Been here in Germany for five months now and I've been craving Vietnamese food. There are quite a…read morefew Vietnamese restaurant in Berlin but I was only able to try this one since I was only there for two days. I had Pho soup, sushi and my friend had this stir fry dish. The taste was true to its flavors. And the prices were low. We got the sushi special but I think on a regular basis they are expensive. The place was very casual, small and almost felt like a fast food place. Nonetheless I would go back here for Pho.

Berlin's Vietnamese mad!!!…read more It wasn't exactly an enthusiastic "yeah" when Vietnamese was mentioned. I had more robust food on my mind, but decided to go with the flow. Berlin has an Asian eatery or five dressing its Straßen and Kantstr is no different. It was busy, you'd expect that on Reunification day - a public holiday here in Germany, but a table was found in this clean and welcoming restaurant. So the menus were perused, our orders placed and we sat back and waited for our taste buds to be thrilled. It's pretty cheap here and my 5 pork skewers with rice noodles and crisp salad was only €6.50 and R's tofu with rice was only €5. We opted for Vietnamese spring rolls (3 types - prawn, pork and veg with a chilli & fish sauce) to start and all 3 dishes were more than edible, although I heard from over the table that the tofu dish was a little too sweet. Our menus were in German, but I believe there are English menus available. In all this place is pretty good, but I wouldn't hurry back, but maybe that's because I'm not Vietnamese food mad :-/

I have eaten so many Vietnamese dishes in the past months that I feel that my standard of…read moreVietnamese food is pretty high now. I have read all the reviews on here but have a hard time understanding the positive reviews. The restaurant is clean and the staff is friendly. The food is truly served fast - as the name "fastfood" indicates. The juices are great and creative but the food is so bland and for being so bland the prices are not justified. I had a chicken pho and it was just not tasty and the chicken actually tasted pretty disgusting. I had a hard time finishing the pho. I also enjoy summer rolls but they were dry and the taste of them were also not enjoyable or at least not the way I am used to it. I believe that it is mass produced and not cooked with "love". I much rather prefer other places and will not return. I also like places that provide options for children. This place has only large portions, which means that children are not able to get a small kids portion. Hence, we ordered an extra bowl for our daughter, so we could share our pho with her. But the waiter, despite not being busy at all, forgot that we ordered an extra bowl with our order and had to be reminded. Not a big deal but also a reason why I chose to give it a total of 3 stars only.

Anyway, the place was extremely convivial, and one feels like entering a stube in a friendly Austrian village. Old furniture and knick-knacks add to the charm which seems real rather than contrived. We went on a Tuesday night, when they had a really special deal of unlimited Austrian Wiener Backhendel und Brathendel-Schmaus mit Beilage und Salat for less than 10 Euro. Both are actually chicken dishes and they were indeed good. It's simple food but it is simple food done very well. As the wine list is non-existent, we ended up drinking rather a lot of beer which suited the chicken anyway. Again, I have to say that the owner and his wife were really very friendly and service was great (not fast, but great). And once the initial plates were down, then things went along much more smoothly. All in all, a great place to try traditional Austrian chicken in Berlin. I am sure their other Austrian dishes would also be good but I don't know. But their chicken is pretty darn good!

Our Austrian host recommended an apricot schnaps to finish with and it was really good. Can definitely recommend to anyone looking for a genuine Austrian place.
