Southside Park is an urban park in the Brickell section of Miami. It is only steps from the…read moreMetrorail. The fenced in park has benches, bike racks, picnic tables, open area for play and a playground. In 2019 the basketball court was redone with art from D'ana of COVL. Southside Park is primarily used by neighborhood residents to shoot hoops, walk their dogs, or as somewhere to take the kids to play. I really like the large old ficus trees which I am sure have seen their share of Miami history as has the 1905 original Miami High School building which was relocated to the park and restored. As far as parks go though it could definitely use more amenities to benefit the community. Fortunately Southside Park is slated to get a design overhaul by the same firm that designed New York's Highline and which is currently creating the linear Underline Park under the nearby Metrorail. Plans for the improved Southside Park include an enclosed dog run with dedicated areas for small and large dogs, seating areas, water features, public art, playgrounds for different age groups, a new basketball court, space for community programs, and new plants and trees. There are also plans to build the 64-story 1 South Park tower next door to the park. Based on how well the Underline is turning out, I predict good things are in store for Southside Park.

It's a short walk from anywhere in Brickell. There is a convenience store across the street and several other places to grab food, drinks or snacks on your way there as well. I'm sorry to say that it looks more like a park under construction to me. It is completely fenced, which is a good sign. I did find a small sign on some foliage near the front gate that had a small white sign that showed this area was dedicated as a dog park on March 14, 2020, by NBV mayor and his team. The gate has a chain across it to block entrance and says Authorized Personnel Only. So, I am confused about whether the public could use this park yet or not. It looks like there are two separate areas for your dog - one for smaller breeds and another for larger breeds. The weight limit for small is under 30 lbs, and for large, they have to be over 30 lbs. I hope NBV enhances this dog park soon. It is a very good location, and you can see the NBV Welcome mural. The parking area has orange cones in each spot so that you can not park there. So, at this point, I am confused about using this park.

I'm always looking for new places to walk, exercise, and explore, and this spacious 9.29 acre park turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. The highlight of Bird Lakes Park has to be its brand-new nature themed playground, which opened in September 2025. Following extensive renovations, the playground now features a scenic stone mound, climbing logs, seat boulders, a birdhouse, and interactive environmental learning stations. These interactive elements encourage exploration, climbing, imaginative play, and a connection to nature. The rest of the park offers plenty of recreational amenities, including a lighted basketball court, a baseball field, a recreation center, a picnic shelter, and a paved walking path. I was also surprised to find a teqball table. The sport is played on a curved table that resembles a table tennis table and combines elements of soccer and table tennis. Teqball was invented in 2014 by Hungarians Gábor Borsányi and Viktor Huszár after Borsányi suffered a soccer injury and wanted to create a less aggressive way to enjoy the sport. Today, many professional soccer players use teqball as a supplemental training tool, and it has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. In less than a decade, more than 100 countries have established their own teqball associations. During my walk through the park, I spotted numerous mother ducks accompanied by their adorable ducklings. It was wonderful to see that even with all the recreational facilities, there is still plenty of room for wildlife. It's nice to know that the birds have a place at Bird Lakes Park, too.

There is the playground that has some screens overhead to provide a little shade in the play area. There are some covered tables and chairs, so you can have some snacks or lunch. There is also a big field where you can run around and kick a soccer ball, etc. It is generally pretty clean, not too crowded, and there is plenty of parking. It is conveniently located, so we often will go there just before dinner to burn off some extra energy. There is also enough parking, too.

Sometimes I go and grass is freshly cut and over all seemed well maintained. Other times (a little over half of the times), it looks looks a forest and poorly kept. It's a shame it's not kept up with as much because it is a convenient park to just go with the little ones if you have any or simply for a small walk.

In 2021 a new playground was added to the park. The playground was built in direct cooperation with the manufacturer and the community so they could save money by not having to hire an architect. The park was designed with community input and includes swings and slides, colorful jungle gyms, a mini rock climbing wall, and a water misting station to cool down. For bigger kids, there is a pavilion and tennis and basketball courts. There is also a covered pavilion, walking path,, and picnic tables. The biggest drawback to this park is lack of parking. The park was filled with people when I visited but with not enough parking it seems like the city wants it only to be used by neighborhood residents. The city did a great job on Jaycee Park and it seems a shame that people who would have to drive over can't use it.

My wife and I actually found this zen compound by accident. We drove to the back of Volunteer Park to grab a book from the Little Free Library but sadly it was temporarily removed for repair. So instead we found Camp Everglades where we played like wild teenagers for a while. No doubt that this will be the hangout for my future grandkids during our babysitting weekends. Just take a peek at the pics and you will agree that it was an amazing place to relax, have lunch under a pavilion or play with your kiddies.

First noticed the cool entrance and everything was so clean. My hubby and I walked around the park and sat at the covered gazebo. I guess the park is set up for kids with a few jungle gyms but none were here today and had the area to ourselves. Actually my experience was wonderful here.
