First of all, The Scene can be found for free at countless locations throughout the city. It features album, book and film reviews as well as hard news pieces on the goings-on in and around Nashville. They also print some pretty popular features, such as the "Best of Nashville" list, and their website is extensive with archives of all the articles they publish. The Scene is a Village Voice publication, and those people know how to run a paper. With all the staffers and contributors The Scene employs, it's pretty easy to see that if something interesting goes down in Nashville, one of our guys will cover it. There are always listings of upcoming shows and events as well as reviews of things you may have missed. Besides, it's free! It certainly doesn't look like a hastily thrown-together publication, however.

I work at one of only 5 fully plant based restaurants in Nashville but somehow we are left out of any articles like "where to find best vegetarian meals" but they'll instead mention a meat-centric restaurant with a few vegetable dishes, like wtf? Is it because we turn them down when we get sales calls from them? Because we don't want to buy advertising in their cheap rag? I agree with Simply S. that the staff at Scene only write about the things they're interested instead of covering the wide variety of happenings in Nashville. It's poor representation and they should hold themselves to a higher standard.

While "The Scene" is the publication to check out for music and film reviews and occasional news features, "The City Paper" is a great way to check out the goings-on of the city that may not be covered in "The Tennessean." "The City Paper" has several pick-up locations all over the city, but if you're unable to track a copy down, you can always read their full issues at www.nashvillecitypaper.com. They have some really strong writers, and they focus mainly on city politics rather than state or national news. They have some good features in their Lifestyles and City Voices sections, and most issues are at least worth picking up.

The City Paper seems to me to be aiming for just being generally informative about whats up in Nashville with regards to businesses, neighborhoods, and not so much focus on cirme or car accidents. I am in real estate so obviously, I use it a lot just to stay up to date about developments, new industries coming in, things the mayor may be doing etc.. I have to be frank that with 3 kids and a career my time is limited to skimming headlines for articles that are relevant to me and my goals or activities. I really can't give it an honest critique for accuracy or editorial content. I use it strictly to get information and I certainly feel I find more useful tidbits that I do in the Tennessean about what's going on in our fine city.

The day before the event, though, it was cancelled due to ... gotta love it, bad weather. The event has yet to provide details about how to request a refund, nor has it provided a new date/time. In my book, that's false advertising and unprofessional communication, enough that I'll think twice before attending a future Nashville Lifestyles event. Because Nashville Lifestyles is monthly, they advertise upcoming events far earlier, and they sponsor their own events too, including a summer bash, the bartending bash and a singles event. The articles are interesting. There's no real news, just interest pieces about Nashville people, events, restaurants and phenomena. This month's edition had a great article about country music stars who've started restaurants and food brands, like Jimmy Dean Sausage and Kenny Roger's Roasters.

We were sent proofs twice,the first one being full of incorrect information including wrong address,name and phone number,services that our business didn't offer,spelling and punctuation errors galore...we were so disappointed that we asked to please just cancel the article and we would still pay for small ad..the answer to that was "I'm pretty sure you can't"..ummm, well, I'm pretty sure I want to.. so find out?! No answer to that. We then wrote them a huge paragraph saying what all the wrong information was, and sent new photos because apparently they could not use the ones we sent. Our response now back was a revised article with the new picture that looked decent,info was at least correct, so we responded back that it looked fine now, thank you for fixing it. Well apparently somehow the proof we confirmed yes for them to use all of the sudden was now not possible..the title was changed, huge space gaps between words, a giant quote box in the center of article(something we specifically requested NOT to be there)..and now once again no photo which was included with price, because that one also was not able to be used..pictures were taken with a Nikon D-90,high resolution, we could have changed them to be able to be used by them had we known what the problem was..So these changes were made known to us through an e-mail at 4 p.m., a few hours before the article ran,no phone call to any of our 3 contact numbers so we could okay it..When we saw the e-mail first thing in the morning, we hated the changes, and looked at the online paper to see that they had already printed it, and furthermore made more changes! Being a brand new business and this being our first attempt at advertising this was extremely disappointing. We also let them know how unhappy we were and requested a copy of the form I had filled out, and no response back at all. They will not even respond back with a yes or no as to whether I can have this item...Very rude and unprofessional, we can't understand why they would have sent us a proof of something to verify and then change completely with no notice.I would also think you would want your spelling and punctuation to be correct before you send something to a customer.....Will NEVER use them again or recommend to anyone who wants something higher quality than a kindergartner could write.

I thought wow this is a unique way to get your daily newspaper. I asked a co-worker and found out that this is a publication put out by homeless people and they have to follow a program and basically they pick these papers up and are allowed to sell them for money for themselves as opposed to just hanging out with a sign that said hungry- need food. I was very intriqued. I started buying the paper each it was convenient---stopped at a red light had the change hanging or my wallet handy as I think this is a great idea and once I started to actually get the little publication I enjoyed the articles. The articles are typically by homeless or former homeless people. I appreciate that this program is in place and I certainly feel more comfortable rolling down my window and or making eye contact and acknowledging these folks that are trying to do something to better their situation.

The writers of the articles are more like teenage fans gushing over a famous movie star than true journalists writing a story. The truth is stretched to the limit and sometimes to the point that history is rewritten. Sometimes you can even go read past articles about a business and it will say something entirely different than the current article. Not a lot of background checked on the featured person. I know cause I went to school with one featured business owner who totally lied about her degree in the article. Style Blueprint reminds me of an online version of those magazines at the checkout counter in the grocery store like National Enquirer. A successful business owner should not waste their money on advertising in this glorified online blog.

It's good to have another source for finding entertainment. Although they cover the same events as the Scene, there's a more fun, less judgmental spin and the emphasis is on fun. They cover events and have party coverage and a celebrity "you were spotted," which I admit to reading and enjoying.

What was formally All the Rage, Metromix is another free and entertaining paper that you can grab…read moreup in Nashville. They seem to center themselves in their food reviews and music articles. They do a great job of listing shows by genre, and have ads for local restaurants, many including coupons. They take on a more People Magazine gossip approach than The Nashville Scene does, so you'll have little snippets of where Taylor Swift was and what bookstore Nicole Kidman visits. They used to have a very detailed pull out every week of apartments in the city, which I thought was very helpful, but they still have classified for you to go through, so that's alright too.
