I am beyond frustrated with the level of incompetence and lack of professionalism with Spear and specifically this location. I arrived at exactly 9:05 for my appointment today, paid my co-pay, and sat in the waiting area as instructed. After 15 minutes of sitting right in front of the desk, I received an automated email stating I was a "no-show." When I flagged this, the receptionist tried to claim I was "late" and that my therapist, Anushka, needed to reschedule me. This is completely false. I was on time and waiting in the lobby the entire time. To make matters worse, they then suggested I could still be seen 20 minutes into my time slot, which is totally unacceptable and unfair to any patient. I am 32 weeks pregnant and do not have the energy to deal with this kind of run-around. Between the clerical errors and the attempt to blame the patient for their own mistake, I will not be returning. I'd highly recommend looking elsewhere if you value your time and expect basic professional courtesy. read more

A few weeks after I broke my wrist and had surgery, I started PT with Phaeleau. These sessions were the best medical experience I've ever had. I started unable to rotate my wrist at all and within three months I have basically full rotation back. Not only Phaeleau was knowledgeable, but he was a delight to work with. I looked forward to chatting with him at sessions and learning about my hand. With his encouragement I was able to push myself to do the exercises more than I would otherwise have done. I had a nice PT experience with Melanie for two months for my ankle, after my partner recommended her after knee surgery. I wasn't bothered by getting exercise instructions and doing it independently as I didn't need as much one-on-one attention. I had a great experience with the front desk staff, getting appointments rescheduled seamlessly when I couldn't make it. Plenty of lockers and changing room. I've worked with Dylan for ankle and rotator cuff issues. He's truly the best physical therapist I've worked with. I've had PTs that will make a list of exercises based on the type of injury I have, not really paying attention to the nuance of it, but Dylan checks in with me after every exercise and customizes my drills based on my feedback and goals. I'll definitely come back to him if I ever need physical therapy in the future. The people at the front desk and the people who run through the exercises with me are also really lovely. I have had several experiences getting physical therapy and Spear PT on Union St. in Park Slope was by far the best. Anushka Savant, my PT, was very knowledgeable and thorough. She was demanding but also kind and understanding. Each time I arrived, Anushka asked me how I was feeling and listened carefully, adjusting the exercises accordingly. My rotator cuff injury was cured and I now do exercises at home to build strength. The atmosphere at this Spear location was caring, friendly and serious. The other therapists seemed very knowledgeable as well. The staff who supplied me with ice, heat packs and equipment were friendly and efficient as were the receptionists. I was so pleased to learn that SPEAR had opened a location in Park Slope 5th Avenue close to where I live. Prior to this, I would go to their West 44th Street location in Manhattan. The great team at W 44th Street helped me through 2 broken ankles and hand surgery - thank goodness not all at the same time. The trip there are back was worth it but it took a lot of time out of my mornings. For a recent issue with both of my shoulders, I opted to try the Park Slope 5th Ave location. Liza Vega, was the PTA who managed my care. It took a while to build up strength in both of my shoulders but with her guidance, care and choices of exercises I improved each week. This is a very busy location but Liza and her colleagues were focused on my health and improvement. I highly recommend this location and thankful for Liza's care and guidance. read more

Things I dig: - Easy to social distance & everyone wears masks during this time. - Airy, large, light & modern - front desk is away from the PT area (plenty of other places have the front desk in the same area where the PT takes place so you hear everything that's going on - insurance issues, people scheduling etc) -Lockers & bathrooms are clean & modern. - right next to the food coop, so if you're a member, right after PT, you can get some locally sourced organic kombucha infused dog treats for your rescue pup. I used to like SPEAR. Like another reviewer said, the chain has evolved into a PT sweatshop and they are overloading their therapists. Expect your therapist to be dealing with 3 other patients at a time so you'll be spending some time doing a kind of useless warmup, then waiting between exercises for your therapist to finish talking to other patients to get your next exercise. The therapists don't have the time to work with you as they should - they might watch your form for a few reps before they have to run off and deal with another patient. I've WATCHED the patients at this clinic do full sets of exercises with bad form and there's nobody paying attention to correct their form. It's really sad because SPEAR is one of the better 'PT mills.' During my own time at SPEAR, I was handled by over 5 therapists for ONE case because people quit for better jobs, etc. That makes it hard to recover since each therapist needs to familiarize themselves with your case, which results in lost time and progress. I recently saw my surgeon and he said I was 'under-rehabbed' and we both agree it was because I went to a PT mill. I will never go back to SPEAR. I am now at a private practice, getting 1:1 rehab attention from my therapist. I highly encourage everyone else to do the same. SPEAR, treat your therapists with dignity. They went into this career to help people, not make your chain rich. read more

Spear is the first health institution that I have now left negative reviews for. They charged me 250 dollars for two visits , explaining that it was going towards my deductible. They filed the claims incorrectly and while the claim was endlessly being processed I paid off my deductible with other services. So at the moment they have taken 250 dollars from me for nothing, when my co pay was supposed to be 30 dollars per session. Additionally when my claim did finally go through three months later - on my claim it says I will owe over 600 dollars, because the specific provider rendering the service is out of network. I have been in endless loop contact with them, with no resolution. I have since then had physical therapy where there were no issues with my insurance, and I had 1-1 time with my therapist, unlike spear that just shuffles you off, with no regard with how you are doing. This is a terrible organization and a scam. Please don't go here if you want real care. read more

I'm a bit angry that I waited 5 weeks for an appt with a particular PT and was then given their trainee when I showed up to my first appointment. If I was open to just seeing anyone I wouldn't have waited for 5 weeks! I was in a lot of pain but knew working with a competent PT of my choice was worth the wait. The staff all seem very nice, to their credit. This is an aside: I've since read about labor practices and pay at places like SPEAR and it sounds really awful for the PTs. No wonder there's turnover and an atmosphere of chaos in this office. I will be looking for a smaller PT office moving forward. read more

Made an anonymous account just to leave this review as I feel it is important to let people know. This place is a physical therapy sweatshop. They will book you with 3-4 other patients at the same time and then have someone who isn't a PT and who has no credentials show you things you can learn online for free. They do not care about you. Everyone is very young and seems to be right out of school and just doing what management tells them to. Always new faces, so turn around seems high. Always have a money issue or some excuse as to why there is an overcharge or why your appointment isn't actually that day. Super disorganized and just a crappy feeling to be somewhere you are just a number. It is so obvious, it's painful. Like at least try to pretend you don't book 5 patients for one person an hour...we aren't stupid. Look elsewhere for your care. The company is a factory and continuing to grow and become less and less about PT. Your level of care will be surface and your time wasted. Would not trust them with a serious injury. read more

My daughter, age 13, was referred to Spear, for knee pain. She didn't want to go, but we did the session, and are happy we did. Austin, the physical therapist, proved capable and personable. Went here to start post-surgical PT for a broken ankle, and only left because the location proved too costly/difficult for me to get to consistently with my condition (I found another spot much closer by my apartment). Anyone that's broken an ankle bad enough for surgery will tell you that it's no fun at all, and that it's hard to feel like you're actually making progress post-op, especially at the beginning before you can start weight-bearing. However, my experience working with Vinny at Spear Park Slope made the process much, much easier and gave me a huge physical and mental boost as I started my rehab journey. Vinny himself is personable and was always able to answer my questions, address my concerns, and help resolve specific physical issues with my ankle/foot that were bugging me. He's great, and there's no question I left Spear in magnitudes better shape than I was when I arrived. The space itself is also super nice -- bright and clean, with plenty of space. Admins are super responsive and its easy to change appointments and book new ones. Highly, highly recommend. read more

This is the best PT clinic in Brooklyn! The clinic is large and has lots of open space, the staff are super friendly, and it's clean! Your temperature is checked at the front desk when you enter the clinic, the staff disinfect every single piece of equipment once you're done with it and there's hand sanitizer ready for you almost everywhere! I've gone to a few PT clinics through the past few years and I have always felt like I was just another patient that they were trying to get in and get out. But at this clinic, you get a sense of community because the staff constantly go out of their way to make you feel welcomed and comfortable, whether it's by offering you a cup of coffee or by chatting with you for a bit. If you're looking for a PT clinic, you need to stop by SPEAR! read more

I made an appointment, and even that process wasn't great. I wasn't told what to wear, or to be 15 minutes early (most places because of covid won't allow you to be early to an appointment. I then show up and they want all the forms I filled out online, refilled out, which is fine, but then they cut that time into your appointment. I was wearing workout pants, and the physical therapist said I should of worn shorts (mind you I signed up for lymphatic massage... nowhere did it say it would be more or less than that... She tugged on my knee for 4 minutes, and it's been swollen and worse since. I'm writing this a week later because although my experience was awful, I thought if it helped my knee that would be great. I'm now down a 100 bucks, and worse than when I started. I had previously started acupuncture and my knee was doing great I could fully bend and straighten, and now I can't do either again. Also- no social distancing. A man was on the table about 3 feet max away from me. i'm so bummed. read more
