Preferring to support a local independent business rather than the FTD service model, I gave them a price, a general idea of what I wanted, and a great deal of latitude in putting together an appropriate arrangement. The employee who assisted me was very helpful, courteous, and professional. Unfortunately, the arrangement did not appear to be worth the price I agreed to pay. I presumed there may have been some kind of mistake and contacted the owner. I was disappointed when her initial and immediate reaction was a defensive posture, but hoped that if I sent her a photo of the arrangement she might see things a little differently. She did not. She again defended the value of the arrangement. I set to task confirming my instincts with actual data by creating and emailing her a spreadsheet with a breakdown of each stem in the arrangement, the wholesale price of the arrangement, and based on the percentage markup of a comparable arrangement with FTD, what I felt was a fair price for the flowers. Rather than look at the spreadsheet I had spent considerable time compiling and actually responding to it directly, Michelle, the proprietor, lost her shit and started putting words in my mouth. But they were absolute nonsense. She said I was telling her she had a "shady business" which is not true and absolutely ridiculous. What I told her was that she was overpriced. If you're more expensive (and by a large degree) than FTD, you're too fricking expensive. She told me I was "extremely offensive," when in fact, I'd put considerable effort into confirming my general suspicion that I'd been overcharged and was never anything but polite in my communications with her. You don't need to take my word for it. I have copied links below to both the chain of communication, except the initial very brief phone conversation in which Michelle was also quite bristly, and the spreadsheet I compiled to calculate a reasonable estimate of value of the services rendered.
