After listening to Spence Diamond's countless advertisements on the radio (Sean Jones and Sarah are a fun duo!), my partner and I decided to check out Spence Diamonds to look for an engagement ring.
At first, the salesperson was super friendly and I immediately felt at ease because he encouraged us to roam and look around the showroom. The interior of the store was massive and impressive!
All of the engagement rings were out on display and I was able to try on as many as I wanted because they were imitations of the actual rings.
The salesperson was really patient with me in selecting the overall "look" of the ring, and soon after showed us into a smaller room to discuss the details of the ring. We were given a quick crash course on the 4C's of diamonds (carat weight, cut, colour, clarity), and up until this point, I was extremely pleased with the whole experience. However, things started to go very downhill. We were quickly asked what quality of diamond we wanted, and the salesperson brought out one "real" diamond (note: none of the rings we were dealing with prior to this point were "real"; they were prototypes). I felt extremely anxious because I was put on the spot to pick the diamond he brought out right away. When I responded with a mediocre response to the diamond, he stated this was a "very rare" diamond and tried to sell it to us without offering to show us other varieties. When I asked to see another type, his responded rather coldly and looked impatient. He seemed to want to sell one quickly. I felt uncomfortable requesting to see another diamond... His attitude toward us was as if we were bad customers because we weren't content with the first diamond he brought out. We asked about the paperwork of the diamonds, and instead of showing us the specifics, he became defensive and asked us what was wrong with the diamond and why we didn't like it. :(
However, we did request to see a few others, and after viewing a few other diamonds, because of the pressure to pick a diamond, I hesitantly chose one of the best ones out of the ones we were shown.
After I picked out a diamond, I was shown out of the smaller room, and my partner dealt with the salesperson to go over a few more of the specifics. I wasn't sure what they would be talking about.
Note: up until this point, I would have rated Spence Diamonds as 3-4 stars because, despite the pressure, the salesperson had been super patient at the initial onset of our visit.
However, as I waited outside in the showroom, I heard loud arguments, and thereafter saw the salesperson rush out of the smaller room looking very irate. Apparently, while I was out, the salesperson tried to pressure my partner to put a deposit in on the diamond on the spot. When my partner declined and tried to explain that this was our first visit to a jewelry store for engagement rings and that we wanted to go check out other stores, the salesperson used pressure sales tactics and told him something along the lines of, "This is the diamond your girlfriend has her heart set out for and wants. You need to get it for her", which is bogus, because I had never said that. When my partner kept on declining to put the deposit in, the salesperson rapidly got up from his seat and said something like, "Okay, well, that's it for me, then", and then left the room and left both of us to leave the store.
I'm usually very forgiving to salespeople because I know how difficult being in sales can be (e.g., trying to convince customers to buy into something because of commission, etc.), but... how rude of him to just dismiss my partner!
The way my partner was brushed off was disrespectful to his decision and unprofessional. I think it would have been much more professional for the salesperson to recognize our hesitance and to have given us more leeway to decide to come back after thinking about it. It's rather unfortunate, because we will not be going back there. We did not appreciate the condescending nature of the salesperson and the way we were made to feel bad for not making a purchase on that day. :( read more
