It's just one of those "Adult Things" that you have to do. This was my first visit to Jephson Street Dental and it was just for a regular check-up. My dental hygienist, Rhonda, was thorough and gave some great tips on more effective flossing (I'll admit, I'm the world's worst flosser). Soon after the dentist came in for her check-up portion of the appointment. Now, what had me leaving my appointment suitably impressed was her observation of a few issues (all interlinked) that could also be causing issues within my jaw. Swiftly she excused herself and came back with two cards to a two specialists she wants me to see. Never, have I had a dentist go that extra step and actually look at dental well-being as something linked to the rest of how our body functions.

It exists! A dental group that doesn't judge!…read more After visiting Essential Dental Group a few times (turns out my teeth have more than a few fillings) I was whole-heartedly ready to recommend this to others, and have done so. The business was recommended to me by my doctor, whose advice I trust. I actually decided to drop in to Essential Dental before my first booking, since I was in the area. When I asked for an initial booking, I expected to hear "Well, we have a space opening up in about 5 weeks..." and instead got, "What time? This afternoon?" There's always an opening at Essential Dental, but I can attest this has nothing to do with the quality of work here. Hidden away on the top floor at Paddington Central, even some staff working in the larger complex had to be informed by me that the place actually existed. Not only have I been able to book appointments at the last minute, they're also fine about cancelling appointments, too (which I don't like to do to them because they're so damn nice. Even if they are dentists.) And the appointments are very, very cheap relative to that of other dentists. The dentist himself is aware that people like to watch their money, so he'll give you several options for immediate action if you're cash-strapped during a particular appointment (or want to chicken out of another filling). Or, if money is no object, he'll fix up whatever you want then and there. I knew I had a few issues with the molars up the back when I rocked up here. I expected the usual dental professional's overreaction to their state, which looks fine to me but has had other dentists practically fainting. At Essential Dental, the dentist just nodded indifferently at my molars and went ahead with the job. No judgment whatsoever. Unbelievable. He didn't even accuse me of not flossing enough, or tell me the way I'm brushing my teeth is wrong. I'm still stunned. Get your teeth done here. I hate having to go to the dentist - the drill is surely intended as a torture instrument (the film Marathon Man proves this). But if you gotta go, go here.

I'm going to conform to mass thinking here and say I hate the dentist. HATE. About three years ago…read moreI had a dreadful experience where I was told my teeth were enormous, after which the dentist started an onslaught of unusually brutal needle pricks into my mouth and gums. I walked away from that fairly traumatised to say the least. So when I got toothache earlier this month I was simply cringing at the thought of letting another one of those devils brandish their needle swords within my mouth. I have a very negative relationship with drills of any sort as a result. Thank goodness my mum was on the ball. She recommended her Dentist, Everton Hills Dental Clinic and now I'm never looking back! Their chief Dentist, Tina, is warm and humorous and really took the edge off my steely demeanour when I first walked in. And they TELL you what's going on. Tina is very open about why she's doing exactly what she's doing and made sure I was up to speed with all her in-my-mouth activities. I'm a person who needs to know everything that's happening and why and she indulged me completely. I was never taken by surprise and I felt completely at ease considering I was in a dentist chair. She even obliged my childish request to have tooth mousse that was strawberry flavoured. How nice. I can safely say that I'll now only avoid the dentist like a cold rather than the plague, like before. Such nice staff in the type of positive atmosphere that I really appreciate. Everton Hills Dental Clinic is nestled amongst other shops next to the IGA at the Watergarden.

She's very keen to do cosmetic work. They did a quote for some cosmetic work and were dearer than some specialists dentists I got quotes from and they recommended a lot more than needed to be done. I wouldn't have gone through them even though they were cheaper than the place I went to as the owner is not highly trained in cosmetic dentistry. Go to a prosthodontist if you want veneers, crowns or implants, especially if you're needing a few of them. I think this is extremely important when you are working on people's teeth in a cosmetic way as the work can effect your bite pattern, tooth durability and aesthetic outcome. This practice is OK for cleans and normal dentistry but nothing fancy.

At BOH Dental, I'm more than happy for everyone there to touch my teeth. Well, not the snotty-nosed kid next to me in the waiting room, or the reception staff...OK, anybody with dental qualifications; just so we're clear. So I had a delightful experience visiting this clinic for the first time - the reception staff were friendly and guided me through the obligatory paperwork prior to my appointment. The appointment actually began on time (rare for a dental surgery) and I was ushered into a spacious room, complete with sweeping views across the city. It felt more like a setting for a restaurant, rather than a dentist's (added bonus for those terrified of dentists). My dentist was absolutely lovely, he gave me tips on flossing techniques and we became caught up in a discussion over the benefits of adding fluoride to Brisbane's water supplies. Upon completion of my appointment, he walked me up to the reception desk and said he'd offer me a 20% discount because he was so impressed with my teeth. I'm definitely looking forward to my next check-up in one year!

I've been here a handful of times in between hating and trying to find other dentists. In case I haven't made it abundantly clear in my past dentist reviews, I hate them. The very thought of stepping inside a dental surgery (even if it's just for a standard clean) makes me quake in my boots. They simply horrify me. Who likes using ridiculously shaped utensils to poke about in someone's mouth? Anyway, let's put my bias aside for a moment. Mitchelton Dental didn't do much to assuage my fears. It's not their fault; I'm a pretty bad patient in a dental chair. And during my last visit I had to have a bit of a painful procedure, so I can't shift all of the blame onto them, because the dentist I had was really quite lovely to me. She just didn't tell me what the hell she was doing in my mouth as tears were rolling down the side of my face. If I'm going to suffer through someone poking and prodding and grinding small machines around in my mouth, I'd like to be kept informed, that's all I'm saying. More basic procedures and cleans aren't dreadful here at all and they actually do a good job, leaving an exceptional finished product (according to my new dentist). I'm just a massive chicken and like to be molly-coddled while I sit in a dental chair. They do bulk bill here too, by the way. Hopefully I haven't scared you off. The reception staff and dentists I've had here have all been very friendly and accommodating, so I'll definitely recommend them; they just weren't a good fit for me. But like I said, I'm a ridiculously shaky scaredy-cat.

They put this contraption in your mouth which looks super scary, but actually stops all the yuckiness of a filling going into your mouth and just sits in this rubber thing instead. They are all super lovely and it is a really nice environment.... as far as a dentist goes.
