I came here to celebrate my aunt turning 80, and she treated us. $52 Halibut entree it is then. We had a 5 pm reservation and they turned tables quickly and needed our huge table for the 7 pm group. I ordered beet caesar salad and Halibut with augratin potatoes. The potatoes were similar to what I've made. The service was real good and they worked well as a team. My husband and I finished the carrot cake which was great without raisins. This place is more hoity toity and upscale with upscale prices. They were busy on a Sunday night. I'll be back for special occasions. read more

The one star is definitely deserved and it goes to the ambiance which is beautiful comfortable and inviting. Unfortunately the ambiance is the only redeeming quality we found. One of the specials was a smoked salmon and dill dip I asked if it was served hot or cold and was told hot so I said we'd take it. Somehow we were served the spinach and artichoke dip; it was flavorless and piping hot but also cold in some spots as was the rest of the food. My fiancé ordered the porter house pork chop with the mashed potatoes and sauerkraut and it came with a salad. I ordered the Trust me which is all chefs choice. I told the waitress I was allergic to parsnips since I knew that was a vegetable option but didn't give any other parameters for my meal. My fiancés pork-chop was overcooked and dry the barbecue sauce was the only thing on our table the whole meal that had flavor. The chef prepared for me a sword fish over couscous in a béarnaise sauce. The first few bites of the fish were way over cooked and dry the last few bites were moist and cooked well the couscous was both crunchy (undercooked) as well as mushy (overcooked) neither the fish nor the couscous had any flavor which was very disappointing. Along with the fish was a petite sirloin which was very tough and dry and lacked any flavor; there was chimichuri sauce on the steak that definitely wasn't made correctly it was sweet and didn't taste at all like parsley. Under the steak was roasted broccoli and cauliflower which was also somehow overcooked but not cooked enough which seemed to be the theme of the evening. When the waitress asked how everything was I said fine because honestly I was so over it and had eaten a decent amount already since I was so hungry. Needless to say we won't be back. read more

The walleye was delicious! Our waiter was very attentive and we enjoyed looking out on the lake while eating dinner with our friends in the beautiful log restaurant. We would love to go back! read more

What an amazing restaurant. We needed a special place to celebrate a birthday and, wow! The food, the atmosphere, the service (thank you Amanda!) made this occasion the best. I can't wait to come back and try more, but for this evening, we started with the onion rings and followed up with each of the steak offerings plus the pork chop and walleye. Sadly too full to try the desert offerings or any wine pairings, but will be back. read more

We went here on a whim because the place we wanted to go to was closed. It was an amazing choice! The food was so good! The seafood was fresh and the steaks were cooked perfectly and so tender. The atmosphere was lovely, although it was very full. Our server was delightful and attentive without being annoying. My only qualm were the prices- definitely more expensive, but also worth it! read more

Great location, excellent service and great food! Restaurant is beautiful. Reservations got us a window table so we were able to enjoy the lake view! read more

Food is great. Service is great. Ambiance is wonderful. In the past two years, it seems as though they want to hustle you out of there as quickly as possible (without you noticing). It's a very high priced meal for a one hour meal. One and a half hours max - even when you let the server know you would like to take some time because it is a special occasion. I remember when this did not happen. I remember when you were encouraged to enjoy yourself and relax. Not so the last couple of years. read more

Wow - what a hidden gem! We met some friends here for dinner as it was a half way point between houses, and the menu looked great. We had no idea what we were getting into, especially driving off the highway into a rural ish area, but we were blown away! The ambiance is very welcoming, with a lodge type feel, and had it not been evening in November (i.e., very dark) the view of the lake would probably have been great! Drinks were on point and came out very quickly, and the service was excellent. We started with the candied bacon and the meatballs for apps and both were just delicious- the bacon was super thick cut and cooked perfectly! We were all impressed with our meals and look forward going back! read more

Love the atmosphere. The food is delicious and well-presented no matter what you chose. It's the place we go for a special meal.

ALCOHOL CATERING REVIEW: The bartender from Spanky's was friendly, professional, and kept drinks flowing efficiently throughout our wedding. They created a welcoming atmosphere for our guests. Our signature drinks--beer for him and mojitos for me--were done perfectly, and we received many compliments on them. As a note, the venue requires Spanky's for all alcohol services, so they are affiliated. There was a hiccup with our honeymoon fund jar and bar tips. We had pre-ordered drinks through Spanky's, and the required gratuity was over $500 before any services were provided. We would have preferred the opportunity to tip based on service. We also weren't aware that tip jars would be out for the liquor items (venue responsibility, not the bar's), and the jar wasn't labeled to indicate what had already been pre-tipped. On the wedding day, the bar staff ended up moving our honeymoon fund jar off the bar, and unfortunately, it did not receive any contributions. Overall, the bartenders were professional and pleasant, and after messaging with the owner, we learned the situation was unintentional. Spanky's resolved the issue promptly, and the owner was a pleasure to work with, taking steps to improve the process for future couples. read more

Spankys is a beautiful place and our server Amanda was great I ordered a full rack of ribs and augratin potatoes ( they were good) and that's what I got, a giant rack of ribs! For the price though they were nothing special. read more

If you are looking for a special dinner this is the place. If you are looking for a casual night out with the best burger around this is also the place. 6 of us had a pre-holiday meal, drinks and dessert. Our meals included, chicken, pork, shrimp, walleye and filet. The food was delicious, particularly the steak which was medium to perfection. I'm a first timer here, went with great friends who are from the area. The food was awesome! Prime rib, Chilean SeaBass, ribs! The service was as good if not better! We had left and one of our party left their food, and now if this isn't an indication of a great place; an employee heard where we were going afterwards and brought us our food that we left! I will be back and highly suggest this a place to go for a great experience! read more

Absolutely impeccable in pretty much everything. What a beautiful setting and great place to go for a special occasion any time of the year. We had a 5pm reservation and there was hardly anyone there at first. I thought being a weekday and still March the place would not have much business. Within an hour or so it was hopping and every table was full. The bar is fantastically stocked. Very nice wine cellar. We ordered wine and not cocktails. We had several appetizers including walleye fingers and fried shrimp with remoulade. Loved the breading on both. Delicate. Not too greasy but crisp and held together. The shrimp and remoulade were my favorite. The beer cheese soup is something I could eat again and again. I ordered the petit filet and lobster tail. Both I enjoyed. The filet came a little more well done than I like but it's not easy to get a small cut done perfectly. I was pretty happy. The cheesy hash browns I got in the side were delicious. For desert it was house made berry ice cream that was so good. I love that they seem to put a lot of care into their food and the presentation. The restaurant interior is really beautiful with lots of woodwork. Makes for an extremely pleasant setting. Our service was pretty top notch. Very little that one could be unhappy about. This is central Minnesota I don't expect Minneapolis or Chicago or New York quality stuff. Nevertheless for what it is it is great and worth a drive and a return visit. read more

We went to Spanky's for our 25th anniversary, had high expectations, we were not impressed, restaurant was a little busy so service was ok. Prime rib was average. Dinner salad was good, baked potato I could tell was in the warmer way too long, not good. Desert must've been from a box, not home cooked. Way overpriced for what you get. read more

Prices are too high... We enjoyed the ambiance, view, and service. Food wasn't anything special. The price on the halibut was extreme! $39 It came out with a thick coating of sauce. That expensive cut of fish should be carefully seasoned, not covered up like a fried shrimp. Just my thoughts... The "Trust Me" chef surprise dish ended up being the best one on the table. read more

Spankys has been a family dinner destination for YEARS. This place has never disappointed! We're steak lovers and every cut is always A+. Ribs are amazing, and what a pleasant surprise the "trust me" dinners are too! Desserts are delicious. Drink menu expansive. Staff is always pleasant and attentive. Fire place, piano and ambiance is second to NONE! We often drive through from Sioux City and have also made the trip down while staying in Bemidji, why? Because it is JUST THAT GOOD! DON'T EVEN WONDER if it's going to be good, it's much better than good! Thank you Josh and the whole team, you make every stop WORTH THE DRIVE! read more

Best in Class! The food was exceptional. -Come for the great food, Be amazed by the detail taken to provide a perfect dining experience. -4 women each with special requests and each meal was prepared to perfection. Every element of service was top notch. -Now to things many do not watch, the bus persons moved every item quietly never touching the top of the spice shakers, the table was wiped with a clean towel in the straight overlapping row manner and not the crazy 8 whoosh wipe where sections of the table never get sanitized, the sitting areas were wiped clean at every table. You could call this precision in covid cleaning but it is evident that cleanliness has always been and still is a premier element in the front of the house and in the back of the house. The bar tender never touched the rims of any glass followed every sanitary practice I have learned owning restaurants and typically I find minor faults. Plenty of pictures of Spanky's food but, how do I take picture of the sanitizing practices that are beyond reproach??? read more

SIMPLY THE BEST. Every year we drive back to Minnesota from Chicago and a family dinner at Spanky's is always a highlight of the trip. The food is insanely good, the atmosphere is casual but upscale, and the service is top-notch. We had walleye, ribs, lobster, chicken, and scallops, between the 8 of us. Every meal was fantastic. As were the salads and beer cheese soup we had as starters. My two daughters, notoriously tough food critics, both RAVED about the dinner, with one calling it "a perfect meal" and the other rating it a "10/10." If you have not had a chance to eat at Spanky's Stone Hearth, make a reservation today. You will not be disappointed. We can't wait to come back next summer again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more

The best food we had during our week long MN vacation was at Spanky's. This place deserves a 5 star rating for both the food and the service. We went there with a party of 15 and had a drink on the outdoor deck with a view of Rose Lake before being seated at two tables side by side. Drinks came out continuously while we ordered appetizers and waited for entrees. Appetizers did not disappoint- our table ordered spinach artichoke dip, walleye and crab cakes. My husband and I ordered artichoke dip, which we order at a lot of places. This dip was top notch- creamy and full of spinach and artichoke hearts, but not so rich you can't eat more than two bites. The walleye was lightly breaded and oh so fresh! We had caught some walleye and grilled it earlier in the day at Ottertail Lake and I was surprised to find the Spanky's walleye equivalently tasty. I didn't try the crab cakes but there were no leftovers! I ordered the "Trust Me," which for $36 the chef decides what to send out. Two of us ordered it at our table and one of the others at the second table. Two different variations of "Trust Me," came out, one with a Caesar beet salad and one with a strawberry walnut salad. I received a beef flank steak and the other entree was sea bass. We went halfsies on the main entree and traded salads. I also got to try my husbands prime rib and someone else's filet mignon. Every bite prepared perfectly and delicious. We noticed that if you ordered the sea bass or the steak minus the "Trust Me," the portions were bigger, so if you can decide what you want on this robust menu- it's worth it! Our table got three desserts: Heath bar cheesecake, turtle cheesecake and peanut butter mousse cake (which looked and tasted like a fluffy cheesecake). High quality cheesecake for sure, decked out with the toppings of your choice, but the signature dessert was the peanut butter mousse cake with chocolate crust and drizzle. read more

My wife, daughter & I visited Spank's on 6-10-23. Were there for my birthday. The food & service was outstanding. Beautiful view overlooking Lake Rose. Wonderful place for a special occasion or just a long week. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was delicious.

Come one, come all! WOWZA did I enjoy my dinner at this restaurant. The wine list is something you'd find at the "foodiest" restaurants in SF and LA. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned exactly right. The sides were mouth watering. The owner and bartender were a joy. I had such a great time that I planned a return trip to Detroit Lakes from Los Angeles in February, and I'm bringing a group from LA with new. Did I mention it will be freeeeeezing cold there? Like, the lakes will be frozen over solid! That's a big deal for this CA girl! read more

Overpriced and overrated. I'd heard a lot of good things about this place but after my experience I'm just not impressed. Our waiter was snobby and our steaks were cooked wrong. I feel like this place is expensive just for the sake of being expensive, but for the price they're asking I expect actual quality and a bit more class. read more
