We spent a month taking Spanish classes at amigos Del Sol, and I cannot recommend the school more highly. What I think sets the school apart from others is the warmth and dedication of the instructors and the flexibility they exhibit in working with different people. We are a family with kids ages 10 and 12. Rogelio, the director and head instructor, had no hesitation in establishing a program for two adults and two kids, 3 hours/day, 5 days/week. (The kids had one teacher, while we had another--the kids worked with Miriam and Rogelio while we worked with Esteban and Rogelio, but I think all of the teachers are excellent.) Had we asked for a different schedule, he would have accommodated us. Indeed, when my husband decided he could use some instruction without me, Rogelio made it happen, providing private instruction for both of us. Rogelio and all of the teachers are so friendly, we really looked forward to seeing them each day.
The emphasis of the school is conversation. You are talking from day one--don't expect to do much in the way of rote grammar memorization while on class. It can be a bit overwhelming, but ultimately one of the hardest parts of learning a new language is getting the courage to actually talk and Amigos is a great place to get over that hurdle.
The school is a bit out of El Cento in a quiet neighborhood, but Rogelio picks up and drops off students each day in El Centro.
We also decided to do a home stay arranged by the school. We stayed with Laura and Sergio whose house is a few minutes walk from Amigos Del Sol. We were a bit nervous at first, especially the kids, but Laura and Sergio were wonderful hosts, patient with our stumbling Spanish and welcoming. Laura is also really good cook--we ate two meals per day at their house--so that was a highlight of our stay. We originally committed to staying one week, but ended up staying almost two. They have a separate apartment for visitors but because we were four people needing two rooms, we stayed in the main house, in the guest room and in their daughters' room. We had our own bathroom and although it was close quarters, we were very comfortable. I highly recommend a home stay as part of your schooling.
