Last September I was overweight, weak and unable to get up and down off the ground. Previous…read moreattempts at exercise were short-lived and left me feeling like a failure. I knew that I needed to do something because physically and mentally I was not doing anything. I started researching ways to exercise and I discovered Club Pilates. They offer a half hour introductory class and after taking it I thought, "I think I can do this." I signed up taking one class a week. I was encouraged by classmates and the fabulous instructors. Soon, once a week became twice a week. This past spring I decided to add a third class. Today I celebrated my 100th class. Last September, that number seemed impossible. I adjusted my thinking. I decided that progress is better than perfection. For the last 11 months I know that I've lost fat weight and gained muscle weight. Sometimes I have had to modify what I was doing from everyone else. The instructors Megan, Linnea, and Alaina have helped me on my journey. Their expertise and knowledge of the human body have helped me to understand my body better. Their encouragement and friendship has kept me on track. I can get up and down off the floor now. I can do so many things. Some of them are small things, but as I have done them I've stopped and savored those little wins. The friends I've made at Club Pilates have made getting to class easy. Knowing we can have a good laugh at ourselves and cheer one another on has been such a beautiful part of this experience. I never expected that. Finally, I can't thank my family enough for cheering me on while on this journey. Next up the 250 Club!

I'm home for the holidays and stopped by for a quick class on Christmas Eve (this morning). I got there a bit early because, in my experience, you'll need to spend a few minutes signing liability waivers and chatting. The coaches, Dino and Perry, were great! Friendly and made sure I was well informed about what was going on for day and where the equipment was. The prior class was finishing up, and they were willing to share their mini white boards for me to us! As I was getting ready, many people helped me find or share equipment as needed, and there was more than enough space for a class of 15-20. Perry led the class and watched everyone, offering advise and making sure everyone was maintained good form through a rough workout. Drop in prices were average for most CrossFit gyms: $20, or buy a $20 shirt/tank and the class is free! I will definitely be back if I'm in the area again!

Sure, you can go ape crazy with bikini contests and odes to body building. Or you can opt to get a real workout with really good people, great music, encouraging community and get something out of it in 45 minutes. There are other options on their menu, but the boot camps, ever-changing, reformatting and mixing it up, keep your body guessing. (and trust me, I'm not a fan of the term "boot camp" but for lack of a better term, I'll suck it up because the sweat is REAL). As with everything in life, you get out of it what you will put into it. Even if you DIDNT change your lifestyle, and did a handful of these puppies a month, you will see results. Strength? Muscle tone? Better balance? It sneaks up on you. If you add a nutrition regimen, of course transformation is possible. But I didn't come for transformation, I came because I needed to focus on some muscle building and the gym world has been like barfing pellets. The "gym culture" gets on my nerves after a while. Sure, will you find stereotypical "meatheads" at FA? Maybe. But when we all walk in and the instructor gets us going, we are all too focused to worry about baloney and work gets real. The most amazing thing about the structure are the instructors. Many of them are body builder/bikini champions! And yet they are not into the "look at mah booty babe" at all (like some dance instructors out there). NOPE. They are there to make sure your form is good, you are focused, encourage and guide you. Need to modify? Oh they will do that without shaming, au contraire! They will make modifications with attentive and super professional bedside manners. Everyone walks in happy! And walks out dead. Beat. Sweaty and with a feeling of accomplishment. High fives all around. Staff is happy. It's the happy torture chamber. I am really enjoying this, and I was so on the fence. Glad I found them!
