After I checked in at the desk, it was a matter of just a few minutes, and I was escorted to a consultation room. A very nice nurse came in and took my stats and asked me some probing questions about why I was there, and what my expectations were. She was so nice, and informative and said the Dr would be in shortly to talk to me about pros and cons of the surgery I was think of having. Dr Rueben came in and examined me. We had a nice chat about what the surgery would entail, and the pros and cons. I didn't fill rushed, and he answered my questions in depth. The nurse came back in with two price options. I could go home and think about it, or I could book surgery now, since he is booked several months out. There is a $500 deposit to book a date. I decided to think about scheduling a date right now since this is an elective surgery, and it needs to be paid in full before any surgery will be performed.

That being said I have struggled with my weight for my entire life. I'm 6'6" tall and at my highest, I was 425 lbs. My wife was 375 lbs. Eventually my doctor told me that I was going to have a heart attack at 40. I struggled with hypertension, sleep problems, cholesterol issues and worst of all uncontrollable Type II diabetes. My wife and I went to RMAP at the end of 2009 when we found out our insurance would start covering weight loss surgery the following year. We both decided on having the Bileopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch surgery. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They helped us get through the onerous process of insurance approval. They were there every step of the way. Dr. Simper performed the surgery on both of us in March of 2010 just hours apart. The surgery was easy and the recovery, while painful wasn't as bad as I though. It's now four years later and we've settled in around 240 and 200 lbs respectively. So combined we've lost almost 400 lbs. Life is amazing now in our new bodies. My diabetes is cured. My hypertension is controlled. My cholesterol ratios are great. This surgery saved my life. It's also amazing for our sex life. Her parents also had similar issues and they decided on having weight loss surgery last year. Her dad had the same procedure as us and her mom had Gastric Bypass. Both have seen similar amazing results. Dr. Simper has been amazing through all of this. He is kind, courteous and extremely conscientious. I can't recommend him enough. If you are considering weight loss surgery I strongly strongly strongly recommend RMAP and Dr. Simper specifically. He is as good as it gets. Again, I can't push enough. Please please please try to lose weight the right way. It's not an easy thing to go though and their are bad side effects you will live through the rest of your life. However, if you have tried over and over and over and decide this is the way to go, please use RMAP. They are the best in Utah.
