They offer free concerts from classicist musicians, such as in honor of Earth Day or Mother's Day. The Spanish mass will have special ceremonies, even marches. One criticism has to do with some loafers who hang out on the steps, the same pair always panhandling. The last two times I ignored them, and one of them hissed at me and followed me inside with a threatening stare (as if to ask who the hell I thought I was to not say hello back). I don't say hello because then they want me to give them cash. They leave from the steps after mass, but they time their visits to the church for mass times and then don't even come inside for mass. Maybe the church can put up a sign on the steps saying "No Solicitors Please."

We have seen the church go through some very wonderful times with Ministers like Rev. David Eaton and Rev. Dr. Rob Hardies and also some difficult times - especially around the departure of Rev. Dr. Susan Moore, when she left the church. Moving on from the past to today, the church is in great shape. It is very well attended, with newcomers receiving a warm welcome and often returning many more times. Overall it is well managed and well ministered, although it has often struggled with an operating deficit. In addition, as sometimes happens there is a hiccup right now due to some misallocation of funds - some funds which were raised to help with building restoration (it is well over a century old) were used instead to help close an operating deficit. This is being addressed now. The good news is that the church has set itself on a pathway to be able to "live within its means". While it very well attended, there are many attendees who put money in the plate during the service, but do not make a financial pledge. This is now an imporant topic for the church and as I write this, my hope and my prayer, is that everyone/family who attend on a regular basis will be moved to make a pledge - which is important both for the giver, as a personal committment to the church, and to the church officers, for budgeting and financial planning purposes. God Bless all who read this and all who attend the church and all who serve the church. Amen,

All Souls is an amazing place. Having the only original Revere bell in Washington makes it an even…read moremore historical place. The Revere family were rebels, and the Church has been at the forefront of rebelling against the status quo since its foundation. This particular church was founded among others, by President John Quincy Adams, John C. Calhoun and Charles Bullfinch, and it has since been a champion in liberal theology. It was a beehive for the civil rights movement. It was also a center of non-violence and a source of opposition to nuclear arms. The Church recently rededicated the Hiroshima Drawings, a thank-you gift from Hiroshima children following the Church's conveyance of relief supplies after the dropping of the Atomic Bomb. By the way, the Revere Bell, after two hundred years, still tolls on occasions, nowadays each time for the number of Americans killed in action in Iraq during the week. It was Washington's Independence Day Bell until it tolled for abolitionist John Brown's death before the Civil War, another example of the liberal ardor of its members. As to its religious orientation, it is more than a fascinating place. It has the intellectual fervor of William Ellery Channing and Thomas Jefferson personified in the figure of Rob Hardies, and the spiritual awakening of St Gregory of Nyssa in the person of Shauna Lyngood. Their sermons are a credit to both, religious fervor and humanism. As a result, both hard-core thinkers and fervent spiritualists can find a welcoming place there. Also among its firsts, the first public same sex union to be performed in the US happened in its halls. I love All Souls.

They use to live in the ghettos of Boston where there were as many funerals there as there are wedding in DC. On a side note regarding the post on Chinese New years, all the Christians I know in China and Taiwan celebrate Chinese New Years because it's a time to connect with family and friends and to share and tell them how much you love them. It's not easy being Christian in China and some of them have given up professions, suffered persecution, and are barely scrapping by, but they celebrate Chinese New Years....maybe differently from others....like with prayer and church services along with visiting family, feeding and helping the poor and witnessing to them. Chinese Christians definitely celebrate and share Christ's love during the two week national celebration!

Considering the church was erected shortly after the US became a country, I'd be hard pressed to say this wasn't in amazing condition. The older the church, the worse the ventilation. Summer time can be brutal here, even if the fans are running the crowds definitely keep the temps up. Evenings are another story in church land, barely anyone is around to disrupt the tranquil vibe. The interior is well kept, clean, and the pews aren't too hard on the knees. Whew. If you find yourself here early on a Sunday, enjoy the impressive choir and cheeky priests. Parking is limited in the area, but then again, it's DC. Park a block around the corner and make the walk to the front steps.

It's a church that pushes people toward Jesus so that congregants can be bridge builders and a witness to Washington, D.C. That's who Union City is at their core. Now for the details. 1) Service: There are two services- 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. every Sunday. Each service starts with 3-4 songs for worship with lyrics projected onto a main screen and two side TVs. Announcements are made by various members of the congregation. Sermons are around 30-45 minutes and are steeped in Scripture. The wife-husband team takes turns preaching and both are equally gifted communicators and orators. Each service ends with a reading of the Union City liturgy. (It's the liturgy- how Biblical and bridge-building- that first convinced my family to make Union City our home.) 2) Atmosphere: Union City Church is intentional about creating a welcoming space. Greeters with "welcome" signs say hi to you as you walk in and the lobby is set up with places to sit and connect with people, coffee/water/juice, and the "Connect" area for people who want to go deeper in the church. When my family and I were visiting churches, Union City was the most genuinely friendly. 2) Location: They rent space in the Showroom in downtown Washington, D.C. Although there aren't as many coffee shops and restaurants open Sundays nearby, you can always find free street parking. And it's easier to get to from all different parts of the city. Living in Southeast D.C., it takes me 12 minutes to drive. The McPherson Metro Station is two blocks away! If you're a Christian and want a church family, consider going to Union City Church.
