I contacted the SPCA Montreal ( head office), Les coteauX, and Vaudreuil to ask for help regarding my cats broken leg. I was looking for assistance in finding an organism that can help with lower cost surgeries for domestic animals because am unable to afford the astronomical cost of a regular vet. The answers were: We can't help you. The 3 options given were: 1. Figure it out on your own 2. Abandon your animal at a shelter 3. I really loved working there , loved taking care of the animals and people were very nice to me:) felt like I had finally found a job which I was passionate about even if the pay is not that great.. but in the end, even if I thought that everything was going well, some people were talking behind my back instead of just directly talking to me about the issues. I ended up losing my job with no clear explanation of what happened exactly. It was frustrating because I loved sharing my passion with others that loved animals too but turns out not everyone wants the best for you or anyone. I just know that I'm worth more than an association that believed lies of some backstabbers that just wanted me out of the picture. They took very good care of my cats when i took them there for sterilization and it's amazingly affordable! We have 5 cats so we wouldn't be able to afford to do their vaccination or sterilization anywhere else. read more

DOES Anyone care out there ? A few of us have been trying to rescue an abused dog in MONTREAL since last MAY 30th 2024. So many emails to all levels including the DIRECTOR ALAIN TESSIER. He and many others have promised to call back. NOT a privacy issue simply want to know when rescued so we can give it the life it so desperately needs. It lives beside my friend, she has a camera on their house and no one has come to investigate. NEVER OUTSIDE OR WALKED, AS SHE WORKS FROM HOME AND CAN SEE. The dog was last seen September 2024 crying alone outside at door no room to walk, and it's skin was peeling off and covered in fungus, no water, We called the spca no one came, police came and said call spca. We would have taken the dog, but that is illegal, and thought the spca would do their job,. Emailed, called again, no response no calls returned. Have sent pics as proof and Vet letters as was taken once by my friend who paid $1000 for check up, as owners let her, and vet said she is highly neglected and was in dire need of meds which we paid for. She told owner that the Vet said the Dog must be seen for follow up but never was. I called the Vet and they never diid follow up. I have called the spca and emailed this info 20 times, still they don't help this poor skin infected dog. They should be ashamed to say they care. I guess the Media needs to know now. read more

I had an excellent experience adopting from here even during quarantine. I followed the website for available adoptions and noticed that options were disappearing faster than appearing which is awesome for the pets. The only problem with the website is that you can't just click "interested" on an animal, you have to go through a separate page and fill out a form that only allows you to specify the name and species of the pet. So when they remove the animal from the website, you can't go back and reference the description or pictures of the animal. I got a phone call about 2 days after I filled out the form for a cat, but I had already filled out for other cats too that got adopted by others before me and I couldn't remember which one I was being called about. Anyways, despite that, I was informed about the medical conditions of the cat and asked about his behaviors. I was afraid they were sugar coating things and was nervous, but the person on the phone seemed genuine. I was given an appointment for 2 days after the phone call. I showed up a bit early and they allowed me to sit inside and wait. It was a little odd since there was not a lot happening inside, and they were pretty strict to the timing of the appointment. I was called upstairs by name and allowed into the backroom to see the cat I wanted to adopt. He was in a cage among other cats, and they warned me he would be afraid. But when I was introduced, he let me pet him and even flipped himself over immediately to let me rub him. It was adorable. I felt I got really lucky. I was handed a bunch of paperwork for the microchip details and the agreement. They give you a "warranty" incase the adoption has unforseen health issues. They also told me recommendations for when to follow-up with a vet and check for fleas. They also informed me of potential gingivitis to take care of sooner rather than later. I was out pretty fast after that, and it came to about $140. The only minor snag was I asked on the phone if I could buy a carrier there and was told yes, but when I was there they didn't have any. So they gave me a heavy duty carrying cardboard box to put the cat it. I went home via the metro with no problems. My adopted cat, Astro, has been amazing. He's about 1 year old. So far everything they said about him has kept true. He has no behavior issues, he got used to me and my apartment super fast, and he's adorable to boot. I was afraid that he would have clawing or litter box issues. Nope! Astro from day 1 was well acquainted with a litter box and he doesn't claw at my furniture at all. Even when he "kneads" me, he's very gentle and doesn't dig his claws into me. I'm disappointed I didn't do this sooner. I never imagined owning a cat, always wanted a dog, but I'm converted. And the SPCA made it painless to do. They didn't let me down and they treated Astro well when they found him. read more

The work the SPCA is doing to support the Montreal community is astounding. I know that there are obviously days that are better than others but their volunteers and staff are extremely knowledgeable and kind. When you are looking to adopt a pet, they will give you a questionnaire to fill out to make sure you're suitable for the animals they have and the particular pet you would like to adopt. I think this is very important to make sure the person who adopts the pet will do their due diligence for the animal in question. I know that weekends are pretty busy. This means that you will need to get their as soon as they open. I saw a few frustrated people who were impatient but the folks working there are doing the best they can (and again, many are volunteers!) They also have a lIttle boutique supported by Mondou. You can buy supplies there if you haven't got a carrier or toys or food!! read more

I'm a sucker for pets. One day, a pregnant kitty came by our house pawing at the patio door asking for some food. I felt so bad that I started feeding her (I know, bad), but she kept coming back after that. I did this for a while until one day she came back with baby kitties! I was so happy, even though I can never get a pet (my mother is allergic to fur), I now had a small family of kitties coming everyday. Sadly, winter was coming and I figured it would be best to bring them to the SPCA where they could be cared for and adopted. The SPCA didn't really help us capture them but they did accept them and made sure they got adopted by good families. They give you a paper with an ID number so I was able to call back and ask if each one had been adopted or not. So I'm really happy with how that turned out. I understand that they can't do much to help you where you are but if you bring injured pets or abandoned pets, they will take care of them. I really hope more people start adopting because they always have so many pets that need good homes. read more

I was a volunteer here for a few years, working in the Exotic Animal Departement. This specific department is run entirely by volunteers and receives funding from donations and sponsors only. I admire all those who make this place work as I know how exhausting and draining it can be to take care of all these animals. For those who don't know, the SPCA does have a lot more going on than just dogs and cats. This is a great place to adopt rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds... They get so many different types of animals it's crazy. On occasion, a pig and rooster made an appearance! There is a PetFinder section on the SPCA website if you go under the Adoption tab, you'll be able to see a bunch of photos and descriptions of pets available for adoption, many of which are not at the shelter, but in foster homes. I strongly encourage anyone looking for a pet to give these ones a second chance. read more

Although my dealings with the SPCA in the past have been at an acceptable level, no more will I consider them for any dealings with pets. My roommate adopted 2 kittens with special needs from the SPCA. The special needs aspect was that one was an abused cat who refuses human interaction, and the other kitten is going blind. When they were adopted the second kitten was sneezing and we were advised that if the sneezing continues to bring her back for treatment. As two students who work, we were unable to bring the kitten to the SPCA in the 5 days following her having issues due to their hours and our availabilities. We did however contact them to report the problem and ask how to go about it and were told we needed to bring the kitten back in. When the weekend came and we contacted them we were informed that it was day 17, 2 days past their "warranty" of sorts, even though they had already been informed of the problem a week earlier and knew that we would only bring the kitten on the weekend - they never said "well your warranty ends in 3 days so you can't bring her this weekend". At this point the kitten is still sick from an illness that the clinic was aware of her having when they allowed us to adopt her, without supplying treatment and are refusing to treat her even though they were fully engaged by us on two occasions prior to "expiration date" and advised us to come whenever we could. On top of that, the infection has spread to my older cat of 18 years who may now have to be put down because of the recklessness of the SPCA's staff. read more

Not even comparable to the Berger Blanc which neglect and murder perfectly healthy young animals to save $$$. This SPCA is great. Got my cat from there and those people actually care about animals and their well being. I've donated several times and they let me go upstairs where they have a few cats running around playing and downstairs where they treat the sick pets, everything was clean. The woman who was in charge of taking care of my cat after we adopted him ( he had the flue) was amazing and showed me around and answered my questions. Two weeks after Chester was perfectly fine, he was 5 at the time, is now almost 12. No secrecy or hidden agenda there. Please adopt a pet, do not buy one, save a life, they need you !!! read more

I came here the other day to see how to volunteer and the shelter. It's a great place, always filled with people, when you see the animals, you want to take them all home! I wish I could but people I live with don't :( It's a really clean place, and the people who work there are mostly volunteers, and and treat the animals really well. I work a few blocks away so I'd like to lend a helping hand and cuddle with some animals and show them that we care. It's really dangerous, you will want to leave with most of the animals that are there. Pass by and see what they can offer you for a new companion. read more

I went to adopt a dog, and the lady that asistend us was supper polite but it seamed like she didn't know the dog that i was looking forward to adopt, at the end she didn't even let us meet the dog, because to her we weren't compatible for the dog according to her, just because we didnt live in a apartment. She was giving the dog a really bad rap, saying she wouldn't be a good pet for us because she is too noisy. We stayed there for a good 1h looking at the dog, and she was not like the lady described. To add to that i have addopted a dog from them before and she was giving a bad rap as well, and arrived home she was a very different dog. Im am very upset with this spca, not giving us a change to meet the dog, and asuming we wouldn't make a great family for her. read more

It takes a lot of heart to work in a place like this and the employees I've dealt with were all great. I mostly have to recognize their reception process for when you have to drop off an animal that you can no longer take care of. This is not always an easy process to go through emotionally as this is sometimes (like it was in my case) a situation out of one's control. Their process to receive the animals is simple and easy and does not add any emotional pressure to something that is not easy to start with. I was walking around when I noticed a really injured bird. Feeling really badly for the bird, I decided to call the SPCA. The woman who answered told me that they don't cover the NDG area and gave me another number. After calling that other number for injured animals, the lady on the line told me that the SPCA would need to handle this. So, I call back and get the very same woman on the phone and explained what I was just told. She then tells me to bring the bird to them. I didn't have a car so I told her it would be impossible. The lady was very rude and lacked manners. She then tells me to capture the bird in a box. I explain that there are no boxes around and the bird being very badly injured wad barely moving anyways and I assured her he wasn't going anywhere. She then kept interrupting me and again was rude and obnoxious! I then told her that I was trying to do the right thing and I didn't appreciate her constant interruptions and rudeness. Terrible service by this employee she shouldn't be in the helping animals industry. She'd be more suited for a job that involves no human interaction whatsoever. read more

I went to the Montreal SPCA today to look for a dog to adopt. I was first served by a wonderful young lady with great customer service. When my name was finally called I went and looked at all the dogs, there was one or two in particular that I looked at with my partner. I went and told the lady who first served us that we were interested in adopting a dog. She gave us a form to fill out and was told to wait for another member of staff to come and speak with us. We waited more than half and hour and as we were about to be called, another member of staff looked at our form and immediately asked us questions and judged us. We waited a little longer and we were finally asked to go upstairs and follow the lady (who asked us a bunch of questions before hand). Before we even got to the desk, she already judged us that we weren't suitable to have any pets overall. She began to list problems with the dog and never once asked about our history with pets nor how we are as individual. She showed us the video of the puppy and began to show and list ALL the bad aspects of the puppy. Eventually she took the puppy out and we were placed in a room with him, whilst she went and made a 'call'. One of the aspects I pick up from the member of staff was that the puppy didn't like having the leash put on him...however, I managed to put the leash on the puppy three times without any problems and the puppy was not fazed by it at all. Then it made me think whether the puppy did indeed have all these 'issues' that she listed. The member of staff eventually came back into the room and she told us that the breeder had said that we weren't suitable for Falcon. At this stage I was very upset as she already judged us before we went in and never asked us about our history with pets or our behavior. She then turned us away without even offering the other dogs that were there (we were willing to choose another dog). My whole experience was horrible, the particular member of staff (who we still don't know her name) was rude and judgmental. Not only did she think we weren't suitable for the puppy, but she gave that impression that we weren't suitable for ANY PETS! The member of staff in particular was a mid - late thirties woman, with dark blonde hair, wore glasses, and drank a lot of coca cola. She was very negative towards the puppy and to us. read more
