Music Connection is a small town music store with quite a wide variety of equipment available in…read morestock (for such a small store). They cater to small town and beginner musician's needs with the products they carry in stock. Meaning they don't have many high-end products available. I don't fancy myself an expert musician, but I'm not a beginner either. I mainly play acoustic guitar and keyboard, and they don't have very impressive products for either. You definitely won't find a Taylor or a Martin in stock. They have some decent electric guitars and basses (if you're a Fender person), but as a whole, I describe it as they just cater to beginners. Their staff aren't the most friendly people in the world. They're not outright rude or anything, but they don't really go out of their way to make you feel at home in their store. I more so get the feeling that they can hardly wait for me to leave. They do have some band equipment there (trumpets, saxophones, clarinets, etc...) and a lot of accessories for them. My expertise goes out the window when it comes to that stuff, but I can say that my wife got her clarinet serviced there and gave them special instructions to do a few things, including replacing the pads, and they didn't. If I remember correctly, they didn't even clean it up very good. She was not impressed at all. For the most part, I stop in for emergency needs only. I can't afford to shop there otherwise. They're prices are reminiscent of convenience store markups! Example. I bought a set of GHS Boomers electric guitar strings from them yesterday that cost me a whopping $7.45! If I had the time to wait for shipping, I could have ordered them online for $3.89 and easily could have bought them for that lower price at a larger store. All that said, they're convenient when you need them, but you definitely pay for the convenience!

I returned to the Clay County Fair on it's last day (Sunday) of the 2014 event. I drove all the way…read moreup from Ames for the Day, instead of other Sunday alternatives (like the Tom Harkin's last steak fry in Indianola), and never looked back (except to check for the Iowa Highway Patrol). I paid $5 to park less than a half-block away, and then entered what is perhaps the best County Fair ever. I spent most of my time marveling at the huge displays of farm equipment (of various brands), barns full of farm animals, and various commercial exhibits. . I also got to visit with one of the Richter brothers of 3 Sons fame, enjoy some of the Art at the Barn, listen to some good music, watch some cool model trains and some chain saw art, and of course nosh down on a nutty bar. I left feeling happy, healthy and terrific, and i really hope that I can come back next year.

The people of NW Iowa claim this is the greatest county fair in the world. I have been to multiple…read morecounty fairs in Iowa and I will say it's the best one I've been to so far. The fair does a great job of providing lots of things to see and do. If you like animals they have everything from horses and cows to bunnies and goats. They have typical fair events like carnival rides, farm equipment, and an expo area. They also have fun different things like a baking contest, table setting contest, and a big railroad area. Like any fair most people go there for the food and this fair is no exception. Clay county fair is known for its Nutty Bar ice cream bars. It also has a boat load of food venders. I got the bacon tenderloin that had bacon ground up in the meat and it was great. All in all I can't recommend the fair enough. I still prefer the Iowa State Fair more but you truly can't go wrong with either. If you go to this fair I guarantee you will find a couple things you enjoy.
