I don't know how many people stop to reflect how important public transport is, even how…read moremeaningful. It can serve as a meeting place, a hub of connection, even a chance to reflect. The other morning at the bustop I observed a man on a pink glittery Harley (no kidding) whizz past, and was greeted by an older man polite enough to simply say hello to a stranger sharing space for a moment. I contrasted types of people with their choice of dogs as they walked past, saw an elderly couple who I've seen many times before, they're inseperable. I sat and wondered at the giant bunya pines and was then delivered home minus road rage, without worrying about the traffic or speeding, by drivers who know which one's my stop and are unfailingly polite and kind. The drivers themselves on occasion act as centres of the community, knowing everyone and greeting with a smile. One plays Triple J at a discreet volume which makes me feel old, one plays ABC FM at an indiscreet volume which makes me feel young. One has an ongoing range of nail art which always makes me grin. So thanks for the buses, many of us would be horribly isolated without them, and less connected in all kinds of ways.
