So back to Uptown. It used to be run by an older French guy who gave lousy haircuts, but it was close and cheap. Then it was bought up by some younger folks who are pretty friendly. Like I said, the haircuts are ok (I've walked out a couple of times saying to myself "it's ok it'll grow out in a week or two"). Consistency seems to be an issue here. I've had great cuts from them and not so great cuts. Another issue here is the wait time. It always seems to be packed, which is no fault of their own, but more often than not I've walked away, not wanting to waste time on my weekend waiting for a trim.

So today was my second time going to this place, I've recently just switched to another barber. My…read morefirst time being there was 5/5 the owner was polite and nice and everyone was smiling, my first haircut there was awesome, a solid 5/5, I forgot his name but I think it might've been the owners son. Today was my second haircut there and I've got a shitty vibe right when I walked through the door, no one greeted me, the owner was looking at me strange, and the mood just felt off like I knew I was going to get a shitty haircut today type of vibe. I sat down on the chair and today my barber was a women, she has blonde hair, Asian. I usually prefer males to cut my hair but I'm not picky, I just think males just have more experience and more knowledge about male hair. So yeah, I sat down and she asks me, " What style would you like today?" I told her I wanted, a high top fade the top being round, I also showed her some photos so she can get a better image as what I was talking about, I told her specifically to keep the side straight and going up wards, she says ok and starts cutting. She had a bit of an attitude, it felt like she didn't want t be there. Already off to a bad start she started to cut the side, I knew it was going to be bad when she started to bring my side inwards kinda giving me a Mohawk kinda side look- which was not what I asked for. I asked for my side to go straight up and having my top round over to each side. She then proceeded, I wanted to say something but I knew I couldn't because she already fucked it up. At the end I ended up having a Mohawk with a flat top. I'm really mad and upset because the reason I wanted to switch barbers is so I won't get my hair messed up again, and now I'm getting flash backs... I ended up paying anyways I gave the owner 22 bucks, I was generous to tip her 1$ dollar even though she fucked up my hair, and he owner just gave my that disgust face right when I gave him the tip, like he expected me to tip big, why would I tip big for a shitty haircut?. I hope the next time I come back the guy is there, and if I get my haircut fucked again I'll probably just gotta switch again to another barber.

I recently had a great experience at this little barbershop after moving into the neighbourhood. I…read morecame in on a Saturday afternoon, and it was busy. I was expecting a wait, but they were well-staffed, and I was invited to a chair before I even had a chance to grab one in the waiting area. I may have been lucky, as I got Ray, the older gentleman that runs the place as my barber. He's probably getting on to about 70, but has been cutting hair since he was 17(!!!!). His experience shows: I got more or less everything I look for in a haircut: friendly, but not vapid or intrusive conversation; attention to detail, including going over everything at the end and catching a few stray hairs; an unpretentious attitude; and a reasonable price. After having a mixed bag of experiences all over Vancouver (since when is $35-40 the standard price for a men's cut? It takes 1/2 an hour!), I was very glad to find this, especially a few blocks away from my place. Other notes: - Don't expect fancy salon finishings/decor: this place hasn't been updated since it was first set up in the 50's or 60's (valley girl voice: omg, so last-century, right!?) - I have thick, wavy, omni-directional hair that often grows out weird 2 weeks after what looks like a good cut, and this one stood the test of time - My cut is relatively straight forward: perhaps temper your expectations if your hoping for something avant-garde or future-retro-crazy (actually, maybe if you asked Ray to "do what he used to do in 1965" you'd get exactly what you wanted?)

They always go the extra mile to make sure that customers are happy, from offering a drink when you come in, to the hot towel after your cut. I usually go for a standard mens cut and a beard trim, but Max is also great with the straightrazor. 100% worth the short walk from downtown, not to mention that Coal Harbor is beautiful is anyways.

The cut was fine, but he had zero personality and honestly seemed hungover. Third time I got one of the managers, Colin. The haircut was bad and I found him super pretentious. He also kept touching my arm in way that felt intrusive. After that, I had zero plans to go back. I walked past today, didn't recognize any of the barbers working, and figured I'd give it one last shot. I got Matt and he was great. Friendly, funny, and gave me exactly what I wanted. I mentioned my previous experiences and he told me neither of those barbers work there anymore, so I don't need to be nervous about coming back After reading some of the other reviews, I think a lot of them are mainly about the same people I had issues with in the past. It's difficult to ever get cut with the same person (if you find a good barber) because they rotate different barbers through from time to time. Finally found one that I liked, but he moved to a different location (Cambie). But I won't be back after today's debacle: Got a pretty terrible haircut (the barber cut my sideburn in half on one side, shaving off most of my natural hairline and leaving me with a strip of a sideburn), and even left portions of uncut hair behind my ears. I asked to have the owner try to fix the mistakes, but when I went back, the owner (who was really friendly) didn't acknowledge that the haircut was a problem, and only did a few quick buzzes before announcing "there!"
