The one star is definitely deserved and it goes to the ambiance which is beautiful comfortable and inviting. Unfortunately the ambiance is the only redeeming quality we found. One of the specials was a smoked salmon and dill dip I asked if it was served hot or cold and was told hot so I said we'd take it. Somehow we were served the spinach and artichoke dip; it was flavorless and piping hot but also cold in some spots as was the rest of the food. My fiancé ordered the porter house pork chop with the mashed potatoes and sauerkraut and it came with a salad. I ordered the Trust me which is all chefs choice. I told the waitress I was allergic to parsnips since I knew that was a vegetable option but didn't give any other parameters for my meal. My fiancés pork-chop was overcooked and dry the barbecue sauce was the only thing on our table the whole meal that had flavor. The chef prepared for me a sword fish over couscous in a béarnaise sauce. The first few bites of the fish were way over cooked and dry the last few bites were moist and cooked well the couscous was both crunchy (undercooked) as well as mushy (overcooked) neither the fish nor the couscous had any flavor which was very disappointing. Along with the fish was a petite sirloin which was very tough and dry and lacked any flavor; there was chimichuri sauce on the steak that definitely wasn't made correctly it was sweet and didn't taste at all like parsley. Under the steak was roasted broccoli and cauliflower which was also somehow overcooked but not cooked enough which seemed to be the theme of the evening. When the waitress asked how everything was I said fine because honestly I was so over it and had eaten a decent amount already since I was so hungry. Needless to say we won't be back. read more

It's a very high priced meal for a one hour meal. One and a half hours max - even when you let the server know you would like to take some time because it is a special occasion. Wow - what a hidden gem! We met some friends here for dinner as it was a half way point between houses, and the menu looked great. We had no idea what we were getting into, especially driving off the highway into a rural ish area, but we were blown away! The ambiance is very welcoming, with a lodge type feel, and had it not been evening in November (i.e., very dark) the view of the lake would probably have been great! Drinks were on point and came out very quickly, and the service was excellent. We started with the candied bacon and the meatballs for apps and both were just delicious- the bacon was super thick cut and cooked perfectly! ALCOHOL CATERING REVIEW: The bartender from Spanky's was friendly, professional, and kept drinks flowing efficiently throughout our wedding. They created a welcoming atmosphere for our guests. Our signature drinks--beer for him and mojitos for me--were done perfectly, and we received many compliments on them. As a note, the venue requires Spanky's for all alcohol services, so they are affiliated. There was a hiccup with our honeymoon fund jar and bar tips. We had pre-ordered drinks through Spanky's, and the required gratuity was over $500 before any services were provided. We would have preferred the opportunity to tip based on service. We also weren't aware that tip jars would be out for the liquor items (venue responsibility, not the bar's), and the jar wasn't labeled to indicate what had already been pre-tipped. On the wedding day, the bar staff ended up moving our honeymoon fund jar off the bar, and unfortunately, it did not receive any contributions. Overall, the bartenders were professional and pleasant, and after messaging with the owner, we learned the situation was unintentional. Spanky's resolved the issue promptly, and the owner was a pleasure to work with, taking steps to improve the process for future couples. read more

We had a 5pm reservation and there was hardly anyone there at first. I thought being a weekday and still March the place would not have much business. Within an hour or so it was hopping and every table was full. The bar is fantastically stocked. Very nice wine cellar. We ordered wine and not cocktails. We had several appetizers including walleye fingers and fried shrimp with remoulade. Loved the breading on both. Delicate. Not too greasy but crisp and held together. The shrimp and remoulade were my favorite. The beer cheese soup is something I could eat again and again. I ordered the petit filet and lobster tail. Both I enjoyed. The filet came a little more well done than I like but it's not easy to get a small cut done perfectly. I was pretty happy. The cheesy hash browns I got in the side were delicious. For desert it was house made berry ice cream that was so good. I love that they seem to put a lot of care into their food and the presentation. The restaurant interior is really beautiful with lots of woodwork. Makes for an extremely pleasant setting. Our service was pretty top notch. Very little that one could be unhappy about. Every element of service was top notch. -Now to things many do not watch, the bus persons moved every item quietly never touching the top of the spice shakers, the table was wiped with a clean towel in the straight overlapping row manner and not the crazy 8 whoosh wipe where sections of the table never get sanitized, the sitting areas were wiped clean at every table. You could call this precision in covid cleaning but it is evident that cleanliness has always been and still is a premier element in the front of the house and in the back of the house. The bar tender never touched the rims of any glass followed every sanitary practice I have learned owning restaurants and typically I find minor faults. SIMPLY THE BEST. Every year we drive back to Minnesota from Chicago and a family dinner at Spanky's is always a highlight of the trip. The food is insanely good, the atmosphere is casual but upscale, and the service is top-notch. We had walleye, ribs, lobster, chicken, and scallops, between the 8 of us. Every meal was fantastic. As were the salads and beer cheese soup we had as starters. My two daughters, notoriously tough food critics, both RAVED about the dinner, with one calling it "a perfect meal" and the other rating it a "10/10." The best food we had during our week long MN vacation was at Spanky's. This place deserves a 5 star rating for both the food and the service. We went there with a party of 15 and had a drink on the outdoor deck with a view of Rose Lake before being seated at two tables side by side. Drinks came out continuously while we ordered appetizers and waited for entrees. Appetizers did not disappoint- our table ordered spinach artichoke dip, walleye and crab cakes. My husband and I ordered artichoke dip, which we order at a lot of places. This dip was top notch- creamy and full of spinach and artichoke hearts, but not so rich you can't eat more than two bites. The walleye was lightly breaded and oh so fresh! We had caught some walleye and grilled it earlier in the day at Ottertail Lake and I was surprised to find the Spanky's walleye equivalently tasty. I didn't try the crab cakes but there were no leftovers! I ordered the "Trust Me," which for $36 the chef decides what to send out. Two of us ordered it at our table and one of the others at the second table. Two different variations of "Trust Me," came out, one with a Caesar beet salad and one with a strawberry walnut salad. I received a beef flank steak and the other entree was sea bass. We went halfsies on the main entree and traded salads. I also got to try my husbands prime rib and someone else's filet mignon. Every bite prepared perfectly and delicious. We noticed that if you ordered the sea bass or the steak minus the "Trust Me," the portions were bigger, so if you can decide what you want on this robust menu- it's worth it! Our table got three desserts: Heath bar cheesecake, turtle cheesecake and peanut butter mousse cake (which looked and tasted like a fluffy cheesecake). High quality cheesecake for sure, decked out with the toppings of your choice, but the signature dessert was the peanut butter mousse cake with chocolate crust and drizzle. read more

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday. The people we were staying with said to make sure and make reservations. This being a Tuesday night, I didn't think it was necessary but I was glad I did. Our reservations were at 7 PM and it was packed. We were seated shortly after our reservation time. They made sure my table was accessible for my wheelchair which was nice. We were seated close to the windows facing the lake. What a view. We started off with an order of Mussels for our appetizer. They were great. And there was a lot of them. For my main course I ordered the half rack of ribs with hashbrowns. The ribs were fall off the bone good. I could only eat about half of them. They didn't have a lot of sauce which I like. You could taste the meat and the tenderness. The hashbrowns were golden crisp on top and buttery soft underneath. Delicious. I also had their soup of the day which was Pork Vegetable Noodle. Great combinations of flavors in the soup. My girlfriend started off with the Seafood Pasta Salad. She gave me a bite or two. I would definitely get that. For her main course she went with the Stone Hearth Steak. This steak was amazing. The steak was so tender and the gorgonzola spinach portabella sauce was a perfect match. She also chose the garlic sauerkraut mashed potatoes for her side. Everything we ordered was top-notch. We will definitely be back when we can. The interior with all of the woodwork and mounts are impressive. The exterior with the view is perfect. All of the staff was all you could ask for. Asked for garlic mashed potatoes and the seasonal vegetable (which turned out to be asparagus) to accompany the four dinners. Got 3 tablespoons of mashed potatoes and 9 spears of asparagus. Called the restaurant to complain and was put on hold and then asked to leave a message. Dining in is great there. We won't order takeout again. read more

I trend old school and when you find a restaurant/ bar that knows how to make rock solid Manhattans, Old Fashions and especially Negronis you know you've found something. I've reviewed Spanky's before but it's worth saying that this place is one of the BEST restaurants in Minnesota. I kid you not. Get the Trust Me selection on the menu and prepare to be dazzled. Jared was our waitperson and if you get his table you are in great hands. Impeccable timing, knowledge of the menu and engaging personality make him grade AAA.
