But the…read moreadministration is awful, specifically one of the VPs and the principal who seams to know everyone's name but isn't really anyone's pal. They fail to force out bad teachers. They marginalize advanced kids who don't fit into their cookie-cutter curriculum. They don't give counselors enough authority, so every request that's out-of-the-ordinary is a 3 month undefined process that can be vetoed at any time. They pay lip service to "caring for and respecting the individual," but they're committed to preserving the status quo at the expense of the individual -- except when IEPs for delayed kids require individual accommodation; then no expense is too great and no exception is too unreasonable. If your kid is precocious and defines themselves by something other than a varsity sport, then do your family a favor and check out concurrent enrollment options through community college and an online charter school like Colorado Preparatory Academy (CPA). CPA gives your kid unrestricted access to sit-down community college classes, and the State pays for it. The courses are taught by instructors who hold at least a Masters in their field, and the courses count toward college. Also, those courses count as two high school semesters for each one college semester: so double high school credit. Your kid can earn enough State-funded college credits to enter CU, CSU, Mines, or Metro as a college junior while still participating in activities through Vista or any other high school. My kids took advantage of that wonderful option and have never been happier or more engaged.

There are great teachers who genuinely care and are engaged, wonderful sports programs, and an overall supportive environment. Since Mt. Vista has an official STEM degree, they also have great facilities and equipment that offer kids unique and fun learning opportunities. Good kids overall, well mannered and come from solid homes. I highly recommend over the other High Schools in the area.

Let me start by saying the staff and kids were very friendly and, as we were there for my sons…read morebasketball game, we felt welcome. PTA and parent volunteers were great as well. Even the coaches that filled in for missing referees were unbiased and great to the opposing players. Now, the reason for the 3 stars. The building is old and dark, giving the feeling of a prison. Very few windows and lots of concrete blocks and bricks. Bathrooms closed due to vandalism (signs on the doors saying so,) Very narrow hallways and just doesn't seem like a great facility to send your kids to, considering the school facilities in the area. Not sure what you do with an old facility, other than tear it down and build something more conducive to learning and keeping kids in for 7 hours a day.

Being an Araphoe High School grad myself , and by way of virtue, I initially was forced to condemn those that walked its halls. Due to renovations at the Arapahoe pool, I was forced to conduct today's practice at Heritage, our main rival. Tom, the Heritage coach, was more than accommodating for the free pool time. HHS no longer uses salt as a cleaning agent and has replaced salt with chlorine. Huge improvement, I'll take green hair over puke anyday. Other than that, I find Heritage to be an architectual nightmare for kids to be able to enjoy learning. I fear that if I answered a trig question wrong, a Dept. of Corrections officer would come and tase me. Don't tase me bro!!! So kudos to those that graduated, especially the one's without permanent psychological damage.

Our child is absolutely THRIVING at Mackintosh and has become a more confident person since…read morestarting at Mack over a year ago. Like many kids, my son was apprehensive about changing schools, but within a month he realized that he was where he belonged, and now he tries to spend every extra minute he can at school attending before or after school clubs. The International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum is an excellent basis for in-depth education and exploration, but the true strength of Mackintosh is the amazing teaching faculty and staff. All of the teachers seem to love their jobs and their students and with the low student/teacher ratios, the teachers truly know the kids and how to elicit their best thinking and work. Like all learners, gifted students have strengths and weaknesses, and the teachers are able to offer broad enrichment to support a student's strengths as well as support and scaffolding for a student's challenge areas. They are able to support a learner who may be three years ahead in math, but who finds writing a struggle. The teachers are willing to differentiate instruction and assignments and meet students where they are and gently push them to grow and believe in their abilities. Some more things that I love about the school: amazing grade-level theatrical performances, multi-day nature-based field trips for the older grades, outside lunch as weather allows, and a well-rounded curriculum that includes PE every day, plus either performing or visual arts every day and a period every day that is split between Spanish some days and design others. I wish more kids could experience a Mackintosh education. I saw some comments about bullying. I am not personally aware of any bullying at the school, and I haven't had any parents share any bullying experiences with me. Also, I haven't experienced any "cliques" among the parents. Everyone seems very nice and genuine. If you have a gifted learner who would benefit from a warm, enriching, education, we strongly recommend that you consider Mackintosh Academy.

Maria Cardona was in charge of creating from scratch the curriculum for a handful of kids for a few years. My daughter improved in her writing and reading comprehension a lot. The topics covered during all those years touched on many areas so I'm very appreciative of Maria Cardona's creative curriculum and patience throughout those years. We also had very good experiences with all classes, from advanced math, to art, and everything in between. I'm sure that will be key for my daughter's high school and college future
