My daughter had the absolute BEST time at Summer Farm School at Spring Valley Farm! Every day she came home happily exhausted after a full day of hands on adventures and outdoor fun. She made new friends, loved riding horses, splashing and exploring in the creek, and spending time with all of the amazing animals. One of her favorite parts was getting to pet and interact with so many different animals, including a zonkey, camel, baby goats, baby cows, guinea pigs, a water buffalo, donkeys, horses, and chickens. There was always something new and exciting to experience! It's so refreshing to find a program that gets kids outside, away from screens, and learning through play and real life experiences. The staff created such a fun, welcoming, and safe environment, and you can truly tell how much they care about the children and the animals. My daughter is already asking if she can go back for another week! We highly recommend Spring Valley Farm to any family looking for an unforgettable experience! read more

We came to Roanoke for vacation and this was one of the things we had planned to do as a family. Robbie was our trail guide and he was very patient and gentle with our daughter even when she got frustrated and had a mini melt down. He did a great job of instructing her on what to do while she was riding Boomer. I got to ride on Grace and my wife got to ride on Ranger. We had an awesome time and can't wait to come back again. If your looking for something to do as a family and really enjoy the outdoors I highly recommend looking into Spring Valley Farm. read more

A Place That Looks Fine Until You Know Better -- And I Do I have owned and cared for horses my entire life. I know what the dangers of putting inexperienced riders on poorly managed horses look like. So when I tell you that this place is not what it appears to be, please hear me: I am not speaking from emotion alone. I am speaking from decades of experience. To the untrained eye, this stable might seem acceptable -- even charming. That is exactly what makes it dangerous. The horses here are bought and sold with alarming frequency, cycled through to unknown fates, including slaughter. The staff either do not know enough to recognize poor conditions, or simply do not care. Either way, these animals are paying the price. But it doesn't stop with the horses. This facility also keeps pigs, turtles, and many other animals -- including a camel. A camel, kept tied up. Just tethered, day after day, as though it were a prop rather than a living, feeling creature with complex needs. I also observed diarrhea among the other animals -- a telltale sign that something is very wrong. It is heartbreaking to witness. The living spaces are inadequate. The care is inadequate. And the people profiting from this place are counting on the fact that most visitors won't know the difference. I am writing this because the animals cannot. If you are considering visiting, riding, or bringing your children here for a "fun farm experience," please do your research first. And if you love animals -- truly love them -- look past the surface. What is happening here is not okay, and it should not be allowed to continue unchallenged. These animals deserve better. They deserve people who will speak up. read more

Went up for a quick getaway, stayed in one of the cabins for a night, and then a horse ride the next day. The whole thing was great, people were helpful and quite nice. Cabin was everything you would expect from a small cabin in the woods. Clean and well maintained , nice and quiet area with each cabin having a fire pit and small grill. The horse ride was great, and the guide was very knowledgeable and patient. Will definitely repeat this trip . read more

This place could be such a nice place if it wasnt for the cons that own and run it. Theyre known to abuse, neglect, and ship animals off to sales that end them in slaughter. I have sadly seen this all too often. Just recently helped get a beautiful paint stallion out of a bad situation that Michelle herself put him in. Lied to his previous owner saying he would have a forever home only to be found in a kill pen. Not to mention the accidents they have gotten several people in to out on trail rides. Beware and do not trust this place or anyone associated with them. read more

Went for a trail ride with a large group of varied riding abilities and comfort levels. Trail ride was really cool and not your standard "nose to tail" ride. We were able to ride amongst the cows, cross a small stream and some cool views. Definitely recommend! read more

I wanted to love our experience. I was really looking forward to riding the beautiful horses! Sadly though we booked our trip under the impression that we could cancel at any time if it started raining once we arrived. That is what was agreed upon over the phone. Unfortunately it did start raining once we got there. We also arrived on time but our ride was 45 mins late and we could not stay to wait for our horse ride because we were from out of town and I had to return home. I wish we could have stayed to enjoy our time, but what was most upsetting is that we were refused a refund even after we were told that we could cancel due to weather. We would have loved to speak to Michelle in person but she was not at the farm at all at that time and we relied on other employees in good faith that they would relay to her that we had to leave and now we are being denied our money back. read more

My mother and I were excited to come visit Spring Valley Farm on our vacation to SML. We were extremely disappointed when we arrived and we're not greeted by anyone, we waited outside the office for 10 minutes, called the office and even walked around the barn to find someone and there was no one to be found. When we did ask for help, we were very dismissed. When we did find the "Petting zoo" our selves we realized that the service was the least disappointing part about our visit. As two people who have grown up in a barn, we know how animals are supposed to be treated. The horses were poorly groomed, the stalls were filled with poop, and covered in more flies than usual. The goats stalls were covered in poop and we could not tell if they were breathing or not. The petting zoo was more depressing than happy. The living conditions and quality of life is less than acceptable for these animals. I urge the owners of this farm to take more time out of their days to improve their animals quality of life and service. read more

Animals in the petting zoo they brought to the Peaks of Otter horse and hound festival had no water readily available and were clearly exhausted from the heat. One baby animal was only 3 days old, had its hind end covered in diarrhea which they weren't even attempting to clean despite the fact that from the way it was wriggling you could tell it was uncomfortable. I heard another conference attendee identify herself as a vet and express concern and she was brushed off, as was i when i raised concern. read more

DO NOT BUY A HORSE FROM THIS FARM!! They are dishonest horse dealers. They will lie about a horse's age, and even worse, they will lie about a horse being appropriate for a beginner, which could lead to someone sustaining serious injury. When I confronted Michelle about these things, she had the nerve to blame the rider for the problem with the horse. The rider who is admittedly a complete beginner, and we thought we were buying a safe horse for! She offered to come out to our house and see if she could figure out why the horse was acting out. I tried to take her up on that offer, but then she disappeared and never set a date. I didn't hear back from her for months. I did not have time for another project horse, but put the time into the horse anyway so my husband would have a safe horse to ride, and so far things have been better. Bottom line though, we paid the money for a "beginner-friendly" horse, and that is what we should have received. We also paid for a 12 year old horse, not a 20 year old horse!! read more

Most…read morefacilities this size run with more help, but when you understand how they take care of your horse you'll understand how they do it with only two people. Unless you have a very strong minded large gelding, I would recommend not letting them put your horse in the backfield. Those horses are big and aggressive. If you pay $650 for stall board, that only means that they will eat inside. Horses are not led into the stalls, they run into the stalls and they leave the stall doors open all day which leaves opportunity for multiple horses to get into one stall. Somewhere in this practice my horse was injured, it was unwitnessed but when I left two hours prior to feeding time the horse was perfectly sound and when I came back he was dragging his left front leg. Unless you pay extra charges they will not put your horse in during the day when it's hot, they will not put your horse in during storms. That's pasture board to me. Second read that board contract very carefully, any additional services always cost more money they are up front about that, but no concessions are made even when your horses left 3 weeks prior to their end date. They do not have any holding pens for incoming horses, so there is no quarantine area. There is no small paddocks for rehabbing horses for individual turn out, so it's not a good rehab facility in my opinion. Outside arena is very pretty, but it is very deep in the back left hand corner. Trails were very nice. All in all I'm going to say that it wasn't worth the money I've spent, owners are not long-term professional horse people, but if you like an air conditioned bathroom it's a great place.

After visiting several sites and interviewing the owners/managers, I found that only one such site actually exceeded all of my expectations: y Tiempo. So for almost two years now, my horses have had all their equine needs met (shelter, feeding, farrier/vet visits), along with my daily visits after work. But most important, there is a bond between the great folks at y Tiempo and myself and my horses that money could not buy. When one horse of mine (Star, my friend for almost 12 years) came down with colic a year ago and sadly had to be euthanized, the compassion shown by the whole y Tiempo team to myself and my wife AND the remaining horse, was incredible. Suffice it to say that a very difficult time was made less traumatic. And immediately a pasture mate (with owner's consent) was found for my other horse. After a few attempts at matching personalities, a new buddy was found for my horse. And ultimately I adopted another rescue horse. So while the horses are happy and healthy, the views of the mountains fantastic and the whole grounds tranquil, it is the equine knowledge and human compassion of the y Tiempo team which give me "peace of mind" and my horses "a piece of heaven on earth."

My husband surprised me with a trail ride at Spring Valley Farm. Upon arrival, the property was absolutely breathtaking and picturesque! It was clear that the owners and staff take pride in not only the property, but the animals as well. I believe first impressions are everything, and on that alone, I think they knocked it out of the park! We were the first ride of the day. After we were greeted and signed the necessary paperwork, we were introduced to our guide, Jac, and our horses. I can't say enough good things about Jac! He was friendly, funny, and an overall wonderful person to work with. We went over our riding experience - my husband had none, and I had some, but my last ride at a different farm ended with me getting thrown, so I was a little nervous. Jac listened and then placed us on horses that he felt would fit best. My husband rode Snowhawk, and I rode Outlaw. Jac rode Hangover, which was hysterically fitting because the horse liked to sidestep quite a bit. We agree with Jac that Hangover needs a girlfriend named Bender! That would be the perfect pair! Jac guided us over to the riding ring to saddle up, answering our questions along the way. He walked us through every step, and made sure the saddles were secure before setting off. He offered us options of trails, and we asked him to pick his favorite. I'm glad we did - his choice was perfect. The horses were pros! They were good natured, and really well behaved. At different parts of the trail, Jac would encourage us that we could trot or even canter - if we felt comfortable. We never felt pressured. About mid-ride, we stopped for a small break to capture a photo opp, and a recheck of the saddles. On our way back we saw plenty of farm life, and the views continued to amaze! Not once through the entire ride did we feel rushed. Upon our arrival at the barn, Jac continued to be helpful making sure we landed on two feet when we hit the ground - which we did. :) I would definitely recommend a trail ride at Spring Valley Farm to friends, family and strangers alike! It's an experience you will not forget. And if you are lucky enough to have Jac as your trail guide, please tell him Chad & Lacy say hello. We can't wait to go back! read more

this place is a ripoff..they suppose to bring me my paint mare named dixie ..said there out of town and there saying to cover theres asses that 2,000 was non refundable well thats bullshit !!! i did not cancel this.. i simply said bring me my horse i paid for or my 2,000 back on my account.. again im never ever letting this go.. no way ..........my purpose in life now is too let everyone know about this spring valley farm.. you all going to hear me for a very very very long long long time.... and when the days comes when i cant voice anymore there will definitely be someone else thats going to pick up where i left off another thing i should let the viewers know they spring valley farm was posting on there facebook page that they need help at the farm... they will pay 8 .00 an hour and were paying cash to them..i guess someone caught that and made them take it down then they posted after they edit it ..im just going to say this ..i posted quite a few text messages i screenshot and posted to there facebook... they hurried up and deleted them.... all of them.... now people i ask you if chad simmons & michelle rose did everything right why the hell would they delete it ... its gonna catch up with you two crooks read more

June 2026 My husband, brother-in-law and grandson spent a week at the Spring Valley Ranch, They love to ride and were able to rent horses by the day for a reasonable fee. They could ride from 8 am to 8 pm if they wanted or shorter rides any time of the day. The staff was accommodating, and with a call, had horses ready. With over 600 acres to ride around, they were able to see most of these acres and had many different horses to ride. The Farm has many summer activities for children including a petting farm, wagon rides and camps. We have been there many times and enjoyed all our visits. The prices are listed on the Spring Valley website. It is a beautiful site and the goal of the Ranch is to provide a wonderful experience for non-riders and seasoned riders and from short rides, rides by the day and even rent a horse for the month. Seasoned riders are allowed to venture out on their own but still expected to treat all the animals with the utmost respect. The ranch is located about 15 minutes from a beautiful section of Smith Mountain Lake and Bridgewater Pontoon rentals. THE CRAVERS read more

My family and I have taken multiple rides at this farm, and every time it's been pleasant. It's nice because the horses don't follow each other in a mindless line, there is a measure of freedom to explore while on the horse. They have 600 acres to roam and many different horses to ride. We enjoyed looking at the other animals they have on the farm, small pigs, alpacas, a camel and even a zebra! I think for the money it's an amazing value and my nieces and Nephew beg to go back all the time. You won't regret it. Just a couple things I've noticed, don't schedule your day tightly. The ride is about an hour and a half but they also select the right horse for you and get everyone seated and adjusted in the arena which takes more time. So I never "squeeze" a ride in between other events. I budget an afternoon to enjoy. For payment I recommend bringing cash or they accept PayPal. read more

Such a fun experience at Spring Valley Farm. I took another trail ride at this great place and every time I ride, it's wonderful. Matt has been my guide and he's fabulous. He's always keeps a watchful eye on his group, offers tips to make us better riders, shares stories, & shares his passion for the animals. Julie rode w us as well and was just a charming individual. The horses are so well trained and you will be matched according to ability. Never a boring ride. I rode a stunning Quarter horse/ Clydesdale mix named Clover. She was a perfect ride for me. I went with me and my girlfriend and booked a private riding session. She told me how awesome it is and i can say today i totally agree! Having never rode a horse i was welcomed with opened arms and Alex and Megan walked me through what to do prior to beginning the journey . It was fun trek over the property seeing the livestock and then proceeding into the wooded area, they have such nice scenery and we encountered some deer! Charlie the horse was very calm with me being unexperienced. They also have a petting area with camels, a zebra/donkey. I had a blast and will definitely come back. I have personally been on multiple trail rides, different horses, and different guides... the guides are very knowledgeable and attentive. There are horses for all experience levels and very sweet and well loved horses. The farrier, the vet and chiropractor make regular monthly visits to all working horses and other animals and horses on the farm! These animals are well cared for and loved. The owners of the farm care deeply and passionately for their farm, all the animals, employees and visitors. There are passionate about their faith and it is wonderful that they allow others to come in and enjoy a piece of what they created and love every single day! read more

Spring valley offers a professional and incredibly fun experience. They are honest sellers and put so much care and effort into every animal and service they offer. Each lesson is taught with professionalism and a horse carefully picked for the persons riding experience. Their trail horses are well trained and take the best care of their riders no matter how inexperienced they may be. Not to mention the fun stock of animals to see while visiting. I could say so many wonderful things about this farm .. and the wonderful people that work hard to keep it going! At spring Valley were all family! What a great place to bring your family and kids to see all the variety of animals and get the real farm experience from wagon rides to petting a camel you name it Spring Valley has it ! This farm is by far the most amazing farm EVER! They love every animal with every ounce of soul they have. They do everything they do for the passion, not just for a pay check. All the people (both boarders and employees) are like one big family. Great place to bring your kids or come to get back into the equine world. If you are looking for a fun ride with an amazing view, Spring Valley is the place to come out! There are very affordable trail ride prices and leasing options. They have horses and ponies to suit everyone from beginner scaredy cat to advanced! It's a great place to come out and bring your church youth groups, clubs, and school groups for an adventure. The staff members are extremely knowledgeable on rider safety and will help you to be put at ease if you have never ridden before. read more

SVF is amazing!!! We came out to visit bc our daughter is always there! She boards her horse there and is a trail guide at times, and I was impressed with how super friendly the staff are! It was clean !! They have other animals too! A camel, pigs and a zorse!! How cool is that? My daughter spends all of her free time at this place and is so in love with it! This is a great family run farm with all sorts of activities for a couple, family, or just yourself! There are exotic animals you can actually pet. There are horses, cows, llamas, alpacas, mini horses, pigs, zorses, a camel, and even a zebra!! I never thought I'd be able to pet a zebra and a camel! They offer trailrides, lessons, pony rides, a petting zoo, carriage rides, and whatever else you might request. I love it there and can't wait to go back! read more

we had the best time staying at the cabin. we went fishing in the lake. the dogs played in the creek. it was so peaceful and relaxing. we made s'mores and just enjoyed the quiet and nature. we took a carriage ride around the property and saw all the animals at the farm the cabin was clean comfy and cozy. stocked with everything we needed. the staff was so friendly and accommodating. we will definitely be back. read more

I known and been going to this farm for years now, Michelle and Chad are like family. I love the atmosphere at the farm and how everyone is always greeting you with a happy face! They are not the run of the mill trail program and actually make it fun, their horses are all fat and happy. They take on some of the most difficult rescues and training projects and don't give up on them. All around wonderful people!! read more

WOW! We had a blast on our one hour trail ride at Spring Valley Farm! Our guides Matt, Sarah and Mo were so fun and helpful! such personable people! Our horses were beautiful and so gentle with our entire group! This was my second time riding Gracie and I just love her! Highly recommend visiting this farm! Great 1 hour and 2 hour trail ride at the Blue Ridge Mountains! With amazing trail guides and amazing horses. My daughter leases a horse named Ranger and it's a great barn and barn family I really recommend Spring Valley Farm for the young and old even if you just come take a lesson or go to the petting zoo! By far the best barn out there! Spring valley farm works with your budget and your riding skill to match you with the best horse! They also have one of the most unique trail riding programs out there! I couldn't find a more friendly and affordable place to keep my horse!
