Spencer House isn't one of the more fascinating royal sites in the UK, but it's worth a stop. The mansion looks a lot more impressive from the vantage point of Green Park than it does from its entrance on St. James's Place, and it was much more substantial in 1800 without all the surrounding buildings detracting from its magnitude.
Spencer House is still owned by Princess Diana's brother, and only five such aristocratic houses remain in London, so there is significant history associated with this home that dates to the 1750s. Various royals still utilize the house, although much of the furniture are mere replicas.
Tip: If you don't know what you're looking for, the entrance sign is tiny and you'll walk right past the building (see my pictures). The house is right in the bend of the road in the corner of St. James's Place. What I found more interesting was the blue circular plaque just down the street that marks the home from which my favorite pianist Chopin departed for his final concert. read more
