We had just arrived that afternoon and were walking around our hotel to look for an early dinner. The dining room is lovely but not too stuffy or formal. We ordered the brown bread for starters, along with some wine and beer. I ordered the Arctic char (parsnip, chili, hazelnuts, browned butter and a soy glaze) and Paul G. went with the meatballs (hand-rolled and with cream sauce, mashed potatoes, lingonberries and pickled cucumber). We had the traditional Swedish meatball dish a few more times during the trip and they all came with the same components, but Bistro Bestick's was my fave. The sauce was heavier, velvety and creamy, and the potatoes were oh so fluffy. The berries were tart and fresh. I loved my fish, too... the hazelnuts, brown butter and soy were such a bright, unexpected combination. I enjoyed every bite. Don't sleep on dessert here! I couldn't even finish my dinner but still wanted to try the chocolate rum cake (salty caramel sauce, roasted peanuts, vanilla ice cream and crispy sesame) and what a delightful flavor explosion! It was beautifully presented and the sesame "cracker" on top was the perfect contrast to all the sweetness. I'd highly recommend BB!

It's pretty much a one person show from what I could see. The owner attended to me efficiently and without the slightest hesitation. I'm sorry to say that I don't speak Swedish (I wish I did I can tell you) but he was able to communicate with me and for that I will always be grateful. My plate had, if I recall correctly, four breaded and fried herring fillets. It had a coleslaw (which I found a surprising addition, creamy mashed potatoes, pickled cucumbers, red onions, and a little wedge of crispbread. I loved every bite. It was a generous plate. I particularly enjoyed eating a combination of the potatoes, cuke, onion, and fish on a corner of the crispbread as I munched away. There are a few nearby picnic type tables. So there was a place I could sit and enjoy this meal overlooking the water and a corner of the old town. If you find yourself in Stockholm, do yourself a favor and go to here. Even if you think you don't like herring, try it this way. I bet you'd be surprised.

Apparently I'm not the only one - since last I visited it is now placed on Michelin's Bib Gourmand list for Stockhom, and rightfully so. Upon entry you'll already feel a lovely blend of Swedish design and quirky aesthetic choices that signal you're in for a good experience. While the interior is tasteful, there are elements like chairs being mounted on the walls and a couple of the seatings being perched up on mounts near the front windows. Everyone who greets you and serves are very delightful, charming, and often funny, which really sets the tone wonderfully. The food itself is on the heartier side but all really well considered and delicious. We had the see bass ceviche with tomatoes (fresh, tangy, and complex) and iberico ham with parmesan (basic but very high quality ingredients), both of which were really delicious. The complimentary bread rolls and butter were really delightful, cooked with a bubbly crunchy texture that was delightful to chew. The main courses included their classic pork confit dish as well as another ibercio pork entree with white beans, cilantro, and chorizo - both were savory and very meat-forward but the star of the show was absolutely those white beans which were prepared in a very savoury sauce. Our total bill including a very good bottle of pinot noir from Napa Valley the bill came to around $240 USD. For the quality of the food, service, and attention to style, as well as the distinction of being a recognized place to eat in Stockholm, I would definitely recommend this place to any traveler who wants to experience local cusine in Stockholm.

The view of the kitchen was fantastic seeing the cooks taste their food before service. Meal started off with complimentary bread which was excellent. The bread was crispy on the outside and super soft on the inside. The butter was ok. Moved on to the complimentary cream of broccoli soup which was flavorful and a great way to start off lunch. Opted for the Ox Cheeks for lunch and it was excellent. This was served with a side of super fragrant truffled mashed potatoes along with super tender and flavorful ox cheeks. The sauce was excellent. Service by the waitstaff was excellent.

I had a bowl of the fish stew, which came with a side of cream that was like sour cream. I watched some other gentlemen take a spoonful and put it in their soup and eat it. That fish stew was hearty and delicious. They also serve organic beers here and I had a Stockholm Organic Lager, which tasted like a German Pilsner. It's not a huge place, and when we got there, the tables at ground level were full. They have outside seating, but seeing how this was early January, we didn't want to eat outside, even though it is covered (but still a bit open). They have these "stadium-style" seats with little tables, though, and we climbed up there. They have everything partially made, and when you order, they put it together. There were only two people I could see handling it, but service was great. Some of the best food I ate all trip.

The building is stunning - sweet and beautiful - originally built for the Stockholm Art and Industrial Exhibition in 1897. Later, it was a bakery and then a restaurant, until 1992, when restaurateur, cookbook author and food columnist Nils Emil Ahlin took over the inn and created the Ulla Winbladh we know today. The food is classically Swedish and completely delicious. We started our meal by sharing Toast Skagen (pieces of toasted bread and a prawn salad called skagenröra, typically made with mayonnaise, sour cream and dill, sometimes dijon mustard, and garnished with roe), which is incredibly popular in the warmer months in Nordic countries. (They split the portion onto two plates for us!) My husband ordered another classic - poached cod served with shrimp, chopped hard boiled eggs, freshly grated horseradish, browned butter, and potatoes. I had my first (but not last) herring of the trip - fried herring with mashed potatoes, lingonberries, and lightly pickled cucumber. We had a wine and beer and really enjoyed our leisurely lunch at this beautiful restaurant on the island of Djurgården. A very beautiful and delicious meal.
