Interesting Chinese herbal pills for a multitude of ailments. Just ask.

It seems that Mesa AZ is a great place to go to explore Far East culture. After eating an excellent, authentic Chinese meal next door, our curiosity got the better of us, and we timidly entered Sonya Market to see what exactly this was about. My first impression was the exotic, wonderful herbal smell that I associate undeniably with Chinatown, San Francisco. A quick glance around revealed shelves upon shelves filled with Chinese herbs, teas, medicinal products, jars filled with ugly fungus, personal products, candies, and snacks, very few of which I was familiar. I was warmly greeted by the wonderful owners, Sonya and her husband, whose name, unfortunately, I have forgotten. His personal story includes moving their young family from Southern California to Mesa AZ and opening this business for Sonya, while maintaining his own IT business. He immediately took me under his wing and escorted me down their many aisles, explaining the purpose for many of their products. A small table and 2 chairs were set next to the front counter, and this was where Sonya was seated, pouring rich black tea from a pretty teapot into small tea cups while chatting with her customer/friend in the other chair. The most fascinating display for me was the multiple shelves holding rows of huge, lidded glass jars. Each jar was labeled and contained some exotic-named (and very pricey) dried root, mushroom, or dried sea critter, each with a specific purpose in Chinese apothecary and cuisine. Their extensive knowledge and enthusiasm was quite palpable and made our visit a whole lot of fun. I ended up selecting a 16 oz bag of a dried, orangy root, similar to ginsing called Radix Fici Hirtae, for making a healthful tea that supposedly has a nice fruity fragrance and pleasant taste, or used as an ingredient for making a delicious chicken or pork broth with ginger. I can hardly wait to make some, even though I am somewhat clueless exactly how it should be done. It can't be all that hard, now can it? Sonya market also has an online business that will ship their products to you. For such a small shop, an hour whizzed by quite quickly. Thank you for your warm hospitality and time, making this a very memorable visit for me and my daughter.

I completely cleared a shelf off just for everything that I bought so far, now I just need to get at all nice, organized, I'm pretty.

Such an amazing place and experience. I've met so many great and good hearted people. I'm still learning, Sonya is very helpful and has the best and friendliest information.

I happened upon this awesome little mom no' pop run by Florence and her husband. They are originally from the motherland, Ghana. They opened up this shop to offer authentic African and Caribbean foods, items and clothing. Florence welcomed me loudly with a big smile, giving me a personal tour if the store and it's unique items such as smoked shrimp, fufu, matching hair wraps / face mask combos, real Shea butter, black soap etc. We talked a bot and realize that we have friends im common. Small world. I would recommend everyone come in and take a gander at all the cool items, authentic American herbs and food items. She is the #1 provider of authentic Shea butter and has legit black soap. This business is a great asset to the community and Florence is active in improving the area. ......
