I think it's great that this library backs onto the park. The library have some rather large windows where you can sit down in rather comfy seats, read the daily paper and sometimes look up to enjoy the views. I have found that all of the library stock is wide-ranging, good quality and up-to-date. My only criticism is that I think their library charges are a bit too high. I suppose you get what you pay for, but I still think it could be lower.

The geek in me also like the automation, you can check the books out yourself and a you return the books to a robot which then send the books to the appropriate trolley, you can also ask them to p t your email address on the system so when your book is overdue it will email you, it must be said it would make more sense though if it told you before it was overdue. they also have activity for the kids like baby "bounce and rhyme" and they also have a drop-box so you can return your books out of hours

Anyone is welcome there due to the range of books and there are areas for children to sit and read. It is also very well situated because it is next to a primary school which will encourage all aged children to read. Downham has always been known to be a rough area, but nevertheless it feels like the staff work hard to engage with the community and make it a place that the residents can call their own. As well there being a good selection of books, DVDs and CDs and talking books, there are always loads of fun craft activities for children and story-times for babies and tots. There are at least 15 computers available for internet access. It's free and easy join the library (just show at least one proof of ID) and anyone can join, i.e.you don't have to be a Lewisham resident to qualify.

I've used the library to look at the newspapers and magazines to save me buying them, and also for browsing the internet when my internet access at home has been down. There are plenty of internet terminals available for up to an hour at a time, you just have to show your membership card at the main desk and the staff will log you in to one of the computers, assuming one is available, as they can get very busy after school hours. The staff are very polite and helpful. There is a good, large childrens library here, and they open late on Wednesdays until 8pm which is handy if you work all day. You can also borrow Cds and DVDs, and of course - books! I think the library would benefit from having some public toilets on site or very close by, but apart from that I have found Sidcup library to be very useful for me!

I think this is quite a charming characteristic though. They do stock really up-to-date books and they have a really good selection of adult non-fiction in particular for this medium-sized library. They work hard and they run many activities for children. It's got a nice atmosphere and is a really good resource for the local community and for visitors too.
