We headed to this side of the key, vs. the village halfway through our trip, and it's definitely a more chill atmosphere (which we enjoyed). The food as delicious and super fresh. We tried the grouper bites and the special our first night, which is pictured. I believe the daily special was a crab stuffed/skin on Pompano. The photo doesn't do it justice, it was great. I enjoy stopping here when I'm in the area. I happened to be there with live music and the one man band was entertaining but not so loud we couldn't talk at the table. As usual, the fish tacos were delicious and the staff didn't skimp on the Caesar salad dressing. The tiki corn has now made it to me order again lists but the service and dessert menu needs some improvement. We placed our order and everything (apps, salad and meal) arrived at once. Came in fairly late on a weekday and was worried the staff would be annoyed at the time we arrived but the place was still busy and more people came after us. And really the food came out soooo fast it was a non-issue. We started with grouper cheeks which were good and a decent amount for the price. I got the hogfish tacos and my BF got the hogfish filet with 2 sides. The filet came with so much fish and he ate every last bit because it was good (and very hard for us to get at home). Tacos were good as well but I wanted a little something extra so I got the appetizer corn and was happy with it. Downside was service. My friend got the local fish called hogfish, veggies and the black beans and rice! The hogfish is a huge filet that practically took up the whole plate. So tender and flaky. Seasoned to perfection! Five years later and we're finally back and the one thing we talked about the entire time was the ahi nachos. Happy to report they're still just as good as we remembered. Absolutely did not disappoint. My wife and I split the fish tacos and a side salad (not pictured), and the salad was actually a great size for sharing. Between the ahi nachos, shared salad, and the tacos, it ended up being the perfect amount of food for the two of us. We washed it all down with a couple local beers on tap and called it a perfect afternoon. The servers were great and even suggested a beer that paired really well with the meal, which was a nice touch. Parking is easy, and the view adds to the whole experience. You can sit back and watch boats cruising by while others are getting launched or lifted out of the water by the massive forklifts at the marina. It's just a really cool atmosphere. There was live music, but a rowdy bachelorette party made us opt for a quieter corner table inside (they let us seat ourselves, which was great). The boatyard ambience is so cute and cozy. For our main, we went with the fish and chips. Our server (who I think may have been the manager) kindly chose the fish for us since we couldn't decide. The breading was wonderfully crisp and served steaming hot. Again, I personally wished for a little more seasoning or kick, but the freshness and preparation were spot on. From our table, we had a great view of the staff at work, and it honestly felt like watching a big family. They were laughing, chatting with guests, and training a new young team member, encouraging her and showing her the ropes. At one point, a difficult customer came in and made some rude insinuations, but the staff handled it with total grace. They stayed calm, professional, and positive, contacted the owner, resolved it smoothly, and didn't let her negativity affect the vibe. I was really impressed. First time I've ever had Hog Fish and it was great. White, flaky and mild. My wife had the coconut shrimp which I tried and they were great as well. Everything is cooked fresh and you can watch some of it being made on the grill. The Scallops were incredible and so was the hogfish. First time at this resturant. There were 9 of us. We all ordered a different dish. We were all very disappointed in the food we received. As residents of this area for the past 30 years we have frequented many resturants. This one was one of the worst. Food was simply not good. Before placing our orders the menu taker was raving about how great the food was and how everyone that has gone there thinks the food is so great. Why did he need to tell us how good the food was. Maybe because he was trying to talk us into believing this. Of course this is a high tourist area so the tourists do not know any better. Local catches, prepared in a variety of ways (grilled/blackened with complimentary sides, on Sammie's, or tacos) cannot be beat for freshness and flavor. Visitors, enjoy the place that locals LOVE, not only because of the awesome food, but the casual vibe of the marina, and local musical talent. I went on a Friday night, and Joe played tunes from Jim Croce, Bad Company, and Fleetwood Mac, Outdoor fans made the experience very comfortable (even in mid-September)! Our server was confident in her recommendations, and knowledgeable about the fresh catches. The staff was flawless working together to make sure everyone was served promptly, and followed up to make sure the preparation was excellent. I would like to recommend several menu items but can't seem to break away from my favorite- the Gulf Fish tacos! 99% of the tine, I just ask the chef to choose his favorite (because I pretty much love all Gulf fish), and you can't find any fresher hogfish or snapper. My sister, who is visiting Florida, and I wanted to try the lobster bisque but did not want a full cup as we know lobster bisque is generally a very rich soup. The chef was willing to to place the soup in two smaller portions-- essentially sharing one cup of soup. It was the best lobster bisque I have ever had. The bisque was creamy, not salty as some bisques can be and had chunks of lobster in it. We each had the hogfish. Blackened. This fish was unknown to us but it was delightful, the portions were large. It came with two sides. I had the black beans and rice and the wontons with a mango tomato salsa. Scrumptious. My sister's sides were the creamy coleslaw with just the right amount of mayo so as not to be runny and the sweet potato fries which were seasoned with just the right amount cinnamon sugar. Jasmin was our server and she answered all of our questions about the fish which is caught fresh from the Gulf each day. She was very welcoming and made us feel like we were visiting friends.
