If you are on the look out for your new best friend, meet some of the residents at SPCALA! I went in to meet a dog that I saw on petfinder.com and I was met with a very nice facility, clean, and not overcrowded. I did a quick interview and I was able to meet my future dog. Extra thank you to Cheyenne because she was such a big help through the process. They often have adoption deals so be sure to keep an eye out for the next promotion. I really like that the dogs go through some basic training and handling and they are often worked with. During pick up, I was given a very generous care package to ensure a great start. Amazing place! My family and I adopted a dog named Red (now named Apricot) from here a year ago and he's an amazing addition to the family! He spent five months in the shelter and can't imagine how this love bug wasn't adopted sooner. Safe to say that he is happy and has a new foster sister to play with. Me and my boyfriend came to this location to see a dog that I had seen online *Fawn . Front desk was very helpful and showed me other dogs as well but I really had my eyes on Fawn and wanted to meet her . They Informed me Fawn had came From a hoarding case and asked me some questions to see if we were going to be a good fit for her . We visited a number of shelters looking for our family dog, and found the animal village through LB's Animal Services building next door. It's very clear that this branch of SPCALA is doing amazing work and has staff that truly care about animal welfare. The facilities are clean, the dogs are healthier than anywhere else we went, and they knew more about each dog than any other trainers. The process of adoption was seamless once we decided on a dog. Before decision, they asked about our goals for life with a dog and pointed us in the direction of a few options that would make sense based on their experiences handling each personality. We immediately fell in love with Arthur and brought him home a couple days later. Note-they don't hold dogs for more than a day after adoption fees are paid. This makes sense, but just something to keep in mind for anyone walking in who isn't as prepped at home as they'd like to be. I want to shout out to the staff and volunteers for helping make our dog experience so wonderful. Arthur-who we now call Artie-is doing so well with crate training, walking on a leash, basic commands like sit, stay, down, shake, etc. and we've only had him home a couple days. It's clear he was well socialized and cared for with love and truly feels like a dream dog for our family. Thank you! read more

I was calling pet supply stores to look for a specific good quality dog food brand (Nature's Logic) in a specific flavor (sardine). Other stores sold the brand, but not that flavor. They offered to special order it, but I did not want to wait. I continued calling from the Nature's Logic "Where to Buy" page which led me to spcaLA Marketplace. Success! Marketplace sells the sardine flavor. I headed down there. If like me you have never been here, PAY ATTENTION. You will arrive at El Dorado Park where there is a toll booth at the entrance. There is a sign with a menu of "Vehicle Entrance Fees" starting at $6 and up. I u-turned to exit & pulled over safely on the street. I called Marketplace & asked them about parking. They explained that when you go to the toll booth, tell the person that you are shopping at the Marketplace. The toll booth person directs you to drive in & turn left until it dead ends, then turn right & continue until you arrive at Marketplace. The point is the "Vehicle Entrance Fees" is for people going to the park. You do NOT pay the fee if you are going to the Marketplace. There was plenty of parking once I arrived at Marketplace. The Marketplace store itself is small but clean & tidy. It is not vast like a chain store, but what they DO carry is good to high-end quality foods (not Iams / Pedigree / Purina / Hill's Science Diet / Royal Canin crap), the kind you usually see in boutique & other better pet stores, plus misc. pet supplies. The bonus is that the prices are a few dollars cheaper than in boutique stores The nice woman behind the counter explained that they get "Shelter Pricing." This place is amazing and such a safe haven for fur babies! We stopped by one day when we were looking for another little one to add to our family and I'm so glad I did! The kennels are incredibly clean, the animals look like they're well taken care of and they have a ton of volunteers who genuinely adore the animals. The process was easy and we were able to take our little Willowbee home right after he had his surgery. The have a pet shop located right next to the entrance and you can buy pretty much anything you need. The money you spend there goes back to the fur babies which is awesome! I wish I could rate this organization better because I've trained there for a couple of years, but the way this incident has been handled overshadows it all. In a Monday night agility class with instructor Robert (5/20/24), a male student very loudly and proudly made a rape joke. He repeated it more than once. The instructor did not shut it down. I tried to discuss with the instructor and was so upset I couldn't really articulate myself, and not only did he blow me off, he seemed angry at me for bringing it up at all. I reached out to the Sr. Director of Community Engagement, who has been very kind and helpful in the past, and reported the issue to her. She says she investigated and essentially the only thing that has occurred is that they emailed the male student and gave him a warning - and if he does it again, he'll be banned. That's it. As a survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse, I have to either give up my class, change classes, or continue to go to class with a man who thinks it's totally okay to make rape jokes, loud and proud. I asked a number of trainers who own their own facilities what their response would be, and all said that no question they would ban this male student. There is no excuse for it. Allowing him to continue in class and I have to quit because I don't want to be around this person who makes rape jokes, sexual harassing and promoting violence against women (and men) - this promotes rape culture. I am currently still in two classes, but I will not be continuing at spcaLA when my class sessions have finished. I do not recommend training at spcaLA if you are a woman. It makes me sad to not be able to recommend spcaLA, because I very much love working with Robbi, and have some good memories. But I do not condone the promotion of rape culture or support organizations that do not take it seriously. A "warning" is not taking it seriously. read more

I went to the rescue looking for a specific cat, but luckily he had gone on to a rescue and had a lot of people interested in him. 'Show me the black cats' I cried! Apparently black cats are not very popular and I have zero idea why. I always heard they were lucky. Susan took me to a room with so many cuddle bugs looking for new homes, and I met Meowzer. Little black boy, found on the streets of Long Beach. He's had worms and a cold and now has his forever home with me. As I write this he is walking round the bedroom with a toy mouse in his mouth, and has not stopped purring since I brought him home. I used to love this place, too. Now I feel like I've seen the dark side. It's NOT a no-kill shelter. This needs to be made more obvious. It's heart-breaking to learn that many of the animals there will be euthanized because they are too young (not weaned), too unsociable, or otherwise unadaptable. I wish more people knew about the numbers of animals put-down at the adoption center and the adjacent animal control center. The economy has made it that much harder for pets to find homes and stay in them. read more

My husband and I stopped by the Long Beach shelter last Sunday. We had recently started our search for a new family member. The setup at the Long Beach shelter is a little confusing since the facility is shared by both the SPCA and Long Beach Animal Care Services. The facility is relatively clean and well-lit, with nice atriums in the "cottages". The dogs' kennels seemed to be well-maintained - especially for a city shelter - and they had a variety of toys and blankets. We met up with a volunteer (Ryan?) and he walked us through the buildings. Soon we found our adorable little girl, now named "Mocha". Ryan was very patient with us as we met her in the off-leash Meet 'n' Greet area (a nice big pen, maybe 20' x 40') and then he walked her on leash around the facility so we could see how she behaved. When it was clear we were getting serious about adopting, we asked if we could see her walk by a cat since we have a cat at home. The cat volunteer was also very nice and patient and graciously accommodated our request, taking Mocha to see a cat in the main adoption entrance and allowing us to watch her reaction. We then asked to see her reaction to a dog, since Mocha hadn't yet joined the play group, and both volunteers were again helpful and patient. We decided to go for it and adopt her and she has been so wonderful and loving! Mocha is in great condition despite being at the shelter for 13 days. Her records note that she was spayed, dewormed, microchipped, and vaccinated; we were given the detailed medical record for her spay surgery. The SPCA adoption process was easy and straightforward. They were running an adoption special last weekend so her fee was only $50 instead of the usual $155. There is a pet store right next to the SPCA and when you adopt you get a bunch of coupons! It was great being able to go pick out a collar and leash while the adoption paperwork was being processed. We also got coupons for a free vet visit and a discounted training session. It's clear that the people here care about animals and their potential adopters. We had a great experience, and found our new best friend! read more

I was looking to adopt another furry family member last June. I tried a few other shelters and adoption agencies but didn't find the right fit for my existing son, Jaxx. I adopted Jaxx two years ago and he had come from an abusive background so it took a lot of time to earn his trust and break him out of his fear of humans. My husband and I made good progress over the years we have had Jaxx and it was finally the time to get him a little brother or sister. I usually check out the website for available dogs prior to any visit but it never worked out as planned. So, I came to this location on a whim just to browse. That's when I found my Cody. He looked like a rag doll. He was welcoming but not overly hyper and excited. I observed how he responded to other dogs and me just quietly squatting by his kennel. I found out when the available date he was to apply for an application and had my husband come to complete the application if he felt he was a good fit. After he applied, the shelter staff encouraged him to bring Jaxx later that afternoon for a meet and greet. Him and Jaxx interacted and it was a good match. We finalized the adoption over the weekend. He was scheduled to be neutered on Sunday and pick up Monday at their contracted facility in Los Alamitos. The adoption process was easy and everyone was very helpful. This shelter maintains a clean environment, staff and volunteers are all friendly and helpful. Please, please, please, if you are considering buying a dog, think about adoption first. I have seen all kinds of dogs here, including expensive small toy breeds. After I ended up adopting a dog who had been living on a golf course, we went here to look for a companion for him. On our second visit, we fell in love with a puppy, brought our other puppy in to meet her, then adopted her. +6\./; - That's from her. I usually delete her input when I'm typing, but since this is about her, I left it in. She just jumped on my lap to grab the ball she just threw up in the air. (I think she's trying to show off and make you go adopt someone too.) Back to the human...We had to wait a few days so she could get spayed. I picked her up at the Vet (with that huge cone on her head) and brought my baby home. We had to take her back in a few days later to have the stitches removed, but as I had already guessed, she had removed them herself. (She is a ninja dog.) Go. Okay... After two weeks of shelter "hoping" looking for a companion for CoOkie whom I've adopted from here going on two, almost three years ago. I had no idea how unclean and almost cruel some other shelter/adoptions places/staff members can be. After visiting the seaaca Downey sites, and a couple others, this place is heaven compare to those other sites. They take pride in the animals and facilities. Their staff is kind, helpful, and clean. They genuinely love their animals, want to be there for them, and find them forever homes. Here I don't have to question whether they gave them their shots or deworming, because they do. Their staff do not carry a sense of superiority and an attitude of I'm doing you a favor like these other places do. If you plan to adop from spcaLa, know that you are adooting a healthy pet who has an evaluation that is accurate, and if they say they work with them on manners trust them, they work with them on manners. When they tell you they have their flea/booster/vaccines, trust them they have. This is place to go and adopt. read more

I was first line to adopt a very adoptable dog. I went to the wrong side of the counter (not the spcala side because the dog was in the other kennel). They said because I got to that side of the counter late (after 10am), that I am not eligible to be in the drawing for the dog. They should have signs or ask at the front so you don't miss an opportunity for your dog. I was legit the first person in line, and the first through the door. Their policies must change. I would not recommend adopting from them or supporting them because of this unclear and unfair policy. read more

We adopted a pair of cats last summer, and all went well. The foster family for the kittens was there and gave us the 411 on the kittens PLUS photos of the kittens from a week or so old on. I do have a concern, although it does not affect my rating. We wanted to adopt a dog, as did about 7 other families, so we went on the day the dog was available. In my opinion, the lottery process needs to be changed. There were about 8 families hoping to adopt the same dog, and we all made the effort to get there on a mid-week day at 10 am. (I'm not sure if all or most took time off from work, but this was a huge hassle.) We ended up adopting from SEAACA, and they had a first come, first served, plus a wait list for the dog we wanted to adopt. I appreciate the staff for all they do for the animals as well as handling 'one cat from crazy' clients. They have a well deserved 5 stars. read more
