I just adore any place that makes you feel like an artist. Don't let the exterior apartment-like building fool you. Behind the doors you'll find Spudnik Press- an art studio where all are welcome regardless of skill. I 100% promise you you'll leave feeling extremely fulfilled and in touch with your inner artist. I came here with a group of co-workers to create a custom group screen print t-shirt. The instructors are incredibly patient, kind, and really care about their craft. They made the process simple, interactive, and were present with words of encouragement. They directly helped every person on our team create their t-shirt with little judgment. The studio itself is very relaxing and inspiring, especially since it's filled with artwork and interesting lighting fixtures. They also feature works of art for sale, which I browsed while my team took turns screen printing their t-shirts. I also just adore that they are printing co-op collective. As Angela S pointed out, artists can come and share resources, skills and equipment for a small membership fee. Totally worth the price if you're into screen printing, or want to learn!

As of now you can't even have a similar experience to what I and others had. Because of the school's poor conditions and horibble management most of those staff and faculty have left or are in the process of leaving. They are losing faculty that have been there for several decades because of how little they actually care for there faculty and students. The management and maintenance for this school is in shambles. I know of many students, including myself that have been screwed by the school because of its poor organization and communication. The other reviews complaining about the cockroaches are absolutely correct. The miniscule two floors that this school bairly takes up are filthy. The old man that runs the place is too cheep and greedy to pay for custodians clean. The bathrooms were not properly maintained and the ones on the second floor smelled like raw sewage. The floors everywhere were visibly dirty and the student stairwell smelled like urine and nothing was ever cleaned. If you suffer from mental illness or need to work and attend classes at the same time they do not care. They don't have the resources to help you if you are struggling and their classes are too demanding and make it impossible to balance work and school efficiently. It's a shame what this school has become and the worst part is the people that run this place don't care. I truly hope this place gets what it has coming and shuts down.

If you are looking to develop your drawing skills, I highly recommend their Beginners Course in Drawing. One of the reasons I love this online corse it is because you can work at your own pace and you can go back and watch the videos as many times as you need to. David is extremely responsive. At some point I decided that Marwen must be the corporate headquarters of some outdoorsy clothing brand because the name reminded me of Erehwon, the mountain outfitter. Well, mountain outfitter it's not; this is what Marwen is all about (from their website): "Marwen was founded to provide Chicago's youth with stimulating and diverse opportunities to channel their adolescent energy into personally rewarding and developmentally appropriate outlets. Chicago is a city rich in history, architecture, art, and culture, and it is Marwen's intent to leverage these resources, providing our students with an out-of-school program that provides access to opportunity, while remaining highly relevant to their individual and collective experiences." The fabulous Kelly S told me about "Show Me Marwen" which gave me a chance to check the place out, for free to boot! The event was really cool, but a little crowded. I liked that they asked attendees to not only wear name tags, but add color-coded stickers to show how they were affiliated with Marwen (student, alumni, parent, friend, etc.), it really gave it a community feel. The alumni and student artwork on display was amazing and ranged from photographs to paintings to pottery to claymation videos. I was in awe of all of the creativity in the room. The only downside was that when I left Marwen I felt about as creative as a cucumber.

I was surrounded by such positive, welcoming people of all ages. Throughout the night, we sang karaoke, played cards, shot pool and listened to good music. What really stood out to me was how safe, inclusive, and comfortable the environment felt. Everyone was so kind and genuine. But what truly touched my heart was how the community embraced my brother, who is special needs. There was no judgment only acceptance, laughter, and open arms. For the first time in a long time, I didn't feel like I had to be on guard, watching to make sure he was being treated with respect because everyone just welcomed. It was a relaxing night filled with connection and joy. I would absolutely come back and recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, warm, and safe space. Thank you for such an unforgettable expeience.

LBP provided the space, catered the food (via their onsite cafe, Carver 47), connected us to amazing balloon and floral vendors, and provided other accoutrements (e.g., tables and chairs, table coverings, a stage, sound and tech support, package management). LBP's one-stop shop especially helpful given that our planning team resided outside of Chicago. There is so much to applaud from the experience: the warm and inviting space exuded elegance; the feast was as beautiful as it was delicious; and the LBP team's interactions with us (from planning to completion) was the epitome of grace and hospitality. They accommodated every request and did so with an exceptional level of excellence. When we asked that the menu include a vegetarian and Halal dish, they ensured guests had multiple options. When we requested assistance erecting our banner, they took on the task of assembling the entire structure, even machine washing and drying it when they noticed a stain. Compared to other spaces we considered (and have used in the past) across the city, LBP's offerings and support stood head and shoulders above and their love was palpable in their attention to details. That they have a heart-centered mission and work in support of youth and community was tasty icing on an already amazing cake. Thank you, Little Black Pearl team, for making our event a world-class experience!
