We just recently had our fence, retaining wall, and gate replaced by Gary and his crew (which consists of his son and dad!). Even though it took some time to lock down an appointment, we couldn't have been more impressed with Gary's work. As the owner, Gary will actually be the one doing the work (from demolition, to digging new posts, and nailing down the actual fence). Hence this won't be a subcontracting job where the owner just comes around to inspect quality. He is there from start to finish. Please give Gary a call if you need any work done around the yard. Keep in mind that he is only one person - responsible for fielding calls, responding to emails, generating new quotes, and then the work. So a little patience will go a long way as you will be getting very high quality work for a very genuine, fair, and honest price. read more

Gary just built an amazing gate for the side access at my house. I gave Gary a terrible description of what I wanted and somehow he used what I said and built a gate better than I could have imagined. Sousa Fencing is my family's #1 choice! Gary built fences in 2 of my brothers homes. 1 of them needed to be done ASAP so the dogs didn't get out and Gary made it his number 1 priority. My parents had Gary build a redwood deck and even when my picky mom changed her mind about the railing Gary was back out there the next day changing it to whatever she wanted. When I called Gary for an estimate he was over the next day to take measurements and I had a great price right away. He was nice enough to let me know that he was working on a couple big jobs that required a lot his attention, so he asked if we could push my gate out a couple weeks so he would have more time to focus on it, which was completely fine with me. He showed up to my house with his team as scheduled and started the gate. In just a few days the gate was done and looked great. Gary even recommended a stain to keep the gate looking brand new. A horrible experience with Sousa Fencing. They replaced a fence shared with a neighbor and ended up doing substandard work on my side with angles that jutted out. Even though both sides shared the cost of this fence, the completed fence was not to the specs we had all had agreed to. Additionally, the fenceline was uneven and the irrigation hose in the soil below the fence was torn in a couple places. We ended up having to hire another fence guy to fix everything. Be careful with this company. I found the owner of the company confrontational and very difficult to communicate with. No recommendation here. read more

Don't waste your time, unless you like your time wasted. I chose Sousa Fencing based on the rave reviews on yelp and also because he's a local contractor. Two months after selecting Sousa to replace my fence, the work was still not started so my neighbor and I had decided to use a different contractor. Gary committed to doing the work four different times and did not show up once. Twice he called in the morning and said he'd be there later in the morning. No show both times. Twice he called back several days later to reschedule it for a future date. This is very unprofessional and reflects badly on him and his business. SHOCKINGLY, INCREDIBLY RUDE, SCREAMED AT ME (yes, literally!) I can see why there are other bad reviews. I can't imagine how they stay in business when they literally YELL at customers! We had a proposal done. I called to schedule. They called back to tell me they couldn't honor it because the bid had been done several months back. Fine. I said, Okay, can you come out and give us another proposal? She said No! I asked why and she went into a rant, raising her voice at me. I asked calmly, "Why are you yelling at me?" She then, absolutely THREW A FIT. She was literally SCREAMING AT ME into the phone. I couldn't get a word in. I don't even remember what she was saying because she was so out of control. SHOCKING. I was calm and polite the entire time. There's NO WAY a company can treat customers like that and survive. BE WARY!! read more

My terrible experience mirrors similar negative experiences written here (including many deemed 'not currently recommended'). I was originally slated for an around 8am replacement today, June 19th. I called Sousa Fencing's main number listed here, merely to get an update on estimated arrival time at 9am, an hour after originally scheduled time. No biggie on being late, I just wanted to know estimated time to plan around it. I call and ask for an ETA an hour+ after I was told Sousa would arrive. Lady tells me she she have no idea where installers are once they leave for the day, but that she'll call Gary. Sounds good. She asks for my name, I respond and dually give her the property address; I tell her I'm renting and have a realtor/property manager so it might be under their name. [The conversation quickly becomes confrontational, apparently because I contacted Sousa directly in lieu of property manager] She points out they don't deal with realtors (who is also the property manager). Seems irrelevant to pull a work order doesn't it? :-/ She: 'Why on earth did you contact us instead of the property manager?!' Me: Huh? [I think to myself 'Property Mgmt closed but why does this matter'?] She says, 'Are you the one cutting the check for me to be PAID?!' Me: No, I'm not [I think to myself 'I'm the one living where the fence is to be installed. Is this a matter of whether you will get paid or not?']. She: 'The name of the work order is in the name of the homeowner but how would you know that?!' Nauseous, unnecessary conversation just to get a simple ETA. In the end, I told her I'm sorry she's having a bad day. She hung up on me. Heh! I wasn't expecting this interaction this morning. Odd, Accusatory Customer Service! I used Sousa Fencing to replace several feet of fence in my back yard last fall. The fence has held up well for the last 10 months, but an additional job I paid for was to put up a small gate and that didn't work out so well. I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the gatepost had pulled away from the house. So I called them today and asked them what they could do about it. I asked about flashing and I thought that maybe it should have been "attached to the wall" along with some flashing. Gary came by and looked at it and moved the latch to compensate for the gate now not closing. He then called me and left a slightly angry message on my answering machine that what I didn't know was that "... you don't need flashing if its not attached to the wall." Well that's my point! Why didn't they attach the gate to the wall? That question was answered by the woman who answers the phones: "Since Gary noticed that the latch had been moved and someone else moved it, I had voided all my warrantee to the gate." I did move the latch last spring, since the gate wouldn't close. I didn't think that calling a fence company to come out and move the latch would have been that big of a deal. Now that I see that the gate was never attached to the wall is rather disappointing that this is the way they handle it. The last comment from Gary was that I should have "... had some hole work done" (to keep it attached.) If they are the experts, why didn't they attach it or at least recommend it in the first place. BEWARE SOUSA FENCING CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! LOOK AT ALL OF THEIR YELP REVIEWS PRIOR TO HIRING SOUSA FENCING. Sousa Fencing is the worst company with no customer service. I was away with family and my neighbors wanted to put up a new fence because they just bought the house and wanted to beautify everything. Our neighbors hired Sousa Fencing without notice to us or our permission. Sousa Fencing tore down our entire fence, leaving our front and side yard exposed to any person coming down my street. They did not provide a barrier even though they were not planning on coming back for another 3 days. They also removed our exterior front fence without notification or agreement on our behalf. The front fence was not required to be removed, nor were they given permission to enter our property. After fencing was completed, I noticed an electrical cord hanging over the fence from my neighbor's yard to an outlet on our house. I called Sousa Fencing and asked for a manager or supervisor regarding this situation. The woman who answered the phone (whom I found out was the wife of the owner) told me she could help me. I explained the situation that I did not hire them and my neighbors did. I told her that the fence was not in any condition requiring replacement, it was just for vanity purposes that they wanted a new fence. For no reason at all, rather than discussing the complaint or trying to understand it, she started yelling at me and berating me over the phone, telling me I didn't pay for it and was legally bound to pay half. I told her that I never hired them and that my neighbors did and it was not required for me to pay for a fence since it was not a hazard. She was not professional at all, she was berating, argumentative and rude. I would never recommend Sousa Fencing to anyone. If they did hire Sousa Fencing, I would be very concerned how they would treat their customers since her lack of listening and communicating was so horrible. Rather than providing a simple apology, she started yelling at me and telling me that she has every legal right to come 5 feet onto our property. Our plug is 15 feet from the fence. All of what she spouts out is not legal. There was no contract signed on our behalf. The fence was NOT a hazard, therefore, it was HIGHLY ILLEGAL for Sousa Fencing to come on our property. They also trespassed to illegally use our electricity without our permission or EVEN ASKING! read more

One day two men appeared unannounced in my backyard and began cooking tortillas over their burner. Wow, really? Yes, really. I yelled through the glass that I was going to call the police and they yelled back that they represent Sousa. They left and didn't fix the gate latch. I called Sousa to advise of what had happened asking that they fix their faulty gate latch installation. Tina screamed and screamed. Called me a liar. Refused to allow me to speak with Gary, who was in the background of the call asking questions. Gary is great. Tina may possibly be the undoing of this company. read more

Unfortunately, I was quite disapointed with my experience with Sousa Fencing. At the Home Show, we were very impressed with their family-style business and was looking forward to working with them. We called and scheduled an appointment and then.... he never showed up. He called a little after he was suppose to be at our house and said that he would not be able to make it out to give us a quote. So, whatever, things happen! So we rescheduled for another date. We went and told our neighbors about the appointment, so they could be there as well when he came. Again, he called the day and hour he was supposed to be at our home and said he had to cancel. At that point, we were very frustrated and told him to forget it. It was obvious he was too busy or not serious about the work we were offering him. We hired Gary and his team again, this time to build us a patio and retaining wall. Gary offered suggestions based on what we needed and the contemporary look we were trying to achieve. Gary installed a steel I-beam and pressure treated board retaining wall that is doing the job of holding back our upper yard, and he designed and built a Trex patio. Both look amazing! The quality of work and craftsmanship are above and beyond, and Gary achieved the look we were going for perfectly. There were some problems with the time it took to complete the job - Gary lost some of his crew and ended up doing most of the job with just himself. At times he had the help of two other workers. If you don't mind a slower pace but value quality craftsmanship, Gary Sousa is the contractor for you. I would (and already plan to) hire him again. read more

I just finished redoing what Gary did. It took 4 days of hard labor of my step-daughter, my wife, and I, people who had never touched fencing before and never knew how to do it. It took me buying equipment and timber, but we did it. Gary straightened my fence. It was OK to straighten it. It was of quite funny shape. I even had talked to my neighbor before this all, and we agreed that some bits of her land would go to me and some bits of my land would go to her, so we stay even and fence becomes straight. Well, Gary cut off 10-15 sq. yards of my land, of very pricy Bay Area land that I'm to pay mortgage for for years and years. To be fair, Gary did ask whether it was OK to straighten it, and, once again, it was OK. Just not the way he did. Why would a reasonable man who works with fences professionally, would assume that home owner would give up a piece of land? Gary refused to move fence, he wanted the same amount of money I already paid for the job, person on phone, I guess, his wife said that I had "buyer remorse" and after a couple of phone calls stopped picking up the phone. I entertained for a while a possibility to go to small claims court, but decided that it was going to cost me more than just fixing a fence myself. On a bright side I know that I can build fence myself and when my front-yard fence needs replacement, which is in 3-5 years, I will not have to hire a contractor, just will do it myself. By the way, this order would definitely go to Gary if not for all this. read more

We had a shared fence replaced by Sousa Fencing last year and the experience was "ok" at best. Sousa fencing started the project without our authorization and left us without a fence for a day, without even telling us they were starting. I was incredibly frustrated by the attitude that the owner took with us about the whole thing, but they gave us a discounted rate and the fence looked fine when it was completed. Not a great experience, but good enough. Fast forward to about a year later and we need a gate replaced. I call them again and setup a time for the owner to come give us a quote. He flakes on that appointment and calls a few hours later to tell me he needed to come later. He finally comes and has some strange excuse for being so late and takes a weird attitude about the entire thing. He clearly did not want to be there and made that known. I got the quote and after a few weeks decided to hire them to do the work. I emailed them and never heard back. Called and left a voicemail and never heard back. I finally got an email from the office manager saying they were booked but that I would hear back from them shortly. A few weeks go by. Nothing. I email them again and don't hear anything back. I have emailed them several times over the course of the last 2 months and cannot get them to return my emails. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this company. They are rude, confrontational and clearly don't understand customer service. They may do fine work, but getting them to do it will be a headache. read more

I personally gave contact information to the "old man," while he was at a neighbor's house. I told him I have a collapsing fence on my property line that needs to be replaced. Two weeks later, I got a call to arrange an estimate. Someone came out, took a look, and emailed me an estimate, with the price being "depending on options." I replied via email a few times with questions, but I never received a response. They also refused to answer questions posed by my insurance company, who tried repeatedly to get more information. I can't recommend a company who pulls the "drops off of the face of the earth" act. If they don't want my money, I'll give it to someone else. read more

Terrible and rude! Had booked an appointment over the phone for Gary to come and do a quote. For me, working in Law Enforcement I have a crazy schedule and not much consistant time off..so people showing up when scheduled is important to me. I even called day before to ask how much they charge per square foot and reminded the lady who answers they were coming. So Gary was a no show, no call. I left a message when I got off work the next day..expressing that I was not happy with them for flaking out. The call back I got was not an apology but a rude woman telling me that she was suprised that I was calling the day after to complain and that I was sarcastic..Really?? Didn't you guys not show up as scheduled and waste my time? So i told her not to call me anymore..and she called back my phone 3 more times and left me messages.. yelling..So I'm glad because if they had done work for me and this is what I needed to deal with, it would have been worse. Disappointing. Gary came out and did an estimate, I liked he and his Yelp reviews so I told him I'd contract with him in 2 or 3 weeks when we were ready. Unfortunately he didn't respond to any of my phone calls so I ended up going with another company. If things change after a 2 week period fine, but please just let me know so I don't waste another 2 weeks or more waiting to hear back and then scheduling someone else, it's frustrating. It seems from the reviews others have had the same non responsive experience as I did. Too bad, as I really hate posting a sub-par review but it is what it is. read more

Pretty Bad Experience. 1) Dint complete the work on time. 2) Left my backyard in mess. They promised to cleanup but never did. In fact garry lied to me.When i called him from my work. he said he is right in my backyard and with a blower and would clean up immediately. when i came home the mess was still there. such a BIG liar. 3) Had an unfinished job. Asked them to punch in extra plank in one corner which he acknowledged and promised to fix it but never did. 4) I repeatedly told those folks to not to step on the water dripping system and told them if it happens to be on the way please move it. They dint and stamped on it all over and now my dripping system is damaged. 5) Their proposal/estimate lead to big confusion. Ended up paying abt $115 more than what was mentioned in proposal. I've now had the pleasure of working with Gary, and seeing the results of Sousa Fencing work, on three different projects. (Three fencing sections, shared by three different neighbors!) I'm pretty sure Gary and crew, i.e. Sousa Fencing, do NOT work in San Mateo, so I'm doubtful the really crappy review from Michael B. pertains to Sousa Fencing based in Dublin. But I digress... Very good quality work. Very good communication, and I'm not the easiest person to reach! Reasonable prices too. That all adds up to VALUE, and that's my consumer criteria #1. I have two dogs, and Gary has always been very diligent to let me know when the work will be underway, so I can pen up the dynamic duo. :) Good fences make good neighbors, and Sousa Fencing makes good fencing, so don't fret about contacting your neighbors to get this sort of work scheduled. I had Sousa Fencing come out a few years ago to replace our boarder fence between our neighbors. They were great, fast and easy to work with. Took two payments (mine and the neighbors) which was really nice. I did not write a review back then. I am writing a review now because I called Sousa Fencing to come out to help with my front gate. They did not install the front fence nor the gate. My gate was not opening all the way, probably due to normal expansion etc. I asked if they could come out and take a look when they were in the area. I know that fixing a gate is not a huge job and as such would be best as an add on when in the area. Gary called me when he was in the area and since it was an easy fix, he fixed on the spot. I was not home and I left my little dog in the back mistakenly. He was able to calm my dog down and keep him in the yard all while detaching the gate entirely and reattaching to remedy the issue. Gary was more than fair with the price, it took him very little time and as such, he did not charge much at all. He is obviously fair and understanding YAY! read more

I had my fence and gates around my whole house replaced a couple months ago and I must say Gary and his team were did a fantastic job! They don't use Home Depot wood, you get the good quality wood! They were very reliable said they would be here and were! Whenever I called he answered of called me right back. This guy Gary is terrible. His wife took the number for the appointment, but by morning the next day, he called and said he had some trouble at the dump. Then I said, "no problem, I'll just wait for you. Then I waited and waited and waited, no show no phone call. Then I called him and left a message. Then he texted back and said he had trouble with his truck. Then I tried to call him but as soon as he knew it was me he hanged up the phone. I texted him but he would not return my text. He clearly didn't want my business for whatever reason, which would have been ok as long as he was upfront with me, but it clearly looked to me like he was stringing me along by cooking up excuses in order not to do business with me. Sousa Fencing just completed the fence my neighbor and I share. This neighbor is very, very difficult on absolutely everything and I didn't think I would ever get this project underway. I went ahead and hired Sousa (mostly based in favorable Yelp reviews) and figured I would pay for the total job myself. Gary worked some kind of magic and got this neighbor to cooperate, get the fence built and pay his half. The fence and gate look just great and Gary and his crew were very professional. Gary came out to estimate a job for my neighbor and I. We needed the common fence replaced and various other things on both of our properties. Gary measured it off, asked the right questions and had estimates for both of us in about 20 minutes. We were suitably impressed and made an appointment to get the work done. Even though the weather was bad for days before our job was to begin, Gary and his crew showed up on time and finished right on schedule. The work was quite nice and the price reasonable. All in all, his crew is very professional. I would not hesitate to recommend them. Not so with the other two companies we tried to deal with. read more
