I've always had a great experience at this Rec Center. One of the managers, Josh, is a fantastic employee. He greets us with a smile every time we visit and always takes the time to ask how our day is going. After speaking with him further, I learned he is actually in charge of maintenance and custodial staff, and does a great job! The staff there is constantly checking the facility, especially the pool and hot tub, to ensure all customers are safe and enjoying themselves. I must say, South Run is the cleanest facility I've seen compared to others where my kids have taken swimming classes. I frequently see custodial staff making rounds, keeping the facility spotless. Our family loves South Run, and it's great to see employees who genuinely care about their customers. read more

South Run RECenter was where my son practiced for soccer this fall. The fields are nice. We always made a point to arrive early to play at the playground. There are two separate sections, a little kids area and a big kids area, but there are still things for all kiddos on either side of the playground. They also have several swings and a tire swing. There is a large umbrella that covers the playground too. The bathrooms were always clean when we have used them. Staff inside the RECenter was always nice too. They offer a wide variety of classes here, and there is also a Go Ape! ropes course onsite. I really like this RECenter and will definitely return. 0 read more

Huge pool. Visiting my parents in NoVA with the kiddos and they took them to this pool to escape from the insane heat. Loved how they were different lanes that my kids could swim in without bumping into others. The lifeguards are attentive and polite. Stopped little kiddos running around the pool in their tracks. Clean and well-kept. Envious of all you North Virginians for having access to this kind of facility. read more

Before the COVID-19 pandemic we came here weekly for swim lessons and the staff were always nice and helpful with getting us checked in. We had an early-ish swim class (1115) but the locker rooms were always clean. A few times they were pretty packed and we'd have to wait to shower after the pool; but it was never dirty. Our swim instructors were great! Our toddler became more confident in the water and enjoyed all the singing and water play! We can't wait for swim lessons to open back up so we can keep learning. read more

Swimming Classes at South Run are not operated effectively. The swim cards criteria are not followed by the instructors. 1) There needs to be a written, published set of criteria and skill requirements for Swimming III. 2) There needs to be a written, published skill proficiency that all swim instructors follow. 3) Classes are cancelled on short notice / day of 4) Students (10 years old and below) are taught skills one week, and expected to master the same skill the following week. This is unreasonable. 5) Swim instructors do not / refuse to communicate feedback to parents and students 6) I have the perception that swim instructors have a conflict of interest--i.e. it is in their interest to fail students so that they receive more sign ups and more money 7) Repeat failures for kids this young becomes a self-esteem / morale issue. 8) Swim instructors are subjective in their grading. 9) Swim instructors are not paying that close attention to student performance, yet are making snap calls if they pass or fail. read more

Rec center with a couple baseball fields, and turf soccer/football fields. There are two outdoor basketball courts, they are triple-rimmed though. And there are two tennis courts outside. Lights for all of these until 11pm during summer and parts of spring/fall I believe. There's an indoor center with a pool, hot tub, and sauna. Also there's studios for dance and yoga as well as a few racquetball courts and a pretty good weight room. read more

:::Baby & Me Swim Review We are taking a swim class with our 9 month old. The instructors are fantastic! Warm, friendly, immediately established the expectation of what babies will get out of the course. Goal acclimation to water and maybe some small kicks. ;0) The class has be perfect for us. Mom, Dad, Grandma can participate... It can be more than one parent in the water with baby. I've noticed that typically one parent participates and the other will sit out to take the pictures. Check-in -No stress. Just flash your pass. The Pool -The pool area is warm. The water not so much. Ironically, the babies acclimate faster than this mom did. Locker Rooms -Clean and does offer two private changing areas. There always seems to be a lot going on at South Run. From artisan fairs to Girl Scout troops bake sales. This rec center has a warm community vibe where there is a little something for everyone. read more

Wonderful place! We are taking swim class for our toddler and the instructor is so friendly and personable. Lockers rooms are kept clean for a busy public place. I love how they have option for family changing room etc which gives me comfort. Also they put a sign to prohibit taking pictures etc which makes me feel relieved because we are little out of our comfort zone with changing clothes etc. Pool area is maintained well and signage for open pool etc is presentable. Lifeguard is always on duty. We haven't checked out the fitness side of the facility yet but it appears to be busy at all times. read more

I went to South Run to look for a gym for my 76 year old father, where he would be able to work out, while not being in a "grunt-and'yell" gym environment. South Run is a nice looking facility, with lots of outdoor space, multiple multi-use sports fields, and a field house. Parking looks like it could get pretty tight sometimes. The building itself is a little dated, but then again it's a community rec center. The staff were all very welcoming, and took their time to give us a comprehensive tour, from the spin room to the 2-story weight/fitness machine room, to the walk-in pool to the HUGE therapy hot tub to whatever else I forgot to mention. 50+ drop-in classes every week...I'd go. read more

This review is for the pool only. Probably one of the best rec center pools in the Fairfax area. I went to the Lee District and Audrey Moore pools and South Run is my favourite. I mainly go to rec centers for lap swimming lanes and pools. South Run always has open lanes for lap swimming, especially on weekends. The center is not that busy either, which is great if you're looking for a quiet place to work out without having to worry about sharing lanes or having to end your workout because the lanes might close soon. Ladies showers have curtains and they have two changing rooms (one for mothers with babies and the other is for individuals with disabilities). read more

Don't come here for swim lessons. We purchased private swim lessons or our kid, and the instructor cancelled scheduled lessons twice the day of, citing a "family event" both times. After the second cancellation, I reached out to the lesson coordinator for a new instructor. The coordinator said it was "impossible" to get a new instructor. I then asked her to call me so we could sort this out, and she refused, saying she prefers to communicate over email. I then asked for a refund, and she never responded. I had to go in person and fill out a form to get my refund. The icing was I had to plead to not have a refund "fee" charged. If you have another option for lessons, use it. read more

So I give the playground itself FIVE STARS as it is shaded and nice area split for toddlers 2-5 and older kids 5-12 . HOWEVER... BEWARE when I went with my two year old only a handful of kids were there. AND ONE OLDER KID was causing havoc and basically running over the little kids who were on the "little playground" He was too big and the guardian didn't seem to care he should've been in the "big kid side". So obviously beware there are kids there out of control with little to NO MANNERS BC THE GUARDIANS ARE NOT CONTROLLING THEM. Not to mention I've been to a million playgrounds and always bring bubbles for my little one and the other kids to pop them. I pulled bubbles out and all the OTHER kids were running and popping them and then the ANNOYING OBNOXIOUS big kid came over said let me blow them. Not even a please or thank you. So I let him blow once. Then he proceeded to take off with the wand. I said please can I have back I'm blowing bubbles you can go pop them. He repeatedly like 25 times said can I blow I want to blow I want to blow them in my face I just continued to ignore him. People may shame me for bringing bubbles but I should be able to bring bubbles to enjoy with out being harassed by a out of control kid. The adult of this kid just stood by and let him continue to harass me and finally said let the mom blow bubbles. Like after the third or fourth time you should've come to get your child. AS HE WAS LITERALLY TRYING TO RIP IT FROM MY hand. Then after like five minutes I place my bubbles back into MY DIAPER bag with my phone on the bench where other parents have their bags and bottles as well. No biggie right? WRONG! This kid who I shall not name went over to my bag and said I want the bubbles and proceeded to grab them and also my phone in my bag. I was clearly irritated and could not enjoy my time with my daughter bc this kid. The guardian or gmaw I think sat on the bench at the other side saw it all and let it happen. SO eventually I looked at him sternly and said this is MY BAG MY BUBBLES MY PHONE DO NOT TOUCH THIS AND LEAVE IT ALONE. And finally the guardian called the kid over. I also said the bubbles are all gone He looked at me and said I want to see if the bubbles are really all gone. Like control your kids and have manners people. I would be horrified if my child did this. And he also wanted my phone and picked it up out of my pocket in the diaper bag. So just beware of out of control kids and some parents/guardians not really giving two craps about how they are to others sharing a public space. And to respect peoples space and belongings. Other than that the park was nice just couldn't enjoy bc of this one kid being a complete and total tyrant. They are lucky I didn't say anything to them to their face bc I was about to say come control your kid lady before I say something not nice get him out of my face and leave me alone. It's obvious this kid wears the pants in the family and gets away with everything. Hopefully this parent will learn to control the kid better (he wasn't just being a kid) so everyone can enjoy the space as my child and I came to do. read more

This is a great RECenter and probably my favorite one I've been to. The fields are great and well kept, the playground is fun and safe for all kids, and the indoor pool is a good activity for all ages. The hiking and dog park trails are a great jog or walk. If your looking for somewhere to spend your afternoon, the South Run RECenter is the place to go! read more

I have developed a burning hatred for this place since COVID started. We pay a lot of money for our family membership- we purchased the whole year just before COVID, so we're technically paying over a $100 a month right now for basically nothing. They have such limited recreational swim hours, and nothing about their reservation system prohibits families from taking every available slot and then not showing up. So we can NEVER get in. They used to have Monday hours and we came single week, but then they cut those- so now they only offer about 8 sessions a week, with a max of 16 people per session, and people can sign up for every single session if they happen to be the first to sign up when slots open. Also, they offer slots that non-members can pay for. That is some pure crap, when people who've paid for memberships can't get in, but non-members can. Generating revenue is clearly more important than loyal customer satisfaction. The other day I signed up for a rarely available lap swim spot for myself, and was super excited. It was a same-day sign up, but when I arrived at the pool they were closed- no sign, no explanation, nothing on their website, still taking reservations, but the door was locked. I can only assume it was because of the weather, but the weather wasn't even bad! A storm had been predicted but never materialized. And if they were concerned about people driving, perhaps they should put something on their website to discourage people from coming out and trying to make their reservations? These people clearly only take care of themselves. So, extremely limited pool hours, extremely limited equipment availability, no lessons or classes. It seems like this place has used COVID as an excuse to cut down on employees, cut services offered, and still keep all the money that they charged when they were operating at full capacity. Shame on them. read more

Aquatic (Pool) Experience: Pee Wee swim lessons disorganized - no consistent instructor and no show one week. Suggested re-enrollment in same class by random instructor due to lack of progression in that class. Parents left just as confused as children with actual class objectives (half the time spent by instructor chasing a wandering child from another part of the pool). No operational oversight of how classes are being run from parent perspective. When I did finally comment - I was told I should've asked for my money back. We elected for open swim to teach our children to swim. I recently delivered our 3rd child and cannot go in pool for 6 weeks. We brought a neighborhood friend with us to go in pool with our child (who can't swim) and were asked to leave and told "immediate" family are only allowed to work with children in the pool despite my disclosure of personal medical information. Very disappointed in a "community" center being so prohibitive during an open swim (in a nearly empty pool) yet more than uninvolved with their immediate staff/employees/swim instructors during group classes. read more

I had been a regular member for the last 4 or 5 years and love the place but today when I came in I find out that there is a special for new members of 60%!!!! But wait NEW MEMBERS ONLY!!!! We regular members that spend our money month after month get a slap in the face and have to pay the 100%!!!! That is so disrespectful! My family has been so disappointed in how this REC center has handled the COVID shut down. As longtime county residents and taxpayers, we were never kept apprised of the date and status of reopening. Just today the website FINALLY indicates the date of reopening as July 13. Aside from the fact that the staff has had more than enough time to prepare for reopening, having to wait another another 2 weeks doesn't seem reasonable. Our main problem is the communication -they had the exact same message on the phone for nearly 4 months ...."we are temporarily closed due to the coronavirus. See the ffx co website". If you spend 15 plus minutes navigating the poorly laid out county website, you get a sliver of info: CLOSED - reopening "sometime" during phase 3. Really? You can do better than that! And.....No sign with information on the doors - it feels like a real disservice to their patrons, we who pay their salaries. Things have been hard enough with the shutdown. The REC center didn't care enough about its clients to do any more than the bare minimum. Shame on them! read more

The staff here is great, it is very well run and clean. Also it is not a tacky pick -up gym like so many nearby. I feel a real sense of "Family" here. Some of the Aerobics teachers are very good, well trained, professional and friendly. The instructor who teaches Tuesday and WEDNESDAY IS AWESOME! Her classes are great! I like to do zumba, and stretching, South Run has the best classes for my needs. I really look forward to exercising at South Run. I cannot say that about the other Gyms I have belonged to in the area. read more

Simply child NOT friendly swimming pool. They keep it way to cool and staff is less than friendly, plainly rude on several occasions. They don't know their own policies. Today tried charging me for a child two years old and four. Their own policy states four and under are free. It pays off driving to Mount Vernon or even a Lee Rec. Oak Mar has much better vibe. Don't give up on recenters if you didn't have a great experience at SouthRun, just try another location! read more

At the risk of making this place more popular, I have to say SRRC is a less-discovered gem. The staff are great, the members very considerate, the place clean, the sauna and pool perfect in temperature. But best of all, it's never crowded, I never wait to get a machine or a swim lane, and it's not a noisy, fleshy zoo. Weekends are busier, but not jammed. Parking easily available and walking trails start at the center. They offer free drop in sessions on many types of conditioning or work out, or try other fee based classes. If there is a downside, it's that they do close on major holidays since tied to Fairfax County schedule and that if you want loud music blasting building-wide the whole time you're there, you'll be disappointed. They do have TVs on workout rooms walls but they run silently. I guess you can plug audio into one's headset if desired.
