Stevens & Grass Funeral Home

Stevens & Grass Funeral Home

(1 review)

Stevens & Grass Funeral Home has been our family's choice of funeral homes for nearly 50 years, as…read morewe've always received excellent service during our grieving. However, sadly this last funeral was totally different experience, from the beginning nothing seemed right or made sense. Our loved one passed after business hours, we arrived at 9:00 a.m., the following morning to make arrangements. Immediately we noticed that the previous owners always greeted you at the door, new management yells over a balcony. By the time we arrived, the employees already knew the amount on a life insurance policy. Later, that evening we received a telephone call stating the body could not be viewed per arrangements made earlier that morning, as the body had been dead nearly five days and the embalming process could not be done. WRONG!!! So we returned the next morning to make alternate arrangements (again with an employee calling over the balcony). This time the employee went over a questionnaire page asking if we wanted clothing or any personal items returned (why wasn't this done the day before?) In unison, we both stated only personal items and no interest in clothing being returned. At that time, we were informed by the employee that no personal items were on the body at the time of arrival and further that our loved one arrived with only pants and a belt. We both immediately looked at each other stunned and found this to be strange and then asked to view the body to ensure proper ID. We were denied seeing the body. Our loved one always had something in their pockets, keys, coins, a bolt, etc., as this was a known trait of this family member, they never had empty pockets, always carrying gum or cough drop because of coughing. The immediate family members (12) the previous evening witnessed our loved one was fully clothed with white socks, black house-shoes, navy tee shirt and beige slacks with a black belt, not what the funeral home alleged saying "arriving with belt & pants only." While waiting on Stevens & Grass to arrive at the home, the family spoke about how our loved one still had coloring, and the corner of the lip was just beginning to turn blue when Stevens & Grass arrived to remove the body, nor was the body stiff, it went limp when the employees removed it from the chair and they (S & G) commented on how limp the body was. I state this because this would not be a body dead for close to five days, as several friends, a neighbor and family members had spoken to and saw this loved one earlier. In addition our loved one kept a daily dairy which included an entry on the day of death. Our family physician viewed a photo taken before the body was removed and remarked the body had only been dead about an hour or a couple at the most and also mentioned still had coloring. Our question is we knew the clothing and now the body was in possession of Stevens & Grass, shouldn't they have known what he was wearing? We thought so and thought these questions to be bizarre. This is written a year after the fact, to alleviate any negative reviews that could be made suddenly following a death. At this time we still wonder if our family has the correct ashes (as we were informed a viewing would not be possible) since the clothing & time frame of death differ from what the funeral home says. I suppose we never have full closure. We regretfully write this review, as all family members for years has received nothing but exceptional experiences with this funeral home.
