Baillieston Health Centre has been my local doctors since I was a wee yin…read more A lot of work has gone into this medical centre in the past few years, with a total refurb that has been kept up to scratch over the past 5 years or so. It contains several different departments, including more than one GP practice, a dentist, nurses stations, physiotherapy, and a pharmacy. There are also a number of services that travel through, including greengrocers who pitch up once a week and sell fresh produce inside the centre. The MacKinnon practice has one of the best GP appointment systems I've ever experienced, wherein you call up before 9am on the day to make an appointment for the same afternoon. In the same turn they have an open clinic until 11am every morning, so that you don't have to wait weeks to get an appointment and can pop in whenever you need. It can be a pain if you accidentally sleep past 9am and miss out on getting an appointment, but it beats waiting 4 days to get some medication for that tonsillitis or whatever is doing you in! All in all, it has been vastly improved in recent years and continues to be a good health centre for the local community.

It was refurbished slightly in 1997 when a new entrance was created and a car park facility was added in spare ground adjacent to the surgery. It is centrally located in the middle of the Baillieston area and houses a pharmacy within the building. They offer additional services such as a nurses station, money advice centre and a fruit and veg co-op to promote healthy eating. The surgery is open from Monday to Friday and has a half day on a Tuesday. They have a late surgery on Thursday evenings for non urgent appointments.

To the best of my knowledge there are no other 7 day markets in Ayrshire. They have many varied stalls including a t-shirt printing stall, mobile phones, gothic stall, wedding stall, tattooist, cobbler, fruit and veg, pets and many more! The owners of the stalls all seem to genuinely get along and this makes for a friendly and relaxed atmosphere! Something which is sadly lacking in the busy stress-filled supermarkets these days! It might be a bit rough around the edges when it comes to the decor but what it lacks in this it more than makes up for in character! I strongly advise you to visit if you haven't been in a while as you may be pleasantly surprised by what they have to offer!

Julie's Salon is great for haircuts and you don't usually have to book just turn up and wait your turn (sometimes you don't have to wait very long, it depends on the time of day). The small fruit and veg stall is perfect for fresh produce at a lower price than the main town shops. At the very end there are white net curtains for sale something which is quite difficult to find these days as they've gone out of fashion. Near the entrance you can buy picture frames and handbags. Beyond these outlets there's a large stall selling pet supplies, especially cages of all sizes; a stall selling greetings cards and several others. Definitely worth a look!

They're awesome and I've been hooked on them since I needed them to sit my driving test as I freaked out the first time round. Whether they're a placebo or not, they work for me so to avoid road rage I'll always have a spare tin in my hand bag. I was delighted to see that Boots had them on a 3 for 2 offer so decided to top up. Although this is a rather small branch of Boots it surprisingly has a lot of stock and it's very well organised too ensuring that it's customer friendly to browse. They have a good range of cosmetics including L'Oreal and Maybelline and the staff are very friendly too. The only downside was that I didn't see any meal deals so it looks like they don't stock food in this branch which is a shame, as nothing beats a Boots meal deal of an afternoon!

I hate talking about people like this but the smell that was coming from her and the attitude that i was greeted with first thing definitely made me never want to be a patient there. This is not the standard that you expect from a private hospital, needless to say i wont be back and I would not recommend it to anyone else. I haven't had any long…read morewaiting times for appointments and the all the staff that I've interacted with so have been really helpful. I had a bit of trouble getting signed up. They wanted so many forms to be filled in and a photo ID and a recent bill to prove I was who I said I was. I thought that was a bit strange - I'm sure I didn't need so much last time I signed up for a GP. I'm also not crazy about their appointment booking system: They prefer you need to either ring them at 08:30 on the day you want an appointment, rather than booking one in advance. They say this is because more people fail to show up for appointments booked in advance but to me that seems a bit presumptive. I feel like on-the-day appointments are really for emergencies. That said I've never had any trouble actually getting an appointment and once you've got one everything runs pretty smoothly. The surgery itself has plenty of comfy seating and asks visitors to avoid using mobile phones, which is fair enough. Hopefully I won't have too much cause to visit regularly but I'm confident that if I do I will be treated very well.

Let's face it, nobody wants to visit the doctors. Having had arthritis since the age of four…read morethough, I'm a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to local practices. This is the latest one, and probably one of my favourites. Obviously they look after me and provide me with all kinds of important medical care, but this place gets three things right that so many others have failed on. Firstly, making an appointment. As wonderful as the NHS is, there will always have to be concessions made in trying to provide care for everyone. I've known first hand the frustrations local practices feel in trying to provide adequate care for their patients while dealing with strict staff and budget constraints. The mark of a good surgery to me is how well the staff deal with these frustrations. The doctors, nurses and receptionists of the Buckingham Terrace Medical Practice deal with this admirably, and whilst I'm sometimes faced with delays when trying to fit an appointment around my working life, they always go the extra mile to make sure I'm seen and sorted in as quick a time as possible. Secondly, they do a great job at monitoring patients, and if I get too lax or too busy with my life, they always provide a prompt and friendly reminder that I really should go see my doctor. Knowing I'm being looked after in such a fashion is a huge weight off my mind. Finally, the website is an excellent resource, with all the information you could need about the practice and it's various clinics, and a helpful staff on hand should you have further queries. Ordering repeat prescriptions via the website is also a lovely touch in an increasingly time sensitive world.

It seems I lucked out! In a medical practice, there are a few things I look for; polite, friendly staff, ease of making appointments, availability of appointments and good one-to-one patient care. They get all of these right. With an ongoing health issue, I've been to the doctor more in the last seven months than I have in the previous ten years. So the fact that the staff are friendly and flexible, the GPs do their best to forge a relationship with their patients, it's a few minutes walk from my flat and they offer handy things like repeat prescriptions online and text reminders of appointments, Buckingham Terrace offers everything you'd want in a modern, patient-focused practice. I only have good things to say!
