I came to David about a year ago with what I imagine is a pretty familiar story: I taught myself…read morewhen I was younger, but it didn't click, and now I want to learn for real. I wasn't expecting much, as I took my failure to learn previously as evidence I just wasn't very talented. Now, with a year of lessons and practice under my belt, I've made more progress than I thought possible. I never thought I could get good enough to solo, and now I can play and improvise solos pretty well in multiple keys. I can write chord progressions and songs, and my understanding and enjoyment of music in general has skyrocketed. In addition to teaching you songs, chords, and scales, David makes sure you understand the underlying music theory at the heart of music. This was the "aha!" moment for me, understanding that intervals between sounds are the basis for all music. Now when I sit down to play, I have a good understanding of where I want my chords/melodies/solos to go next, as opposed to banging out chords and hoping they sound cool. If you've been wondering if you have what it takes to play, go see David, he'll get you there.

I learned so much theory so quickly - I was shocked. The book she wrote that accompanies her lessons is nothing less than brilliant. She incorporates theory heavily into her lessons, but knows that having fun and being creative in your practice is just as important! I also remember having a particularly hard time in college once and it was really showing up in my practice and lessons - Susan really validated what I was going through and helped me navigate that time with so much compassion and kindness. I'll never forget it. You won't regret hiring Susan to learn guitar at any age, experience level or time in your life!

It was May, and I had an upper division jury at the end of the summer. My college professors gave me several things to work on, and I needed to find a teacher who could help me improve on those points within an extremely short, three month time span. I decided to start online lessons with Susan. Immediately after our first lesson, I felt supported by how specific she was in her weekly lesson plan. I was given very concrete things to work on each week, and I was encouraged to send recordings in between lessons and ask if I was grasping the concepts properly. Susan also has the perfect balance of praise and criticism. Study after study shows that people learn and improve more when they're encouraged. There aren't enough instructors in the world that understand how to make students feel supported while also helping them move towards their goals. Susan is a rare breed in that she does just that. She also gave me advice and tools on managing my performance anxiety. I ended up passing my upper division jury, and my professors commented on how much I'd improved. Even if I didn't pass my jury, I would have still given Susan a glowing testimonial because she is the best teacher I've ever had. I will forever be changed by Susan's teaching.

The combination of Andy's ability to help you grow in the technical and psychological aspects of improving your singing and his artful and skillful piano accompaniment (transposing on the fly into whatever key works best for you!), adds up to a great experience. I often push myself to go to a lesson, feeling tired after a long day at work, and leave feeling so much better physically and mentally. We laugh a lot while we work! I appreciate that Andy works with you to achieve your goals, and he will push you to stretch to make progress, but he's fundmentally there to hlep you get what you want from your lessons--the kind of music you want to sing, whether you want to perform, when you want to push yourself on technique and when you want to just relax and sing. And he realizes all that may change week to week and evolve over time. Perhaps the strongest proof of the trust I have in Andy and the growth I've experienced working with him over the years is that improvising is an incredbly vulnerable thing for me to do--mistakes, wrong notes, falling off the edge of the tune, eek! And I regularly improvise now at my lessons and it brings me a special kind of happiness to able to experiment, play, create beauty, and express myself. I'm grateful to be able to learn from and make music with Andy.

It had been about 5 years since I last played my clarinet and I decided I wanted to start up again…read more My instrument needed an overhaul repair, BADLY. After doing some research online, I found Granlund Woodwind Repair. The owner, Scott Granlund, had a lot of recommendations from professional musicians in Seattle, so I decided his business seemed reputable enough for me to give him a shot. The shop is a bit confusing to find. It's a single room workshop located behind Clever Bottle in Belltown, and I mean literally. You actually have to enter the bar and walk through a door in the back to get to the place. The shop itself, though cluttered wall to wall with instruments, parts, and tools, is charming. Scott immediately plopped my instrument on a table and appraised the work needing to be done. He wrote up an estimate, told me it would take about a month and a half to completed everything, and I was in and out in about 10 minutes. Now I ran into problems when it came to the estimated time of completion. Though Scott had told me 6 weeks, 6 weeks turned into 8, which turned into 10. I was getting a bit frantic, but after several sessions of phone tag and some tense emails, we arranged a time for pick up. Overall, I was pretty happy with the repairs. His quality and craftsmanship were very good and I could definitely feel the difference when I started to play. It's a shame it took so long to have everything done, however. I would have given him 5 stars if it wasn't for that fact.
