From the huge success of their flagship Bradford restaurant, this branch of Mumtaz had a sterling…read morereputation to maintain. Located in Clarence Dock, the crisp and contemporary exterior only adds to its intrigue. On entering the building, my eyes were thrown into a state of utter confusion, they did not know what to examine first. Next to the entrance, an expansive shop fills the space, a separate enterprise to the restaurant but still under the Mumtaz brand. The shelves groan under the massive variety of cooking sauces, marinades, flavoured mayonnaise, infused oils, chutneys and - perhaps most surprisingly - baby food. There are a range of gift boxes and hampers that would make a unique and interesting present, which also reflect flavours of the region. Reasonably priced ready meals and a delicatessen complete this mecca of takeaway delights. The restaurant is decorated with a black and silver theme. Large black chandeliers and baroque style furniture made out of contemporary materials draw attention to the high quality finish of the space, it looks truly stunning. Although I do have a covert fondness for the picture found in more old fashioned Indian eateries with the nostalgic running waterfall! I have dined at this particular Mumtaz on numerous occasions and have never been disappointed with the taste, quality or freshness of the ingredients. With their cooking style hailing from the Kashmir region, their area of culinary expertise is exemplary through the masala fish and the Karachi gosht. Simply sublime. With a plethora of actors and Bollywood stars, politicians and sporting heroes declaring their passion for the food of Mumtaz, it is evident that their fan base is as diverse as it is huge. Even Queen Elizabeth II professes that the 'food was beautiful and the atmosphere was delightful.' Mumtaz totally deserves that regal accolade - hear hear, Liz.

I am not at all happy with taste of food. I have ordered one prawn curry and one chicken curry with roti (don't remember the names of these curries now). Ordered Rasmalai for dessert while I had ordered mix non-veg starter (for 2). This starter was reasonably better than rest of the entire order. I am not at all happy except for interiors and service I got from serving young staff.

There were 14 in our group and everyone raved about not just the food, but the service & how attentive (without being overbearing) the team of staff were. As there was a few of us we went for a set menu option for popadoms, mixed starter, 3 mains to share between 4 with rice & nan bread... the quality of the food was brilliant, with the meats cooked to perfection and the lamb had that melt in the mouth effect. It's so difficult to decide which curry venue to visit in Leeds, but this one will definitely be right there on the list!

So, one Saturday night, we wandered up to Briggate pour manger. The window display in AM Kitchen and Bar is rather ostentatious, with over sized bottles of Grey Goose and the like (t'were they real, and full...!). The intererior of the Restaurant is lovely. The bar area, with the clocks and the beautiful staircase remains from the Georgetown days. However, its now all painted grey. Which is fine. The waiting staff are all very friendly; they can't do enough and are very attentive. Upon sitting down, we chose our Vino - a tasty sauvignon blanc - which was delicious but a little on the pricey side, we thought. I had tikka paneer for my starter. The paneer was cooked perfectly, however, the batter could have REALLY done with some more seasoning. More salt, more pepper, more spice, more a lot-of-things. Plus, it was served with some salad which was more of an after-thought than anything else. But ah well, I thought, hopefully the mains will be more pleasing. And they were. I had a chicken makhani. It was amazing. Just super. It was mild, but delicately spiced, with tender chicken and loveliness. Wifey had a spinachy paneer dish. It was gorgeous, so rich, warm, and raisiny (do they put raisins in spinach paneer?) but a bit too spicy for me - I am a massive spice-wimp. We had a peshwari naan and basmati rice to accompany our mains. Both were very nice. I was too full for a dessert, but the staff were only too happy to make me a cocktail of my choice. I chose a sex on the beach, because firstly, it is my (shameful) favourite, but also, I know it's fairly easy to make. If you want anything more complicated than some peach schnapps, cranberry juice and vodka then there is a possibility that you *might* be disappointed as they don't advertise themselves as cocktail connaisseurs. In conclusion, we had a lovely time. The food and drink is a bit pricey, but you should definitely give it a go. Plus, the toilets are nice.

That right there is enough for me to love the place -it's been quite some time that I've taken the fancy to go and actually eat a meal in a restaurant at such an obnoxious hour, but thankfully Leeds is just about busy enough as a city to house restaurants that cater to the whims of a wee gin-happy lass like me. Happy days! Yes, it was after a gin-fuelled evening of delights that I decided that I required some solid sustenance before departing homeward, and having commented that I'd never been here prior, we decided to give it a chance. It may well be situated underneath the train station, but even so there's a veritable palace of a restaurant to be discovered within. The décor is certainly resplendent, and makes for a lovely welcome, as you're greeted by rustic woods, quirky carved tables, statuettes and many a decorative lampshade. Service was instantaneous, although it has to be said we were amongst but two other customers, so anything slower paced would have been silly. We sat and ordered a mini feast, as you do when you've partaken of a few tipples, and ordered some Kingfisher and a Mango Lassi to drink alongside our food. The lassi was lovely, although not quite as ridiculously divine as that of Grove Cafe, but even so it's a solid choice. We decided to go for the makhani chicken, one of their recommended dishes, and the lamb gohst. Both came with a ton of meat, good quality so far as I can tell, and the lamb in particular was pretty succulent. Neither dish was smothered in coriander, another bonus, and both were really rather flavoursome. In fact, if you're going to share meals (as we did) mixing the rather spicy and savoury gosht with the creamy rich makhani was a winning formula -I don't mean literally mixing the dishes, but every time the gosht got a little hot I'd temper it with the makhani and that seemed to work out very nicely! We picked an alternative to a nan bread, as it stood out on the menu, and that was particularly noteworthy to me. Unfortunately, I've forgotten the name of it, but it was about a quid more expensive and it was an unleavened flat bread, cooked in oils. It was just delicious, akin to a savoury pancake, and so much nicer than a regular nan. I highly recommend it! Sadly, the mushroom pilau wasn't as nice as I've had in other restaurants (how, I'm not sure- I'd have thought rice was easy?) but even so, the meal overall was brilliant. The menu has a fair few choices, with some being classd as 'must try', but if you're unsure I'm sure the staff could recommend a thing or two. In all, the damage came to about thirty pounds, and for a full meal at such an hour with beer, I thought that was fantastic. Good curry, great service and a lovely place to dine. I'll likely be back, especially if I've been on the gin...
