Classic dark, hole-in-the-wall gay bar. Loved it. (Hot, friendly bartenders, too!) it was a high point on my trip to Amsterdam.

Located minutes from Vondelpark, in Leidseplein, this is probably the most famous Gay clubs in…read moreAmsterdam, and can be quite intimidating to even the most seasoned event attendees. The front entrance is not very welcoming and if you're not there at the right time the doors may be locked. There may be daily events which you can view on their website. On some days there are two separate events so it may be closed while they switch over and clean for the second event. When you enter, walk through the two doors and greet the nice people at the window. Pay your entrance fee with pin, cash or debit and they will give you a tag and direct you to the coat check. They will give you a hanger and a number you need to stick in your sock or somewhere (very old school). Then you go to a little room (they can see you changing from the main room) and remove your clothing or change into whatever, put your street clothes on the hangar or into the backpack or bag (which I certainly hope you brought) and return it to them. After this, you are free to do what you want. On the main level there is the bar and stage. You can dance or socialize. There are steps upstairs or downstairs. Downstairs there are several dark rooms and showers, bathrooms and sinks. The darkrooms are so dark I can't describe what's in there. You need to see for yourself. There are separate cabins where you can lock the doors and there are slings in some of them. The other rooms I could not see. Upstairs is a nice view of the bar and the main stage. Off to the left are two slings and a big mattress area, a few smaller rooms with GHs. There is something for everyone here but if you just want to hang out and chat with friends, that works too, but mostly on the main level. Things to note: There are no towels for the showers. They provide condoms and I'm not sure if it's lube or hand sanitizer - so think about that. They have many friendly staff or volunteers standing and walking around willing to help or answer questions. They also pick up empty glasses or bottles which is important. My advice is to not stress and just go in and have fun. You can always leave if you want to. Everyone is very nice and feeling the same way as you are. Don't let this chance pass you by if you're visiting Amsterdam and the Leidseplein area. Gay, straight, bi are welcome. No judgement or rules. You'll thank me later.

You'll want to bring a backpack or tote bag to keep you phone and clothes in at coat check. Also, the bars do tap to pay on Apple Watch, otherwise you'll have to get creative on where to put your credit card. After the second round of drinks my credit card company blocked my card as a fraud alert (despite having a travel notification), guess they thought it was late for me to be at "Church" :-) Bartender was fine with waiting as hubby went back to coat check to grab a physical card. The entire staff throughout is very friendly and the place is clean. Lots of various activities going on in each corner or room. Water based lube is in the hand sanitizer pumps next to the other supplies. Be careful going down the steps into the restroom as the steps are not very wide and hold on to that handrail! The night we went was the underwear party. DJ was great and so were the drinks. A lot of different guys were here with different body types and very welcoming. Have fun and let go!

Definitely a fun mix of atmosphere, with an interesting mix of people. During my stay in Amsterdam I went here twice. The first was a busy Friday night, the second time was a quiet Monday night and it was neat seeing how the space was used differently on the different nights. The only downside to this place was on the slower night, when the bartender didn't speak English, and I got some interesting drinks made (but a part of that was also just being unfamiliar with European tender customs - like what mixers are available, what mixers need to be paid for, etc).

As the night gets later the crowd pics up! It becomes very crowded on the second floor but that is the fun spot for people watching! The crowd is a pretty good mix - older and younger. They do not take American credit cards so have plenty of Euro.
