The building looks like a an Indian pueblo, not some run-of-the-mill convenience store! I suspect that the owners live above the place. It's one of the tallest gas stations I've ever been to. It's located along the main road into town, right next to the Jemez Pueblo Indian Reservation Welcome Center, by some red cliffs. The soil here is so red, it looks like rust or the surface of Mars. The restrooms are located outside, in a separate cinder block building. They were clean. They have local events here, like selling BBQ plates for a cause. It seems to be part of the community around here. Not only do they have gas here, but offer water and air for the tires. Just watch your speed through here.

I strike up a conversation with a couple of people who seem to know what's what and they tell me the best tamales can be had at the Lone Butte General Store... Now, I am not one to pooh pooh a great tamale - especially in New Mexico. However, when I pull into the Shell gas station, I seriously had my doubts. Here? Really? So, I go in to the mini mart and see all the usual suspects... cheetos, beer, smokes, etc... I had to ask if they had tamales to which the nice gent behind the counter pointed to the back. I had to look twice but next to the dried out egg roll in the warmer I spotted a chaffing dish and small sign. Tamales $1.79. I opened the lid to a Hallelujah chorus of steam rising to the heavens. I selected two tamale parcels and a To Go container (remember, I had just come from breakfast.) At the very first sign of my ebbing tide of fullness from my earlier huevos rancheros, I unwrapped the still warm tamales and had, what I consider, two of the penultimate tamales of my life. These were tasty mo'fo's! I'm just sayin...

Who would think that a simple under $3 bean, cheese, and green chile burrito could be so good! If you know green chile, you can tell that the chile they use is freshly roasted and not from frozen. Can't wait to try their green chile stew, posole and menudo. $11.98 for 32 ounces! Menudo, Wednesday through Sunday. Posole, everyday. Green chile stew, Monday and Tuesday.
