Horrible place to do your road test ,even if you did everything perfectly the instructor gonna fail u for some stupid shi

iI'm extremely disappointed with how my son's road test was handled. His test was scheduled during an active snowstorm, with poor visibility and slippery road conditions. Any reasonable examiner should expect a cautious, safety-focused approach in that kind of weather. My son chose to drive more slowly than usual because the roads were icy and visibility was reduced -- exactly what responsible drivers are taught to do in winter conditions. Instead of recognizing that he was adjusting his driving to match unsafe weather, the examiner penalized him for going "too slow" and failed him. read more

I visited the South Land Registry in Calgary this morning to request an abstract record for the past five years. The staff member at the counter handed me a form, which I filled out, and then provided me with a commercial driver's abstract. I didn't notice the mistake right away and left. After finishing at the car wash, I realized I had been given the wrong document especially surprising because I hold a Class 5 licence and am not authorized to drive commercially. When I returned, I had to pay another $29.00 to receive the standard abstract I originally needed. I didn't argue or ask for a refund, but I felt the situation was handled unprofessionally, particularly because I wasn't asked to confirm what type of abstract I was requesting. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. A simple clarification at the counter could prevent this kind of inconvenience. read more

Used to do a lot of business at this location and was very happy. My wife took the road test there and was exampned by MICHELLE LOSCHUK. Her behavior was discriminatory, and we will use all options to ensure she will not be discriminatory with customers in the future. She behaved aggresivelly from the start, making agressive and unapropriated remarks during the test as well, which is not acceptable. Her role is to manage the driving test, give instructions and take notes. Her report contains lies, and also it is not readable. The customer can not use this report to improove driving, which is the purpose of such a report. As long as this examiner is still allowed to do business at the Southland Registry we will move our business totally to a different registry. read more

My daughter had her driving test booked and she had been pre-warned about Michelle. Needless to say my daughter got Michelle as her instructor that day. The appointment was from 230-330 my daughter didn't start driving till 250 as Michelle was busy doing something else and was done at 320. My daughter didn't even get the full hour that I paid for. As my daughter was driving Michelle was busy looking out the car window not paying attention to my daughter. Her report contained lies and she docked marks extremely high. Ended up taking my daughter the next day down to Shawnessy Registry and they were AMAZING her instructor was so friendly and she passed. I have been going to Southland registry for many years as they are close to my house but I don't think I'll be doing business there any more. And in the fall when my younger daughter goes for her license I'll be taking her to Shawnessy Registry. I will be telling other not to go to Southland Registry for your driving test. read more

Just called to see if I could take my knowledge test for class 7. Didn't even finish my question and was cut off and told that I could come and try my luck but there were people waiting. I had to go and take a number and hopefully I could be helped with whatever service I needed. I took my drivers test here and thought I'd share what I did wrong, I was told I followed the road rules perfectly and obeyed traffic good and I did a good parallel and a good uphill but here's what made me "fail" 1.coming back from the road test into the parking lot his words were "even tho there's no stop sign, or pedestrains crossing or cars coming out you have to come to a full stop before entering a parking lot" so think about that now, my car would've been stopping traffic is I listened to that idiot 2. at a set of traffic lights using the turn lane I have to apparently check my blind spot behind me to see if any car for some reason breaks the yellow line way behind to race up 3. turning right onto another street the speed limit was 50 I slowed to about 20km but he docked me a point because it should be 10km for a turn as he said, you have to completley stop any gas in your car and basically let it slow roll for it to be 10 4. at an uncontrolled intersection the lady across from me was turning right and she was already stopped ahead of me letting me pass (speed limit was 40 I stopped to 30) and proceeded after checking my left and right, let's not forget I was on her right side so I have right of way he docked me a point because he thought I didn't check enough 5. I was willing to take the point on it because it's easier for me to one handed parallel park so I did, I know id get a point taken but I know I'm a good driver so I was willing don't go here! they basically just fucking robbed 100$ from me read more

Worst registry and rude examiners. I had a lady examine my testing and she docked me marks absurdly. Her examiner number is 14340, Cathy. She told me that I never engaged the parking brake when I had done so and told me that the emergency and parking brake were two different things when it's literally not. Her reasons were absolutely garbage for failing me with 160 points. This was my second test that I have taken and I took my first one and AMA. I didn't pass but I had only gotten 75 points REASONABLY with an F. Comparing both AMA and Southland result sheets for me is absolutely absurd since Southland failed me for almost everything and AMA did not. I recommend anything but this registry. She's failing people just so the registry can get more business. I was simply asking her a question at the end of my road test and she simply told me "No" as if I was arguing with her and cutting me off. This registry needs better workers with better attitudes. Huge waste of time and money. Not posting this out of spite because of failing but this registry is absolutely garbage even when I went for my learners as well. read more

Every single time I have been to Southland Registry I get the worst customer service. Everyone that had provided me with service has been extremely rude. I had a road test scheduled for 9:00 AM and I got an email AND a text message asking me to come to the registry 30 minutes BEFORE my appointment, meaning 8:30AM. I get there for 8:20 just to be prompt. Shortly afterwards, I see the employees piling in at 8:30AM. I call them to see if they would like me to come in as their email AND text message instructed me to do so, and they tell me they aren't opening their doors until right before 9 AM and that I must wait in my car for 30 minutes. The service here is atrocious. Highly recommend going anywhere but Southland Registries for anything vehicle related. read more

I left Calgary and flew to Vancouver and shuttled my Ma and I to my rental car place. Casually hung about while being processed until the lady said "your license is expired". Panic. No way to take the car without valid license, no refunds (got a ten day rental), no delay, rental clock is ticking , my 89 year old mother is weakly fanning herself on a complimentary chair, and our hotel is in North Vancouver. We slowly made our way there in the rain and fog and drizzle. Southland Registration in Calgary saved the day. I had a heck of a time coming up with all the necessary proofs while not at my home and not near my papers. Michelle guided me through everything. The guys who answered my earlier pleas were somewhat helpful. But Michelle was steller. She made it all work out. The rental place now has a copy of my temporary license, my Ma is sleeping, and tomorrow morning we will pick up the rental. Thank you Southland Registration! read more

My review is in regards to the driving test they offer and even with the same instructor how inconsistant they are in marking. I booked online, not reserving a rental because my brother was letting me borrow his car. Show up the 15 minutes and check in. Online it tells you very specifically what to bring, ans I brought all of it. Then ahe asked for the vehiclea regiatration ans insurance, go out to the car and can only find the registration. Call my brother and he has the insurance in his wallet so hes coming back, but gets there half hour after my apointment started so I wasnt able to take my test, but they kept my money anyway. Rebook. With a rental. Had michelle. I got docked becauae there was a yield sign towards me and a man driving a focus so I yeiled to him (ended up complete stop) as he was right of way but at the last second he turned on his blinker and turned up my street so I fail for not taking the right of way . . . . . Really? Becauae if the driver had of put on his signal light I would have known to just yield and continue on. So mad. Everything else went great. Rebooked. With a rental. Had michelle . This time I lost my uphill parking (which she had no issue with the first time) I wasnt close enough to the curb. Asked her if i could do it again and she said no, because she had already given me a lesson. I told her I wish I knew that her giving me a lesson Wouldnt allow me a second chance because I would have told her to not to give me a lesson. Hello!! Rebooked. With a rental. Had michelle. This time I was seemless, I was giving her no reason to fail me. Then I come to this pedal biker. Its 4 lane road in a school zone, so i cant pass him. School zone ends and im going 25 behind this biker in a 50 zone and fail for impeding traffic. I get it, i was going slow but we share the road with bikers Four times at Southland is enough. Went to Registry Depot on 17th and passed first try, no issues. Ps I think its crazy in Alberta that weve let the system be privatized. In New Brunswick the same test is $25 (the government charges $5 for the lisence) . But back home its called "Service Canada" and they actually care. They dont charge half as much and actually put effort in. So over these gouging private regestries. Crazy!!! read more

Although I've yet to find a registry office where the staff are pleasant human beings, this particular location is consistently the rudest, most disgruntled, unprofessional group of staff I have ever encountered. I had a very different experience then some of the below comments . The one review is absolutely disgusting and unnecessary, in my opinion. The other reviews are coming from people who should only be upset with themselves for failing the exams, not the teachers. I had Michelle for my drivers test and she was great. She made me feel very comfortable behind the wheel, when it can be a little nerve racking. We even had a bit of small chit chat. My 2 sisters also ended up having her for their tests and they loved her as well. Thank you Michelle.. I also had Darryl when getting off of my GDL and he was great too. Very friendly and also made me feel comfortable with some light chit chat throughout the exam. I live closer to the Shawnessy registry but I go out of my way to go to southland because I just find all the staff there a lot more friendly then the staff @ the Shawnessy location. read more

Don't take your driving exam here if its with MICHELLE LOSCHUK. Super arrogant and condescending.. She failed me for following a school bus zone 30 kph and told me I need to know that there's no school in July. then the next day there's a school bus full of kids during the road test..unfortunately I got her again and did an auto fail for something else.Always an auto fail, seems she's failing just for the purpose of business for this registry. She even has the audacity to ask who I am with when I take my exam. I found out from my friend that when she was at the registry she saw this particular examiner yelling at an older lady. UPDATE Its funny that someone here would say failed driver testing do the bad reviews, I passed driver test on first take on a different registry, same as with the other reviewers here. The thing that bothers us is how unprofessional, arrogant and condescending your Driver tester Michelle is. She should not be working at this registry, but then again, money keeps coming in because of her attitude. If you have common decency, you would replace this examiner. I like the service at Southland. My experience with the staff has always been positive. They have been friendly and very helpful. I have seen them go the extra mile for customers and had the experience myself. The only complaint I have is the wait times. For example this morning, when it was extremely busy there were only two staff working the counter. There were at least 15 people in line. I was number 10 when I came in and and there were a few that came in after me. This is not just a Southland thing though. It is the general situation at almost every registry I have ever been to. This morning I planed to be there when the doors opened, but as Murphy's law would have it, it was not meant to be. Anyway I was there for an hour. I don't understand why reviewers are giving Michelle a bad rep..I've just done my class 5 gdl this morning and Michelle is very friendly and great! I ended up passing for my first attempt! If you're looking for a registry to do your road test, come to this location!! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone! I have a couple of friends who've had Darrel for their road test and they've all said that Darrel is great! And for the registry itself, the customer service is pretty great compared to the other registries in the city..This registry actually has staff members greet you with a smile, unlike other registries I've been to they look like someone has sh*t in their cereal or something. I've said it before, but this place is great. Also, if you're saying this place has poorly trained staff..hah, go to shawnessy ;) PS. If you've failed your road test and you're reading this, don't put your anger towards the registry and/or your tester..They're just doing their job and using their fair judgement to see if you can operate a motor vehicle safely and legally. Instead of getting upset that you've failed and digitally attacking this place for its staff members, you should use the failed attempt as a reminder to yourself that YOU can pass and be a better driver than you were when you failed. read more

I have never seen a business with staff this rude. There are a few nice staff though - maybe about 1. The rest I have witnessed borderline abusing the customers. I find it hard to believe they get away with this on a daily basis. I have been going here for years and it's been the same. I'm not even sure why I continue to go here. I sit there waiting for them to call me up and pray to god that I don't get someone who is negative and abusive because I know they will make LAME excuses not to help me with what I need on that visit and make me feel like I'm 100% stupid all in one go. To the staff at Southland Registration: we are all just human beings and deserve to be treated as such when we confide in your business to help us with daily needs. I don't know what you have been through and I'm terribly sorry that your life sucks that bad that you bring it to work and take it out on your customers. I've consistently used Southland for about 10 years, as they were located next to my office at Southport and were located on my walk to the shuttle parking lot on Horton Road. In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit I used them for convenience in that sense since I was walking right past. Previously I had used the registry at Southland Co-op. As another reviewer pointed out, very few registries get top marks for friendliness. I've also used the registry offices at North-Hill mall at least once, and most recently a dismal interaction at Shawnessy Licence & Registry, and so have some means of comparison. Mostly, I think if you go in with your eyes open, and follow instructions, you are going to be ok. Southland requires you to take a number. I take a number. I have my license, registration, insurance with me. I don't make a lot of small talk or try to be funny. This is not part of the experience. To that end, I get my business accomplished relatively quickly and painlessly. The staff are not there to entertain me, but get me through a mundane process, and to that, they accomplish the task without dehumanizing me, which is all I require of them. I have actually been impressed by the efficiency with which they process the work once I'm up at the counter. For that reason, I recommend them. I like that I can pay via different methods (something other places don't necessarily permit), and I may be exaggerating the sterility of the interactions. I seem to recall a little banter, or being asked to redo a photo, etc. Good service, and probably the best of the several other registries I've tried. read more

Went there to get my car registration renewed and had the distinct displeasure of having a rather plump red-head named Chelsea provide me service. And by service, I mean no greeting, no question on what I was there for (I had to tell her), no explanation on what she was doing, just handing me the terminal for me to pay. No word of thanks either. Unbelievable that I was paying for this when there are other choices out there. If Chelsea hates her life/job so much, she should quit. Otherwise, her bosses should realize that she is the front person for the registry and has totally displayed the kind of behaviour that forced people to rate this business so lowly so often on Yelp. I won't be back and if this stops you, you can thank me later - Chelsea sure won't. read more

Yikes! There are some interesting and entertaining reviews below lol... My reason for visiting Southland Registrations wasn't for a driver's test, so unfortunately no entertaining story from me. We actually visited Southland Registrations for a Marriage License :). They're open 7 days a week, so hopping in over the weekend was no problem! We also checked out their website ahead of time and although it's not the prettiest site, it is very comprehensive! They listed out exactly what we needed, what the fee was and even made sure to note that we must come in at least 30 minutes prior to close to allow for sufficient time. Compared to some of the other registry sites I looked at, it was much better; a lot more information and more transparent, most sites didn't have their fees listed at all. This made it much easier to know what to expect without having to call and play 21 questions. They even offer some services online. It wasn't overly busy when we got there and the parking lot is big enough to support customer parking even if it was. When we first approached the counter we were given the form and asked to take a ticket even though it wasn't very busy. I'm all for ticket systems, but I find them a bit redundant for situations that don't dictate them, I think it would be better if they used it only when busy, not when I can clearly see three open wickets. Anyways... back to the form! The form followed the requirements laid out on their website so there were no surprises. The girl helping us was polite and didn't give us any added grief. She was not the horrid DMV stereotype that seems to exist, very easy to deal with and she was able to process our request professionally and efficiently, she was even friendly! For payment you'll have to pay 3% if you use credit card, never a fan of places doing this as they're transferring their costs onto customers which doesn't seem justified since it should be a business cost. Overall pretty good experience, I'd definitely go back for any of my registry needs. They won a Consumer Choice Award and have been in business for over 20 years, so they really can't be that bad. ATB Financial has also opened up an Agency with them and I doubt they'd partner with a business that has a bad reputation. All in all, seems like they have a good professional track record and they haven't given me reason to think they don't deserve it. read more

Firstly, The emails and texts say to arrive 20-25 minutes ahead of time. My test was at 9:00am on a saturday. a few minutes before the registry opens a rude man pushes to the front and goes in, only for the rest of us to be told hes an employee. This man did not look in the least bit presentable. old ripped pants and shoes, stains on his clothes and an old greasy grey ponytail. This man was my tester, Darrel. At first he seemed like a pretty nice guy until I realized he was just VERY sarcastic. I have spent a lot of time practicing and recently a lot of time parallel parking. I read online quite often that to get 75 points you would have to be a bad driver. I am a safe driver. I did touched the curb gently with the back wheel and asked to do it again, he gladly agreed. To which after a perfectly safe uphill parallel park with a good 360 check, signals, good control he calls "Extraordinary". He gave me shit because he thought I could be looking over my shoulders a little more thoroughly. stopping AT a stop sign, when the stop sign was allegedly more than 3m from the crossing, which is pretty much his judgement. either way I'd rather stop at one than go through one. we turned on to a playground zone, no sign was visible but I still went below 30 because I could see a playrgound ahead. which he seemed almost annoyed about. a solid green light at an intersection, i scanned ahead and saw I had plenty of time before a car would be at the intersection, it really was light traffic at 9am. Either way he said I should have anticipated that the car could have sped up and jumped the light hitting us. How the hell is that something you should go into every intersection thinking? So we get back to the registry, I was a little worried about the thoroughness of my shoulder checks and handling of my speed through the playground zone etc. we get back to southland and he tells me that I need to be more cautious of oncoming traffic at green lights bla bla uncontrolled intersections (which he thought I didn`t check thoroughly enough). he hands me my paper and gets out of the car and into the registry. He didn`t even tell me how I did, no good luck next time kid or anything. 120 freakin points. the perfect parking, and backing up he gave me 60 points. Almost enough points to fail the test on something that I didn`t even make any mistakes on. If I had hit a car or something sure I could imagine a fail or 60 points but wow. 90 bucks down the drain and a very unproffesional tester. Do not use this registry. If you do and you get Darrel reschedule asap. People like that really have no business testing drivers. In my opinion if you drive safely, you should pass. the first 2 years of the class 5 is a major learning experience for all motorists, to get so overrealistically crushed at a first attempt is just disheartening. read more

I have to agree with the people reviewing the driving test. What a waste of time!! I took two tests there and was disqualified both times for absolutely ridiculous reasons. Once for "turning too slowly" and another time because I didn't stop for a jaywalker who was clearly waiting for me to pass anyway. Both instructors I had (Michelle and Ron) were assholes just looking for the cash. Neither were helpful at all andboth actually raised their voices at me when I pointed out how crazy the reason for disqualifying me was. After those horrible experiences I decided to try another registry and passed with flying colors the first try and when I brought up my issues with Southland to the instructer at the new registry they agreed with how insane and unfair southland treated me. Not sure how the registry as a whole is for dealing with other issues but DO NOT go there for a driving test!! read more

Michelle is a witch! I'm sorry. Did I just call Michelle a witch? Oh yes. That's right. Now I call her a witch because she smiles with you while she slowly kills you. Now before the test started she clearly said she will give instructions ahead of time and she wil not be using any tricks. Well she did exactly what she said she would not do. In addition she was extremely mean on the minor things...things one would not expect to be penalized for. For example, going through an uncontrolled intersection a little faster than she thought you should go. So she said. "be careful at your uncontrolled intersections." I said "ok." and at the end of the test she deducted marks for that. When I was doing my parallel park (as I started to back up, while the front of the car was still in the road), I realized that I would be too close to the curb, so I went forward a little, before continuing. Now that clearly was not a parked car since the front of the car was in the road. So I went forward and then continued thereafter and came to a perfect park. At the end of the test, the witch said that I lost marks for my parallel park because I did it two times. Now that was not two times, because I did not park the first time. Michelle this is not the first time I have done a road test so I know what I am saying. Now in all my years of driving I have never changed lanes while going through an intersection. While going through an intersection, with the light on green, Michelle quickly said, you will make a left far down there. Now when you are being instructed by an examiner, the mindset is to do what they say quickly or you might just miss the turn. She used her mental manipulation and by the time I am making the lane change, I realized "oh shit" I cant turn back now. This woman is truly a witch. She will take you through multiple school zones on streets that intersect with each other. So you see the starting of the school zone and then there is no end zone sign. You see another starting school zone sign in the distance so you start moving a little faster when there is no end zone sign. On single lane roads Michelle removes marks for not being to the extreme left or right, saying that you are "kind of straddling" when its clearly a one lane road (unless there is a vehicle parked on the right). My point is that you dont remove points for that, because no car can never drive pass you on a single lane road, neither can you overtake another car that is ahead of you on a single lane road. People do not get penalized for straddling on single lane roads. She removed points for that. She showed it all to me. There was more but with violations like these I probably should not be on the road (if I should let the witch get to me). I went elsewhere and passed easily. Michelle gives a pass each time she gets a poor review. She does not deserve not even one star. read more

It was my first time suing this registry and boy am i not using it again!!! they make you pay for the incompetence of their staff. i renewed my lic and having moved to a new community my postal code needed to be "overridden " so as not to default to another address i made sure i told the staff that. when my paper printed i checked and it had my address... i didn't get my lic... called edmonton about it was told my address was incorrect and i needed to have to changed. going back to the same registry since it was their mistake. told them my story, now being asked to pay for a change of address because i signed a paper saying the wrong address was my address???ah duh would't i have paid for more if i had it changed and not just a renewal? and that it was totally my fault. even though the manager said" oh they didn't override the system to change her postal code?" read more

I strongly advise that you do not take your road test here if you are an anxious person. Michelle failed me two times, the first try was a dumb reason the second was agreeable. My drivers ed teacher even agreed that it was unnecessary to fail me. Maybe she was just in a bad mood both days because I've heard she is very nice from others who have had her.. The first time she made me uncomfortable because she did not seem like she wanted to even test me, then getting mad because my car was too hot for her liking. The second time she was already put in a bad mood because I showed up "late"... I WAS NOT LATE! The site says come 15 minutes early so I showed up 20 minutes early only to find out the registry opens at 12 on Sundays.. My road test was at 12.. She saw me waiting outside, I went in and waited at the sign that says road test, she came out at 12:10 and I was still waiting and she gave attitude to my mom and I for being late.. She then proceeded to raise her voice when I was in the car with her because I miss interpreted what she said. So basically if you have even slight anxiety do not go here! It is a complete waste of money. I do not think that you should spend nearly $100 to get tested by someone who has a bad attitude towards her job and her customers. If she would have had a better attitude and made me feel more comfortable I would have been okay(ish) with failing. But if you have the ability to ignore snarky comments, sighs, eye rolls, and just overall bad vibes I say go for it, just don't expect a nice tester that is understanding lol. I hope she reads these reviews and learns so be kinder to new drivers.. they are nervous so don't be rude or harsh, you don't want to ruin their experience like you did mine :) read more

Do not believe the reviews you read about Michelle, the driving tester. My son got his license his first try. He had taken the drivers training program, drove around Calgary and all major roadways and highways numerous times and practiced his parallel and hill parking till he perfected it. Michelle pointed out where he lost points, mostly because he was nervous, which he learned from. Michelle is definitely fair. If you take drivers training, follow the speed limit, and read the Alberta Transportation driving manual, you will pass. read more

WASTE OF TIME & MONEY (AND DIGNITY). Michelle (a real bi**h) is there to fail you no matter what. She contradicted herself but I guess she thinks her opinion is above the law. She failed me because in a 3 way stop I did not wait for the other car to start going (that car was not going anyways), then at the very next 3 way stop she failed me because I waited too long to go. WTF??? And check this, in the first situation the other car had the right of way but was not moving, on the second I had the right of way but I just waited for the car in the intersection to come to a full stop before I keep going. On both situations we arrived and stopped at the same time; but she said: "you have to pay attention who stopped first, even if it is a fraction of a milisecond" Can somebody tell me how to measure or eyeball a fraction of a millisecond? Also, she said, is because you did not start that the other car started going (but that was exactly what I had done before and she totally dissaproved of). She also exagerates when giving you feedback saying (and speaking louder), "because you did not start going (from a stop sign), the car behind you is going to smash rear end you BOOOM!!!! just like that". Ive never seen that happened from a full stop but anyways I guess is her power trip. Also she is kind of rude and will give attitude I.e. she would purse her lips and roll her eyes on you (if you rent a car and are not familiarized with that particular model). At the registry, you have to take a number, which does not guarantee you are going to be assisted in an orderly maner. They just ask whoever is standing there how can they help without considering if that person took a number or not (that happened to me), they do not call by number. I should have paid attention to all the comments here and in Yelp. I know they are not there to entertain people, but definitely they could use some maners and common courtesy when dealing with people. I do not think I will ever go there again. read more

This place has terrible customer service! I came in, took a number and waited for 20 minutes then they called my number and someone else waked up to the counter before me and claimed to have my number, I politely corrected the person and the clerk working told me that she might as well just help that person first and I can just keep waiting and see the next available clerk. I signed up for yelp and I'm writing my review while I'm still waiting. read more

After an appointment nearby, I decided to take my learners test, and I'm 20 btw finally!! I had managed to find this place, however I don't recommend walking there cause it's missing sidewalks and proper crosswalks. I managed to get there safely, and to my surprise, the interior of the registry was much nicer than the one at Shawnessy. Instead of a line up, there was a take a number system. I waited about 10 min, that's all, compared to half an hour the previous day at shawnessy, where I wasn't allowed to write my test without a passport. So within 40 min I passed my test, on the first try, got my temporary license, and afterwards rewarded myself with a bottle of ginger ale from the pop machine. The guy who helped me was really nice too! So no complaints here aside from the walking path. if the wait is ever long, there are quarter candy machines and snack machines too! read more
