This is an incredible Italian Deli hidden in a suburb of Sydney, Australia. All the deli meats like…read moremortadella, bresaola and salami are imported. I came here to get some deli meat for sandwiches during our stay but left with a full heart and excellent memories! The first visit, I arrived around 10:30AM on a Saturday. I had to wait in line only like 45 minutes! Talk about popular! The second visit, I arrived around 8:30AM on a Saturday and didn't have to wait in line but for 5 minutes! Woohoo! Almost everyone was getting these massive custom sandwiches on focaccia with fresh sliced Italian meats, fresh cheese, marinated veggies, arugula and much more! They are HUGE! I just wanted the deli meat so I could pair it with fresh sourdough bread I got elsewhere since it's better for my messed up digestive system. No problem! Mortadella with olives or black pepper? Yes! Salami? Yes Bresaola? Yes I also got marinated mushrooms, spicy olives, artichoke hearts, and tomatoes. All are FANTASTIC! But, it's the staff and the clientele that make this place special. Sam recognized me on my second visit and asked me, after I got my food, if I'd like a coffee... Espresso please! Then, he invited me to stay a while. I realized they have real imported Italian pasta made from Italian wheat which is not a common thing to find. I got two boxes! Joe explained these are imported from Sicily with Sicilian wheat and they also have pasta imported from Napoli made with local wheat! I got that too! They also have numerous other imported items like Panettone, pesto and much more! Customers joined in the enthusiastic conversation to tell me how awesome Raineri's is since I was obviously a (American) tourist and a new guy! I love the enthusiasm! They all asked me why I was there and I explained I was in Sydney for my 35th wedding anniversary! The unhurried conversation flowed. I can't wait to return! Life is molto bene with a local, unique, unhurried, friendly, delicious and enthusiastic hidden gem!

The real deal Italian Deli and probably the best I've ever been too…read more I was fortunate to come here on a gourmet food tour of Sydney when I visited in June of 2010. It's family owned and has been for a couple of generations by the Raineri's. It's an established amazing deli. The place is crowded, bustling and filled to the brim with imports from Italy and local Italian products. On the tour we were treated to platters of olives, salami, prosciutto, chicken, octopus, cheeses, bread and olive oil. They even made a pasta right at the counter using their very own homemade lemon pasta, with a bit of cheese, parsley and olive oil. Now I don't know that much about Italian antipasto, although I like to think Bay Cities in Santa Monica is the southern California authority, but I can safely say Raineri's blows Bay Cities out of the water. Their prosciutto melted in my mouth, I have never had anything even close to it in the States. The cheeses were out of this world, especially the ricotta; I could have eaten spoonfuls with nothing else. I bought some of their asiago and a dozen slices of salami home, which I ate the rest of my time in Sydney. Stellar!!!!!!!

This little Greek deli is a foodie's delight!…read more Pop through the narrow doorway and be greeted by refrigerated cabinets loaded with huge rounds, chunks and wedges of cheese from all over the world. Fill your crackers with taleggio, Greek kefalotyri, buffalo, one-year-old grana padano, goat's cheese, New Zealand tasty, gruyére, Dutch gouda, Tasmanian Heritage Blue Opal and Castello. I've stocked up for ladies' wine and cheese nights here - and no matter how many rounds I buy, it pretty much always disappears before I can even refill their glasses. The chilli buffalo cheese in particular is fantastic! Keep moving beyond the cheese cabinet and you'll find containers full of different types of olives and meat products like salami. Towards the back of the shop, there are shelves full of deli goods, such as beans and seeds. Take a culinary travel trip and fill up the shopping basket with all kinds of goodies. This family-owned deli has been around for decades and is an institution in these parts. The traditional background music alone will get you in the mood for Greek feasting!

Walk on through the dark and tiny doorway and a very long store packed from floor to ceiling emerges. There's endless cheese, including huge slabs of haloumi ready to slice and throw on your next BBQ (I drizzle mine with olive oil, lime juice and chilli) and a number of different fetas along with cheese form other parts of the world. The olive section is out of this world and also features crazy pickled items. It's a DIY affair so grab a tub and fill it up with whatever you like. There's tins of beans, breads, frozen filo pastry and a hundred other items. You can get just about anything here to create a big Mediterranean feast, and it won't cost you an arm and a leg! The older Greek couple who own this store have been here forever... well, for at least the last 10 or so years that I've been visiting. They're kind and helpful and always willing to offer advice on items or, if you're lucky as I was recently, give you a chunk of halva to nibble on!

I was initially attracted to the smell of sizzling sausages that were being cooked as samples to passers-by. The sausages were fantastic - very meaty and perfectly seasoned. I couldn't resist a quick look at the cellophane wrapped packages of excellent quality pasta and rice in a range of spelt, polenta and gluten free pastas as well as the normal shapes and sizes. They also stocked a wide variety of Tracklements condiments - delicious hand made products from Wiltshire in the UK, such as organic mint jelly, onion marmalade and horseradish cream - only the finest quality ingredients are used, most of which are grown on the farm in which they're based. In addition, this would be a great place to pick up Toby's Estate Coffee beans, cruskits, crackers, biscuits, dried porcini, anchovy fillets, vinegars, pastes, vinaigrettes and oils. It is also very much worth noting that Deli Cucina stock an impressive range of Maxims de Paris chocolate hampers. These would make a fabulous Christmas or birthday present - groaning with tuiles, truffles, pralines and a number of other chocolaty delicacies. Deli Cucina makes a brilliant lunchbox destination - freshly made salads, pastas and cheeses are just waiting to be piled in to takeaway boxes. Delicious, healthy and high quality, this is a gem of a deli that the Easter suburbs are lucky to have.

Forget "sandwiches", this place makes sandwizes because the guy that runs this place is a wizard!…read moreHe knows his flavours, he knows his breads (which he collects at 4AM every morning), and him and his staff go above and beyond to look after the customer. We drove past this place one afternoon and the wife and I knew we had to eat here. We found street parking and made our way over. From the outside the red neon sign gave a very strong impression. Inside it was a little bit dull but that doesn't matter when you start to read the menu board. All the menu items suggest bold American flavours. Choose your filling, bread (sourdough or rye) and whether you want it fresh or toasted. I was worried about my sandwich being toast until I was told that they'd add the lettuce afterwards to prevent it from wilting. The food came out quick. My wife asked for soy milk in her coffee which they had run out of. However one of the staff went to the corner store, JUST FOR US, to buy a new carton. I was amazed by this. This truly was a selfless act and to me it defined what great customer service is. Our food came out quickly and tasted amazing. I ordered the hoagie sandwich. I know in The States a hoagie is this massive bread roll sandwich thing, but this being Australia they brought out a toasted sandwich which tasted just like a hoagie. Perfect down to the last bite. The staff are great company and extremely friendly. I want... nay, NEED to come back here to try some of the other sandwiches. A great place for a meal which isn't too heavy but will leave you thoroughly satisfied.

Nortons has a great selection of olives (my picks: the manchego stuffed, anchovy stuffed, Sicilian and chilli stuffed) and cheeses, plus I'm sure they've got a good range of deli meats as well - I should say that as a non-meateater I didn't really pay this much attention. Aside from the antipasto ingredients, Nortons has fantastic selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, which is fantastic when the Coles upstairs disappoints. Not only is everything stacked and presented immaculately, but the grocers are more than willing to help you choose the right produce, selecting the one that's just ripe enough for whenever you may need it. They have a great selection of fresh and dry pastas, passatas and various other Italian ingredients, and come Christmas and Easter times their shelves are loaded with dozens of panettone varieties - my boyfriend's Italian mum (not a Sydney-sider) has us source on from Nortons every holidays. Given all it's good points, and the fact that Norton Street Grocer is open 'til 7pm almost every night, I have no excuse for missing it. Perhaps its just to ensure I don't eat that well all the time.
