While driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, my girlfriend and I had to stop to get some gas. Not familiar…read morewith the area, we got off the parkway and started driving towards the closest small town looking for a gas station. That's when we came upon this place in rural North Carolina. We pulled up to the gas pumps which were straight out of the 1950s. No digital display, no credit card swipe, just those old fashion wheels displaying the price and number. It was clearly labeled as not accepting credit cards, so we ventured inside the little rundown structure. The place looked like it hadn't been updated in quite some time. The counter was on the left, featuring items such as beef jerky, gum, candy, and socks. There was also a menu on the wall featuring a variety of sandwiches. Against the right wall was a bunch of old used toys for sale, really selling the backwoods authenticity of the place. The lady behind the counter was in the middle of making some sandwiches for four older gentlemen sitting at a table watching a TV from the early 1990s (they immediately stopped talking when we entered). I gave the very friendly lady $20 for gas and went back outside. The pump as a lever on the side you need to push down to reset the old display. After a few minutes, the pump filled off my gas tank and stopped automatically at $19.98 (close enough). We were on our way back to the Blue Ridge Parkway. This place gets five stars because, honestly, it was pretty awesome. After driving for hundreds of miles on touristy roads and attractions, it was a nice break to see some rural North Carolina establishments.

There was only one other person inside and they were tending the store. We were able to talk with her for a while and learned some interesting historical information about the property. She was very friendly and welcoming and we enjoyed talking with her. The store was built in 1902 and operated by the Watson family for many years. It unfortunately was lost to time and had fallen into disrepair, but the little Parkway general store is finally now resurrected and reopened as a local gathering place/ provisional store! They opened February 23, 2025 and intend to be open year round. Located just steps away from the Blue Ridge Parkway. The general store was also the location for the post office for Beng (Benge), NC. from 1902 to 1952. The general store was the gathering place for the locals. The town however has been lost to history. They now serve coffee in addition to the essentials and some gift items they provide. The front part is a little sitting area with numbered coffee cups on the wall for the locals. In the rear of the store you can still see the post office area. We picked up a few items and wish them the best of luck. This was a really cool stop learning about some of the history.
