WRVU is the best thing happening on Nashville's airwaves. It's one of two stations I listen to, and…read morethe only one that allows djs to create interesting playlists. The authenticity that comes across from the djs is what is so compelling and keeps the station firmly on my car's first setting. Because of this I've been turned onto tons of new music, and have had many "OMG! I can't believe they're playing ---! Heart times a million, 91.1!" moments. Today, as I was cruising along 40 under the baking sun, I slowly began to realize they were playing experimental Impulse-era Coltrane. I have NEVER heard anything from Coltrane's later career on the radio, let alone here in the South, and it made me so frigging happy. The mood was perfect for my day and the drive and all was right with the world. And then. A couple minutes later the dj revealed that the owners of the station have announced that they are "considering" selling the student-run station. The only station I truly love. My WRVU. Sad face. Let's not let this happen. You can read about, and hopefully make an impact here: http://www.wrvu.org/?p=637

WRVU is the student run Vanderbilt radio station. This radio station is a breath of fresh air. They have a new program with a real live DJ every hour or every two hours. Some programs are 'talk,' some programs are hardcore rock, some programs are indie rock. Can you imagine a world with so little automation!? WRVU is that world. It's fantastic to listen to. Even if the genre isn't what I am into listening to, I still enjoy hearing the DJ's chatter away. Most of the DJs are on the ametuer side, which in my opinion makes listening even more fun, because these are real human beings we are listening to. There are a few veteran DJs who have some of the better 'drive-time' slots. They play some roots country music, and some blues in addition to great local indie artists. A couple of my favorite shows are: 'Grumpstown,' which is a Japanese pop show, 'The Peguin Parade,' which is eclectic dance rock, and the 'Rebel Music' show, which is reggae and ska. Go to the WRVU website to get their full schedule of shows. The station is broadcast from Vandy, so you can be assured you are hip with what the young kids are listening to. Since Nashville is Music City, I think this station really does justice to all the different kinds of listeners this city has. WRVU really has an great offering, so when you are in town, tune in to 91.1 fm!

"Nashville: Love Life. Love Music." -WRVW…read more I was tired of listening to the music from Youtube and turned on the radio to get something local. I landed on WRVW for a while and enjoyed the tunes as I drove through Nashville's awesome traffic. It's amazing how many highways join up and split as they pass through this big city! Dua Lipa, Eminem, Linkin Park, Miley Cyrus. It's not rock and it's not adult. It's Top 40ish pop and they seem to play a LOT of Taylor Swift. 107.5 is part of the iHeart radio conglomerate and they're happy to advertise for themselves and the big iHeart music festival that you can catch on other stations or win tickets. *eye roll* [Review 20072 overall - 428 in Tennessee - 1048 of 2023.]

Before I could find out if "A Prairie Home Companion" is part of this lineup, I quickly turned the dial. After half a dozen country music stations, I came across something that reminded me of home: a Top 40 station. Granted, the playlist will repeat itself after a couple of hours. And I was saddened that there wasn't a morning show. The music is solid, but not risky enough to try new releases unless other stations in other markets do so beforehand. But at least I won't be chewing my arm off if I had to endure "A Prairie Home Companion".

However, from a purely objective standpoint (because I felt this way even before they hired me), I can say that The Scene is the best publication in Nashville when it comes to arts and entertainment. First of all, The Scene can be found for free at countless locations throughout the city. It features album, book and film reviews as well as hard news pieces on the goings-on in and around Nashville. They also print some pretty popular features, such as the "Best of Nashville" list, and their website is extensive with archives of all the articles they publish. The Scene is a Village Voice publication, and those people know how to run a paper. With all the staffers and contributors The Scene employs, it's pretty easy to see that if something interesting goes down in Nashville, one of our guys will cover it. There are always listings of upcoming shows and events as well as reviews of things you may have missed. Besides, it's free! It certainly doesn't look like a hastily thrown-together publication, however.

I work at one of only 5 fully plant based restaurants in Nashville but somehow we are left out of any articles like "where to find best vegetarian meals" but they'll instead mention a meat-centric restaurant with a few vegetable dishes, like wtf? Is it because we turn them down when we get sales calls from them? Because we don't want to buy advertising in their cheap rag? I agree with Simply S. that the staff at Scene only write about the things they're interested instead of covering the wide variety of happenings in Nashville. It's poor representation and they should hold themselves to a higher standard.

If you don't want to buy an HD radio to hear the other streams, I guess classical CDs would be your option. While "The Scene" is the publication to check out for music and film reviews and occasional news features, "The City Paper" is a great way to check out the goings-on of the city that may not be covered in "The Tennessean." "The City Paper" has several pick-up locations all over the city, but if you're unable to track a copy down, you can always read their full issues at www.nashvillecitypaper.com. They have some really strong writers, and they focus mainly on city politics rather than state or national news. They have some good features in their Lifestyles and City Voices sections, and most issues are at least worth picking up.

The Tennessean is your normal Newspaper standpoint so you get everything from fires and crime, National and world news, to some little bits about a civic project here and there. Normal Newspaper stuff. The City Paper seems to me to be aiming for just being generally informative about whats up in Nashville with regards to businesses, neighborhoods, and not so much focus on cirme or car accidents. I am in real estate so obviously, I use it a lot just to stay up to date about developments, new industries coming in, things the mayor may be doing etc.. I have to be frank that with 3 kids and a career my time is limited to skimming headlines for articles that are relevant to me and my goals or activities. I really can't give it an honest critique for accuracy or editorial content. I use it strictly to get information and I certainly feel I find more useful tidbits that I do in the Tennessean about what's going on in our fine city.
