I just finished four weeks at the Spanish Immersion School in Oaxaca. Fours hours/day 5 days/week of one-on-one instruction was pretty intensive but my instructors Ruben & Deveroh were very flexible and adaptable to my needs. It was nice not being in a classroom all day long. Some days we went to the market, a museum, or a coffee shop instead of staying at the school. The school arranged a home stay that was about a mile from school, but the easy walk to school every day meant I got to see a lot more of central Oaxaca, and got to meet the family I stayed with. I would, without hesitation, recommend the Spanish Immersion School to anyone that wants an individualized, flexible Spanish language program in a lovely, friendly, culturally exciting city. read more

I attended the Spanish Immersion School in Oaxaca, Mexico for the full month of March, 2025. I could not have been more pleased with the school director Lázaro Rojas, and my several instructors, Karen Hernandez, Leida Cruz and ​Samara Juárez. All of my instructors had one or more college degrees in teaching Spanish as a second language. I attended as a beginner but they accommodate any level. Attending the Spanish Immersion School was an unforgettable life experience. I spent 2.5 weeks getting 4 hours of 1:1 tutoring from two deeply engaged teachers. I recommend really knowing what you want to work on with your teachers so they can support you in your goals. I became a pro at the subjunctive working alongside the wise teaching of Estefanía. José Ernesto helped me learn about Oaxacan culture and history and helped me become a much better conversationalist. Lázaro, the Director of the school, is friendly and very helpful. It is a comfortable and welcoming environment to learn in. The other students were warm and so much fun to spend time with. I also stayed with a host mama, Martha, who is one of the kindest humans I've ever met. Fantastic experience, not to be missed. Our teachers were absolutely delightful and so well skilled. My husband and I took the class together for the week and learned so much, laughed so much, and got quite a leg up on speaking during our month in Oaxaca. Our maestra Esteffania, who I personally came to adore, was an especially talented teacher and wonderful human being. The environment at the school was very comfortable, welcoming and relaxed as well. I'm planning on returning to both Oaxaca and this school in the future. We spent a week taking lessons in Oaxaca with the teachers at Spanish Immersion School. It's well worth the money! Lazaro was incredibly welcoming and responsive, always checking in to make sure we were having a good experience. I worked with Jesus for a week, and appreciated his calm and patient teaching style. We walked around Oaxaca so I could learn more about the amazing city, and spent the rest of our time focusing on my job-specific learning and areas of grammar that I needed practice with. D and I also enjoyed going on the excursion with the school - we got to go to Jesus' hometown to see their Guelaguetza festival. It was a really great experience. He taught us about his town, the church, and the different dances that were performed. The instruction model is really fabulous. I think it benefits both the students and the teachers with the mobile location, especially since learning Spanish isn't just about the language, there are cultural elements as well. The one-on-one instruction was key; D and I are at different levels and we appreciated being able to learn separately and focus on what we needed. We both noticed a significant difference in our abilities and confidence by the end of the week. Highly recommended! read more

I'd definitely come here again if in Oaxaca. It was 1:1 learning with good and friendly teachers and we met outside of the school. Much more enjoyable. Although I have a regular teacher of Spanish in Oaxaca (lessons over the internet), he's busy during the mornings when I wanted to have classes. Since Spanish Immersion School had such excellent reviews on tripadvisor and it was 1:1, I thought I would try it. The idea of groups classes, which I've done before in Oaxaca, doesn't appeal to me. My teacher said he didn't know the school personally but that he had heard good things about it. I signed up for 4 hours/day. 2 hours with Nohemí from 9-11, a half hour break and then 2 hrs with Luis, 11:30-1:30. Both instructors were very good and very friendly. It was enjoyable working with them. I wanted to concentrate specifically on my pronunciation. Each had a different approach, which was good. I mean, I'll always sound like a gringo, especially as I'm from the NYC area (!!), but I'd like to sound a little less like one! They were both out front in saying that a week would really only get me started, which I knew to be true. We met in various cafes except one day when Luis asked if I wanted to see the mercado de animales in the small town of Cuilápan about a half hour outside of Oaxaca. There were all types of animals for sale, as well as some food and drink stands. It was very down home and gave a teeny bit of insight into the definitely non-tourist side of Mexico. I doubt this market makes it into any guidebooks (but I'm not going to look). In fact, neither the host of the house I was staying in nor my regular teacher had heard of it. While there I bought a little potted chili plant as a gift for my hosts. It was incredibly cheap. As I'm interested in non-tourist side, this presented a real opportunity. 1:1 learning with good and friendly teachers in the pleasant cafe environment, a trip out of town, at reasonable cost... Where do I begin! Lázaro, The owner of this school, THANK YOU!! To all of the teachers and my personal teachers, Jacob & Luis---THANK YOU!! Lázaro went above and beyond for me and I've watched him do this with ALL of the students. He started off by finding me an affordable, clean, & secure apartment near the school and then picked me up from the airport early in the morning. Lázaro was always available to help me out with anything! On my first day I was walking around the city, got completely lost on my own, and he came and picked me up! He always had social functions available for us students and cultural events planned. I was studying Spanish at his school for a full month, and felt like I was treated like a queen:) I always felt taken care, included, and also always had as much time on my own to explore as I wanted. Everyone who works at the school feels like a cozy, warm, HOME. My instructors, Jacob and Luis---BRILLIANT teachers!!! I had 1:1 instruction from both of them 5 hours day/5 days week for a month. They both are extremely intelligent, patient, catered every class to my specific needs, understood my own way of learning and adapted my lessons to how I learn best, and made each class deeply personal, connective, enjoyable, and FUN. I honestly was blown away by how much I have learned in a short amount of time. Learning Spanish in the past, was not the easiest experience for me but I felt instantly safe, secure, and comfortable with Jacob and Luis, which allowed for me to learn an enormous amount during my month there. I had taken Spanish classes before but so much finally began making sense for me with my teachers. Also, there were also excursions and cultural experiences (optional if you wanted to participate) that the school created to be deeper immersed in the culture, the Spanish language, lifestyle, and develop stronger bonds with everyone; whether it was going to Mt Albán, Oaxacan cooking class, Day of the Dead experiences, dinners, music/dancing, laughing! Since returning back to the US, I am still continuing my Spanish classes via skype and will continue to for some time so I can continue on my Spanish learning journey. I'm returning back to Oaxaca in January and look forward to seeing everyone in person again. Not only did I receive the best of instructors in learning Spanish, I've also developed profound connections and friendships. I feel like I'm part of a special family. Taking Spanish classes in this school was a very positive experience. Lázaro is very welcoming. Both of my teachers, Marcos and Estefania, were excellent, patient, engaging, and knowledgeable. Absolutely outstanding! Prior to moving into the school lodging, I stayed at two local hotel. The lodging provided by the school was far superior to either of the local hotels. It was clean, safe, and beautiful plus, the cost was very reasonable. The owner of the school lodging is an excellent cook and an excellent resource for questions or problems. It was a wonderful immersion experience. I enjoyed my morning and afternoon Spanish lessons and the camaraderie with the other quests from all over the whole was great. I have been to Oaxaca 4 times and attended Spanish Immersion School classes. All of the praises that people say about the teachers and the program are true. I am currently planning my next trip. I am learning a lot of Spanish and have made several close friends in the process. I have traveled with others who feel the same and have also gone alone and have always felt safe and well cared for. My husband and I just completed three weeks of study at this school. It was my second visit - I visited solo in Feb 2017 as well as taking Skype lessons with the school in the interim. I enjoyed my first visit so much that I did have some fear that there was no way my second visit could measure up to the first. Especially as the school had grown substantially in between my visits. I needn't have worried. My experience during this visit was even more intense and I'm sure as a result my Spanish has improved that much more this time. Now that I am back home, I need to restrain myself from talking Spanish as it seemed to bubble up so naturally in my mind. The secret of this school is not just its model of one on one instruction or his educated and experienced teachers but Lazaro's ability to match his teachers up to his students and the conversational abilities of his teachers. I'm starting to think there is no subject that at least one of his teachers can't converse intelligently on. Almost all of the students I spoke with were convinced that they had the "best" teacher. (Of course they are wrong as I had the best teachers!). Lazaro's teachers can get almost anyone speaking. Including my husband, a beginner, who suddenly seemed more talkative in Spanish than he usually is in English. It seems that when there is something interesting to talk about and a supportive atmosphere that students forget that they can't "speak Spanish". I know my ability to speak Spanish has greatly improved since my first visit here but I have been studying Spanish for so long sometimes I don't notice the improvement. But it was so evident to me when looking at the beginners. For example, when I first met one of the beginners she couldn't converse with me in Spanish. I could tell she could more or less understand what I was saying - she just seemed incapable of forming a response that consisted of more than one word. Two weeks later, I was in the car with her for a ride of about 90 minutes during which we conversed in Spanish the whole time. I think she asked the meaning of no more than about four words. Then over the weekend she was telling me some things about the Spanish language that I don't remember learning myself! So for a second time, this school has my unqualified recommendation as one of the best places in the world to learn Spanish. And Oaxaca with its culture, history and friendly inhabitants has to be the best city to learn Spanish in. This was my fifth time doing Spanish immersion in Mexico and the first time my husband has accompanied me. He had never had any interest before in coming with me. But he had so much fun this time he is also motivated to continue his Spanish studies and return here in future. I'm looking forward to more visits in future. read more
