Spinning Wheel is a truly extraordinary place to stay - my extended family was looking for a place where we could vacation together during Covid times, and the multiple cottages at Spinning Wheel fit the bill perfectly. The pictures don't do it justice - the amount of time and energy the owners have poured into the ranch is truly astounding. We stayed in the Hetch Hetchy house, and it was wonderful. Great furnishings, beautiful deck overlooking the Tuolumne River, well appointed kitchen with everything we needed. We will definitely be returning, and highly recommend Spinning Wheel to anyone looking for a truly relaxing get away that's close to Yosemite. read more

Sorry to have to post this since the owners are really nice but people need to know what they are getting into. The place is really charming and does have a great vibe. However, the long dirt road is really bumpy and difficult to navigate daily - there is no paved road. This property is farther from the park than advertised - definitely plan on at least an hour's drive before you get to Yosemite Village. The biggest problem is the insects - there is no pest control and you will discover lots of spiders, ants and slugs. We're not talking about a bug here and there but lots of them that kept us up at night. We literally woke up with spider bites and had to check out early since the Cottage really needs full fumigation to get rid of all of the bug infestations. Also, if you are renting the Cottage the bathroom is in a separate building so you basically have to go outside to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Again, this place is quite beautiful and charming but it is definitely not a resort. read more

this place was very cool but we were there in a part of summer where it was over 100°. The AC in the room was popping the electrical repeatedly. The trick was to put the AC onto high so that it wasn't revving up and down constantly, which helped a bit. read more

What can I say, but this place is AMAZING!! We came up here for a few days to relax, enjoy the quiet sounds of nature, and to take in the beautiful surroundings.. man, did this place deliver !!! The cottage is a very beautiful set up. So simple, it has all you need right at your fingertips! The detached bathroom is big and amazing with a large shower to enjoy .. the surrounding are set up with an amazing peacefulness park like setting. The birds and bees, just hanging around in the crisp clean air. Two of the most well behaved, four legged fur babies running around, keeping us safe ..our neighbors were all wonderful, very polite & respectful. This is a very calm and relaxing retreat. Was so perfect! Sadly the homes burnt down in December but they rebuilt and did a wonderful job. We had 11 people and stayed Chaw'se House, the blue one. Four bedrooms and plenty of room for more than 11. Brand new so all the amenities were more than we would expect in a rental in the middle of "no where". Patrick and Heather were very hospitable and took great care of us. We took advantage of the pool but the kids preferred the river behind the house. They played with rocks, which is a nice change from playing with laptops. I would recommend stocking up on food on your way in at Raley's market about 30-40 min outside of town. The fridge has filtered water and that was a nice benefit for stocking up before hiking for the day. Pros: Beautiful house Plenty of room Comfortable beds with lots of bedding and pillows Provides bath towels, washer, dryer, all kitchen the necessities, and tons of DVDs and player. Beautiful deck with outdoor seating Fire pit with smores run by Patrick (manager) Pool and hot tub About 45 min to Yosemite Valley Wifi if needed at main campground area (walking distance from our house) Patrick and Heather are super nice and hospitable Cons: No cell or wifi in the house - we actually thought this was a plus, but others might find annoying Little field mice and bugs will find way in if your don't keep doors shut. We did not have an issue bc the field mouse visited and left quickly No restaurant or store close by, so prepare accordingly for food We highly recommend and only regret we did not stay longer! read more

The Spinning Wheel is such a special place that it's hard to fully describe. The artistic and personal details throughout the retreat - from the wooden carvings to the hand-picked stones to the Buddhist influences - add spiritual touch that fully complements a return to nature. We stayed in the Sun House and Crescent Cottage this time, but rented here before in 2012 before the devastating Rim Fire. Matt and Britney have done such an amazing restoring the property, including several new family rentals. They are also the perfect hosts! This is perfect for an extended family vacation (all together, yet apart in multiple cottages) or a quick getaway from the stresses of daily life. It's the gateway to Yosemite, so the perfect place to explore the valley and hike Half Dome, but also can be enjoyed without even setting foot into the park. Numerous rivers, such as the Middle Fork of the Toulemne River, and waterfalls are nearby for fishing, swimming and exploring. They also have an extensive reading and video collection. Rates that were displayed were misleading. Very poor communication via email. When I called, I spoke to one of the "CareTakers". He was very rude and laughed at me. Not the type of place that I would entrust my precious family vacation time to. I ask to speak with the owners themselves and he laughed again and said this conversation is over and hung up. The Sun House was a wonderful place for our Spring trip to Yosemite. Spacious & comfortable, we had everything we needed for cooking (including a grill with charcoal, and a chimney), a very comfortable bed and a luxury bath/shower. My husband and I relaxed on the patio each morning and evening, watching birds and enjoying the beautiful grounds, as well as the pool and hot tub. Location is within 15 minutes of Yosemite Big Oak Flat entrance gate, close to Hetch Hetchy, and in the Stanislaus National Forest, so we could get an early start to hiking and beat the crowds. The road leading to Spinning Wheel can be a bit challenging this year, due to a recent flood and washouts, so go slowly and be careful not to veer off the drive. Our hosts, the owners Britney and Matthew, greeted us upon arrival, made sure we were familiar with the home and property, and during a brief power outage due to an evening thunderstorm, checked in to make sure the generator restored our electricity. It was fun to explore the property and walk across the bridge, and I'd love to return in the summer to swim in the river! Thousands of stars in the sky away from city lights made this the perfect vacation spot! read more

We rented the Sun House, which was excellent for a couple. Directly in front of the pool/hot tub area. At night, the star-gazing was incredible from this spot. Decor was even more gorgeous in person than in pictures. The bed (a true King) was one of the most comfortable beds I have ever been in! In fact, we ordered the same pillows as soon as we got home. I am VERY picky about beds, and this one passed the test. Excellent high-count linens also. As noted, there is no/highly limited Wifi or cell phone service. However, this fact was clearly communicated to us prior to our arriving, and we were prepared with "books." If you don't bring books of your own, there are MANY in the Sun House. There is very little Wifi/cell phone service throughout all of Yosemite Valley. The Rim Fire has left this area denuded of trees. That's no one's fault; you will see that there are many burned trees in Yosemite also. However, due to careful watering, the grounds of Spinning Wheel are green with numerous beautiful flower beds. Hummingbirds were frequent visitors, as were Acorn Woodpeckers and Red-Tailed Hawks. The only reason that I am not giving this 5 stars is because the air conditioning (a portable wheeled unit) is simply not up to the task. With daytime temps pushing over 90 degrees, the unit struggled to keep the cottage at/near 83 degrees. A ductless unit on the wall would probably work better. BE AWARE, the road in is ROUGH. One mile of a dirt road, complete with ruts and washouts, necessitates renting a Jeep or similar. read more

If you have young kids this place is a must! We stayed in the River House and my family loved it. Perfect swimming hole in the back and a pool as well. Basketball court and plenty of room to roam around and enjoy nature. Owners are so friendly and make you feel at home. We have friends staying down the road at the Rush Creek lodge which was lovely but this place is special. Different in all the right ways! read more

I found this place via the website Vacation Rentals by Owner. We wanted to spend some nice quiet time in the Sierras near Yosemite. All the arrangements were made online and/or via email. The website was easy to navigate and making reservations was easy. We rented the Sun House which has a great deck and the pool/spa right outside the front. It also included a full kitchen and bath with shower only. Perfect for two people but there is a second room that has a day bed. No phones, no cable or satellite. But you get quiet, birds chirping, stars galore at night and a great area to walk and play at the riverside. It's also close to Yosemite and Hetch Hetchy. The owners were very nice and available but not intrusive so you could really enjoy the quiet. There were two other cabins being used and while there were guests there, you wouldn't know it. Yes, the Rim Fire did its destruction in the area but there is some rebuilding by man as well as nature and if you want to , just drive a few minutes and you can be near a lake or stream or river where you'd never know a fire came near. read more

We stayed here in late August 2015 on a trip to Yosemite. We really loved the property. We stayed in the Hetch Hetchy house which is newly built, and perfectly laid out and filled with everything you could need, in great condition. My favorite part was the expansive deck out the back that overlooked a creek and trees. Really felt like we were away from it all. It is definitely a quiet, get away from it all place. No cell reception and nothing nearby (supplies and restaurants in Groveland, about 20 mins away). About 40 mins to Hetch Hetchy in Yosemite and 1 hour to Yosemite Valley. Though you are not in the park, it feels like it. Oh yes, and a great peaceful pool to cool off in the afternoons. Highly recommended! read more
