booking and pointed us to our table. Another member of staff brought our menus and explained about the specials menu, and specials on the chalkboards throughout the restaurant. The menu is a vegan's nightmare and a carnivore's wet dream! Delicious meaty starters and mains, a section dedicated to meat from the smoker, and even a couple of sharing platters all described in a way to make your mouth water before you get chance to order. This is a proper southern States style bbq joint, their mantra is "real food, real smoke, real slow", and despite that very much being accurate given their quality offerings, the prices are incredibly decent. We decided on the "couples platter" which was beef brisket, pulled pork, half a rack of ribs, chicken wings, home-made sausage, fries, coleslaw and beans... and it was just £20! In fact including the starter and drinks, the whole bill came to less than £35! CRAZY! So before our platter main, we ordered some nachos as a starter. You know what nachos as a starter tends to look like if you go somewhere like Chiquito etc... about 6 doritos with a blob of melted coagulation-dried cheese and some jalapenos on top. We... weren't expecting what we got from Smokies! We got a huge tray full of nachos, covered in nacho cheese sauce, freshly made guacamole, pineapple salsa, (you also get jalapenos, but we asked for them without) with side pots of guacamole and sour cream. It made me swear when it arrived. They were miles beyond the usual doritos-nachos starter you usually get. They were fresh, with perfect crunch, the salsa was fruity and fresh, the cheese was excellent, and it was incredibly moreish. We found ourselves even mopping up the tiny bits at the end with our fingers... thank god for that kitchen roll and wet wipes! Our main platter arrives just after a side portion of fries each. I ordered plain with pitmaster's salt, and my partner ordered cheeseburger fries from the specials menu, which was the same fries but with bits of burger meat, cheese, and chipotle relish! They came with really lovely fresh coleslaw, and what he says as some of the best beans he's ever had... beans with brisket mixed in! HEAVEN! The fries themselves were hot, crisp, and perfectly seasoned. Absolutely perfect. Then just as they arrived, we were brought out our platter! The owner I mentioned earlier then came over to us and explained to us fully about our platter, what meats were what, how the meats were prepared, down to information about the pink smoke ring on the brisket. It's really nice to see that amount of passion and enthusiasm go into food! This platter was excellent. The sausage was flavourful with a spice which didn't get you at first, but which snuck up behind you and slapped you in the fact afterwards! The chicken wings were so tender that you could suck the meat off the bones. The pulled pork was absolutely perfect, and the brisket was so tender that I swear it literally melted in my mouth. This is the best brisket I've had! Even the pickled cucumber provided was pickled by them in brine using the flavours from the smoker, and was described as a 'palate cleanser' as it was fresh and tangy. Really good! I could imagine it on a burger quite easily! There were also their own blend of sauces on each table comprising of a sweet BBQ sauce, American style mustard, and Louisiana style hot sauce. I imagine they were lovely, but as the meat itself was so amazing as it was provided, I really didn't get chance to try them as they weren't needed! Maybe next time! At the point I was about to try the ribs when the chef/pit-master came into the dining area, and was even introduced to us. When we talked to him about the quality of our meal, his enthusiasm and passion for the real deal of southern BBQ was evident, from how he does it and his smokers, to the difference between competition cooking and regular cooking. It was genuinely fascinating to hear, and as I said, a real
