I ordered a kind of stew with lamb and spinach. The flavor was superb but the lamb could have simmered a bit longer. The flavor was enhanced by the meat being cooked on the bone and some of the bones were split which enabled the marrow to enrich the flavor even more. The portion was more than ample and I shall enjoy another meal as a result. I will simmer the meat longer to complete tenderizing it. I first encountered Afghan cuisine some 20 years ago when I was privileged to work with resettling Afghani people in St Louis, MO. I have eaten at many Afghan restaurants since then and have enjoyed the food very much. However, of all the restaurants and homes that I've eaten in, I have found that I do not enjoy the sauces offers here. There is no true "white" sauce that I've eaten elsewhere and all of the sauces are watery instead of thick. Perhaps it is a regional preference. Also, I wish they would consider adding a half naan/half rice option to the place instead of rice OR naan. The rice, by the way is absolutely DELICIOUS I also enjoy the complimentary green or milk tea but would appreciate a cooler of water to be dispensed in the same area. I enjoy both the food ambience in this casual spot. I will continue to return, as I work my way through their menu. read more

Lots of good restaurants nearby, try those instead. Urban Grill and Salad, Yummy Kabob, Priya Indian Cuisine. Visited this restaurant for lunch today. Placed an order for a dish at the counter and sat down. As one of the ladies brought the food to my table, I asked for a glass of water and she pointed to their refrigerator and told me I needed to get a bottle of water, which I did. After eating the plate, I went to the counter to order the dumplings and paid and as I was going to sit back down, the same lady asked me if I had paid for the bottle of water and then she gestured to me in a derogatory manner. I asked her why the restaurant did not have water for customers and she said that they did not and we are required to pay for bottles of water. I asked her why there was no tap water available and she stated that they did not offer tap water for customers. I expressed concern that water was not available for customers at which time a different lady that was seated at a table near the counter stated that they do have tap water but it tastes bad. I asked her why I was told I could not have tap water and this second lady stated that the prior lady meant to say they do (although she clearly refused to provide water to me). I then stated that I would be reporting my concerns to the Department that they refuse to provide water to customers and the second lady stated that I did not need to do that because they do offer water but they were not required to provide filtered water. I stated that I was clearly refused water; the initial lady stood there and did not respond. All this over a $1.50 up charge for water. read more

A Sad Goodbye to What Was Once Our Favorite Spot It breaks my heart to update our glowing 5-star review from February. Back then, Spice Kabob felt like a hidden gem--warm, welcoming, and full of soul. The food was incredible, and the atmosphere reminded my wife of her babunia. We were greeted like old friends, and every visit felt like being a guest in someone's home. We eat out 3-4 times a week, and this quickly became our go-to spot. We even planned to bring my wife's family here next month when they visit. But today's experience changed everything. We arrived to an empty restaurant, sat down, and placed our usual order. Our salads came quickly, which usually means the main dishes are on their way. Then we noticed a large stack of naan being placed on a nearby table. Moments later, every staff member sat down to eat lunch--while we and another customer who had placed a phone order were left waiting, completely unacknowledged. We've been to plenty of places where staff eat together, and we think that's great. But what we've never seen is the entire kitchen shut down while customers are actively waiting for food. No one checked on us. No one explained the delay. No one even looked our way. The other customer's wife and child waited in the car, clearly getting restless. Eventually, they came inside, saw the staff still eating, and looked just as confused as we were. After nearly 30 minutes, someone finally got up, put on gloves (without washing hands after eating with them), and started cooking. We had to ask for our food to go because we were out of time. and this is what we were told about the wait time being so long, "The Chicken Malai takes longer to cook, and we can't start the beef kabobs until the Malai is almost done." That wasn't the issue. The issue was that the kitchen stopped working for 20 minutes while customers waited. And when we got home, our chicken was still pink in the middle--clearly rushed and undercooked. We've ordered these dishes many times before. We know what they're supposed to look like. This experience poisoned what used to be a special place for us. Even if we came back, we'd always remember how unwelcome we felt. We're loyal to places we love. We get to know the staff, and we support them. That's what we were building with Spice Kabob. But today made it clear that something fundamental has changed. This didn't have to happen. There were so many ways this could've been handled better: Let us know before ordering that the kitchen was about to take a break. We could've decided to stay or come back later. At the very least, someone could've come to our table and explained the delay. A simple acknowledgment goes a long way. Bring out naan with our salads and apologize for the wait. That small gesture would've made us feel cared for--and the other customer could've shared it with his child. Don't have the entire staff stop working at once. Cook the pending orders first, then enjoy your meal together. That's basic hospitality. My wife said her family--who owned a restaurant--would never treat guests this way. For months, Spice Kabob felt like home. But now, that feeling is gone. I asked her if she was sure we were done with this place, and she said yes. Despite the food and atmosphere reminding her of growing up with family, the experience was ruined. Spice Kabob, thank you for the beautiful memories and for bringing literal tears of joy to my wife on our first visit. We truly hope you take this feedback to heart. Imagine if this had been our first impression--we never would've recommended you to friends and family, who also became fans because of that magical first visit. This is where we part ways. We're sad, disappointed, and deeply bummed out. But we hope you learn from this and find a way to bring back the warmth and care that made your restaurant so special. read more

Sad that this place is temporarily closed. They have the best kabobs in the area. It's a hole in the wall that doesn't have a good location but the food is worth the visit. Their food is so delicious and everything they serve is homemade, even all of their sauces are made in house. The kabobs are very juicy and so flavorful. I rarely get chicken kabobs at restaurants because they're not as flavorful and almost always dry. But even their chicken kabobs here are amazing and so tender. The service is great, everyone is friendly, and you get free unlimited hot tea when you dine in. Love coming here for their kabobs (beef, lamb, and chicken), can't wait for them to reopen. read more

Absolutely fantastic restaurant with large portions of freshly prepared food and the kindest wait staff. Highly recommend their chicken thigh and the Tikka Kabab plate with lamb! Not to mention the phenomenal, freshly baked naan. Everything is full of flavor and they have additional sauces and spices at the table. The only thing not made in-house is the baklava, but it's still very good! Don't be dismayed by the diner-like interior or the paper plates that are provided. What an absolutely delicious meal!!! I can't say enough about Spice Kabab. The food was extremely well proportioned and very savory. We had the Lamb and Chicken Biriyani plates along with the chicken wrap. OMG, super satisfying and it made me want more. My only issue is that I live 20 miles away. The restaurant is uber clean which included the restrooms. These owners are very conscientious about cleanliness which made us feel even more at home here. I've included pictures of our meals. My daughter chose this food joint based on its 4.8 star rating. We both loved the food and the service. It's a family run place and all of them are awesome and very proud of their culture and excited when people like me show up to try the Afghan national dish Kapuli Puloa. This dish was damn good! When I first come in, I have the habit to wipe all the tables and chairs with wet wipe(even though the table is clean by naked eyes), the waiter immediately bring out clorox wipe to wipe all the tables again for us. We came here on Sunday afternoon,the environment of the restuarant is not crowded and clean. We can slowly eat our food comfortably. The food is nice!, my daughter finished the Naan Beef itself and finished the cucumber side! The biriani is yummy too, but a bit spicy for my daughter, i love it's spiciness though. The lamb kebab is so tender and juict. There is some lamb smell so my faughter cannot stand the smell, but I love it though. I love the 50's diner decor, may have been there previously. The lentils were good, rice decent and the wraps are so massive. My son couldn't finish. A little too spicy for him. Came here to satisfy a craving for some fresh Mediterranean style food and was not disappointed. The kebabs are cooked over flames right outside and were perfectly succulent and flavorful. We came to Spice Kabob as a group of 7 and had an amazing dining experience from start to finish. We ordered various dishes, including lamb tika kabobs, Fish Kabobs, Chappli Kabobs, mantu, Bolani, and Daal (Lentil). We asked every order to come with garlic naan. Every single item was delicious, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. The lamb was tender and well-seasoned, the fish had a great char with a melt-in-your-mouth texture, and the chapli kabob had that perfect balance of spice and juiciness. I was excited to try Spice Kabab as I love Afghani food. The aroma of the spices and food being cooked as I walked in was a good sign. I was excited to try my Chicken Karachi and was disappointed to find that they'd given me goat when I returned home to eat my food. I explicitly said I wanted chicken FIVE times when I ordered and pointed to it in the menu repeatedly. If you like goat, you'd probably enjoy this dish but I don't and I most definitely didn't want to pick through fatty meat and bone. I tried, but couldn't eat this meal. The sauce itself was flavorful and good, I would've enjoyed it if the protein was correct. Had I not repeated my order multiple times I probably wouldn't be so upset at the mistake. Ordered mixed bolani, mind you I have had my fair share, but this one was our if this world, and portion size will feed me all week, chutney served with is amazing. Also ordered a side of garlic naan, beef keema naan and spice shami special. Everything was amazing, meat was tender, flavorful and well spiced. Owner was friendly introduced himself and his family, he shared his passion for sharing culture through food. Complimentary hot milk tea and tea made waiting for our made to order meal pleasant. I'm in from out of town and stopped in here the other day. This spot is tucked away in a strip center (oddly enough near a strip club) and walking in it feels almost like a diner. Outside is an open flame grill where the chef was preparing fresh kabobs. I ordered the beef tikka kabob with the dumplings. Holy cow! All of this was amazing. The meal came with a cucumber and tomato salad and cooked garbanzos. Their homemade red sauce and white sauce are just as amazing as everything else! Only opened 9 months, the restaurant' co-owner Haulette(? Sorry if I butchered your name!) shared his vision of infusing his heart into a meal for his customers. With that mindset the food is cooked freshly at time of order-- you can see yourself with their own kitchen. Their Naan is fresh made in the morning. The meat is so so so fresh. We had a party of four, so selected the Family Set ($99 as of Nov 2024) which was served with each person receiving a finely cubed cucumber/ tomato salad and chickpea (or garbanzo)-in-minty green sauce. They serve a huge heaping of long grain(basmati?) favored rice and beef tikka( cubeb meat), chicken Tikka, simba beef (i.e. ground), simba chicken. Their is complimentary milk tea (lovely!) where you sweeten yourself and decaf tea (which I did not try). Service was wonderful. As I said, it was great to hear the restaurant's philosophy on his food. They were helpful in explaining items in menu. Ww has so much leftovers, so had a few containers to go. The restaurant felt gave extra sauce and packed spices for us. As they helped us, the restaurant ppl explain they import and buy ingredients from Afghan market and grind themselves. They also make curry but we didnt have refrigeration all day to take some =( Coming from the Bay Area in a neighborhood with many Afghani restaurants/kebab, this place is EXCEPTIONAL. The owner plans to open a second Sice Kebab somewhere like Dublin and maybe all the way to Fremont. I plan to keep tabs. In meantime, i unfortunately don't live anywhere near here, but will bookmark this restaurestaurant. It is a quick side trip off Hwy 50 on way to south Lake Tahoe, after all. (FYI also nearby costco to gas up, so great excuse for ya skiers and boarders!) Deco is like a 60s diner without booths and aluminum on the lower backwards. read more
