You won't find better and more authentic Kung Fu place than Illinois Shaolin Kung Fu, for both,…read morekids and adults Kung Fu training. I've been training there for a year and a half together with my teenage son, and we both love it. We love authenticity of the place, love Master Chen and Sean and their style of teaching, love learning Forms and working with different weapons /staff, sword, broad sword, nunchucks, spear, even bull whip - we both love working with all of these, and I am a female/. To train with real Shaolin Master, captain of Shaolin Temple Performance Team side to side and to watch him going over the movements is unforgettable experience. Don't get me wrong, it's a hard work /that what kung fu means, hard work/, the warm up is like a bootcamp , cool down is another one , but you will definitely get in shape you've never been in and maybe loose few pounds. I also love flexible schedule, they have classes for every level almost every day, weekends too, you even have 2 options. I love parents train together with kids, we practice together with my son at home and test together, we have fun together. I also take Tai Chi class there and I highly recommend trying this one too. I can't speak of this place and quality of Master Chen's training highly enough. Thank you Illinois Shaolin Kung Fu Academy for this opportunity!

Although Kung Fu did helped me to learn some self defense, but it's mostly motion movements. I would recommend who is really into martial arts but I'm personally into more self defense techniques which wasn't shown up in Kung Fu.

This is going to be a little long, hopefully you'll find the background relevant…read more I've been disabled for 20 years. Severe chronic back pain from a car crash. I've gone through the pain management program at MarionJoy three times to no avail. Some of their docs really tried to help, others not so much. I've been to most if not all of the major pain specialists in the Chicago area, as well as several out of state, including Mayo Clinic. Tried every non-invasive procedure I could find (I wasn't a candidate for most surgical options): acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractic, various shots, etc. On a good day (once every month or two) I could go grocery shopping, but would be exhausted afterwards. Needed a cane for the past decade if I was going to walk more than 15-30 minutes. Walked like an 80-year-old most of the time. Everything took effort. Then I started at UMA for Qigong with Grand Master McGee. I've still got a ways to go, but have made vast improvements. I can go shopping most any time now, errands aren't usually a big deal, and I can usually cook once a day. Able to be more social, can sit and talk with company without too much discomfort, where it used to be completely exhausting. Haven't used the cane since. In short, I'm feeling human again. Grand Master McGee as well as the other students are a big part of that. Self-defence hasn't been a priority for me, but I'm learning quite a bit in addition to getting me healthy. I'm able to do most of what the rest of the class does, which I honestly didn't think I'd ever be capable of. Grand Master McGee really knows his craft.

It has helped me lose weight and gained self confidence not just in martial arts but also in my day to day life.

One I like to know if first impressions are accurate, and two there were some staff changes that turned out to be great changes! We love this school. We found this place because my daughters friend had a birthday party here. She loved it right away. My husband and I were not as sure that it would be a good fit for her because she takes after me and has horrible coordination. We were amazed at not only how patient all of the instructors were and still are with her but how much her coordination has not stopped her from trying to succeed at all the steps being taught. I believe that is only because the instructors never criticize, they are alway up beat and positive. The instructors are all awesome and really try to help all the kids learn how to do each move correctly but still make it a fun atmosphere. I love that there is an area that parents can sit and watch the class not all s schools offer this. I enjoy seeing what is being taught and how she is progressing. This waiting area sometimes is a little crowded, but for the most point everyone is nice and quiet so the class is not distracted. If the kids in class do get distracted the instructors quickly get their attention back where it should be without missing a beat. We are thrilled to be able to bring our daughter here and hope to continue for years to come.
