They stock Johnstons paints which can be mixed to any shade you want on the premises and the paint is of a high quality and easy to use. It has all your painting and decorating needs. The woman who works here however, is not the most welcoming, but is still helpful, once you get past the initial coolness. Very handy local shop selling, screwdrivers, to light fittings, paper and paint.

The store has a lovely corner location on Great Western Road and two sides of the shop are floor to ceiling glass so you really get an idea of how the paint looks in natural light but remember this means it could look lighter than it would in certain rooms of your house. The staff I've dealt with on a couple of different occasions have been helpful - suggesting paint colours and mapping out little mood boards in the store. We bought paint for our hallway and it's good quality / nice to paint with but I don't really see why it costs so much more than Dulux trade paint for example hence knocking off a star.

The shop is a really peaceful oasis on GWR! Lovely ambiance, I could stay in there all day! I ended up returning the samples and went with a cheaper brand as they are pretty pricey, but they have lovely subtle shades if you've got the money. Returning the items was seamless and they have a great 28 day return policy. I kept the colour chart and they also keep a record of the paints you like in their system, should you choose to re-order or come back. I think you get what you pay for here, with a lovely customer experience far better than a trip to homebase, but it's still out of the budget for me.

The store is nice and bright and stocks a good range of items from locks to power tools and wood. The wood can be cut to the size you need. They also have some fires and garden equipment. The prices can be a bit more than other diy places but the 10% weekends are really handy.

Everything is pretty jumbled (which I like, for a rummage) but if you're needing any help then the service is spot on - so far the wonderful woman has known exactly where every item I've asked for is. The best bit about the shop though is the good natter that you always get. I love it! Every neighbourhood should have a shop like this and every neighbour should shop at a shop like this.

The staff are very helpful and it seems that, if you can't find what you're looking for, they probably have it out the back, so it's worth asking! One end of the shop is given over to the picture framing area. They are very experienced at this and can give professional advice on framing. There is a wide range of frames and mounts available. You might pay a bit more here than in the larger chain-stores (which is only to be expected) and sometimes the shop is extremely crowded (which does show how popular it is). You may have to wait a while in a queue and it's a bit of a squeeze moving about especially in the narrow space beside the counter.

The pavement outside the store is lined with stack boxes of various sizes, old-lady-style shopping trolleys and plastic flowers, among many, many other things. Once inside, believe me when I say that you won't know where to start. It's the kind of shop that stocks everything - but you'll still have to have hawk-like vision to be able to track down what it is that you went in there for. In fact, despite the over flowing shelves packed with crockery, tools, paint, wool, toys, light fittings, kitchen implements etc etc etc - I could really only focus on the ceiling. Why? Because it's weird. It's covered in plaster spikes with purple ends. I think you really need to see it for yourself. They were also playing a CD of Abba's greatest hits. This may attract you, or it may repel you. I'll let you make up your own mind.

Indeed you get the impression a bit of thought has gone into the nick nacks they sell. Instead of being a randomly assembled collection of disco balls, dog toys and Hannah Montana pencil cases, this place stocks genuinely useful item - plug adapters, USB cables, TV aerials, paint brushes etc... It's also done in a, relatively speaking, orderly fashion and you will find staff to be extremely helpful. This business has been on Dumbarton Road for a very long time and it's easy to see why. Filled to the very brim with all that you would imagine of a place like this and more, i really cant be any more enthusiastic about this place. Having lived in this general area for the last 5 -6 years, this has always been my first stop when i have the "eh....is that broken?" moment. With a remedy for my home ailment usually in stock and a helpfull handy owner always willing to offer help and assistance a the drop of a hardhat (boom, boom!!), the West End Hardware is the finest of place to be....... West End Hardware, it does exactly what it says on the...eh, sign.

This is a little trip down nostalgia lane for me. My first ever job was working in a hardware store…read more- my Dad worked there and both my older brothers worked there so it was natural for me to get a job there when I turned 15. It was a nice hardware store, the kind of place that really strived for great customer service. It had a friendly, family atmosphere (unsurprisingly as nearly my whole family worked there). Then a monolith hardware store opened down the road and things got a little harder - it was one of those big warehouse places where you could wander for days trying to find a paint brush or a staff member and there's none in sight. Where you'll freeze your toes off and prices are high. Where you'll feel instantly depressed and long for the good old days when someone could just give you some help and guidance. That sums up my introduction to hardware in the UK. Visiting B&Q reminds me of one of these monolith hardware stores with no personality, friendliness or assistance. In fact, during my visit here yesterday afternoon I saw all of two people working here, and one of those was on the register. I loitered around the paint counter for quite some time as I needed some guidance and there was no one to be seen. I ended up just having to guess what I should buy as I didn't want to spend hours waiting for someone to appear. I went to the check out. There was self-checkouts with a staff member standing off to the side. I managed to check out without any rage-inducing scenes, and went on my merry way. The only person who spoke to me the whole time was a guy at the door on the way out who wanted to sell me new windows. Ah, no thanks pal, what I would have liked was some customer service.

My mum usually drags me here if she's looking for some inspiration for decorating and she usually finds it here, although more often than not I have to pitch in with some paint and a roller brush. You will find everything from plants, lawnmowers, doors, wall paper, paint to lightbulbs here and it really is massive! Even if you have to take your rug rats with you, they'll still have a blast here. My parents always took dragged me round when I was little and after moaning the whole car journey I soon got very excited as I could swing on the outdoor seats, collect wall paper samples, wooden flooring segments and there's even a vending machine, oh my goodness! A day out for all the family!
