It took us awhile to forgive Samgyupsalamat. At their Kapitan Tikong branch months ago, we were…read morevery unsatisfied with the tough meat they served us. We used to be regular customers there so we knew our meat. Our visit at this new branch redeemed us as regular customers again. We were so happy to be surprised by the extra space they have at the back; you'd think the branch is small if you only took a peek from the outside. It was a bit warm at first but they adjusted the aircon later on. Walls were painted black even in the restroom. Overall place looked simple and had that hole-in-the-wall vibe. Cleaning the front windows looks necessary though it amusingly matches the restaurant vibe. Service was good since they always got what we needed at fair waiting times. Refills came back loaded with food and the water pitcher really kept the service water cold. The free veggie leaves, dips, side dishes, steamed egg, and soup were impressive to the eyes and tongue. Be careful with the steamed egg because the bowl was insanely hot! We ordered two meats ala carte and they were excellent both in texture and flavor! To the management team: Thank you for impressing us, and we can only hope and wish you maintain the good quality of your food and service. Forget what I said about the windows; they still pass! :p

Kang Ho Dong is a Korean ex-wrestler turned comedian. Due to a tax evasion scandal in 2011, he took a temporary hiatus from entertainment and focused on other ventures. His first U.S. restaurant Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong opened in L.A.'s KTown back in 2012. It's a very successful chain now, and today you can find locations all over like Sydney, Shanghai, and San Jose. I don't know if he's still affiliated with 678 Korean BBQ, but his name (강호동) and likeness is still used on signs and menus. This is not an AYCE kind of establishment, everything is a la carte. Prices are high, but still less expensive compared to the States. One strip of marinated short rib was ₱1350 or $23.86 USD; two strips of galbi are about $56.00 USD at their SoCal locations. The meat quality was fine, though some pieces were on the fattier side. Staff members will grill everything at the table. I did not like the rice, which was old and hard to chew. You will find 678 Korean BBQ at SM by the BAY, which is a dining area and amusement park by the water. It's a part of Mall of Asia, which is the largest mall in the Philippines and the sixth largest in the world. They have 2 dipping sauces (soy and spicey), lettuce available without extra charge, and your typical banchan. The waiters cook the food at the table for you, once they are done you need to flag them down if you need anything (additional drinks, meat, boxes, check) though the workers are just standing around.

I think the decision to switch over to Korean food really stems from the popularity of their Kimchi Fried Rice. They do offer a lot of other Korean rice meals and noodles but you can't beat the value of that Kimchi rice. First off, the serving size is really big. It's actually good enough for two. Second, it's really flavorful with just the right amount of heat from the kimchi. This means you could eat it by itself or pair it with one of the yummy dishes from Pan Asian. I personally like pairing it with the Honey BBQ buffalo wings of Chicken Licken -- weird combination, I know but the flavors work for me. I love their drinks there, too. I forgot what that one drink with cucumber is called but it's really good. I order it every time I'm there.

(If I remember correctly, it was a Japanese stall beforehand... not sure what happened when it changed to Korean. A bigger demand for that, probably? After all, Koreans make up the largest percentile of our tourists, yearly.) The food here can range from 250 to 330 pesos, mostly limited to rice meals and a couple noodles. They've also got a selection of Korean drinks. Personally, I really love the samgyupsal gui, which is really just pork belly on rice. Although at times the quality fluctuates (like the pork is a bit too hard, or not too tender) I find that it's one of their better tasting dishes-- especially if you're not into the spicy Korean flavors. I also liked the Kimchi fried rice... better tasting than the one in Lucky Noodles, but, sometimes, also lacks in a Kimchi kick.

Interior's another thing; very well-lit, inviting with a sunset palette and lively vibe despite us being the first customers. The crowd started building up later on and when we left, a number of tables were already filled. FOOD Since this was a first-time visit, we focused on the pork options since there were already 8 to choose from (and 2 for chicken). Unfortunately, we had no more room for chicken either because we were SO FULL from all the delicious meats and banchan (side dishes). Skirt Meat and Rack were the most meaty while the Pork Belly, if cooked right, would give ya a nice chicharon experience! Cheeks were actually cute and very interesting to eat. We made sure to cut them into smaller pieces midway, because they are curled up like me when I sleep sideways. Gotta get all angles cooked! Cooking, overall, was so fun and we took turns doing it so the other could have more time to eat; teamwork! Free spicy soup was available but I passed on that and focused more on the fish cake-type of banchan plus the cheese dip for the meats. This place offers very satisfying options! SERVICE Everyone did very well! They were easy to call for assistance regarding the grilling surface, refills and bill payment. Knowledge of the menu was also apparent.

TLDR: (really like 4.5 stars, if you're a stickler about service). Food is delicious and so fresh…read morebut service was a bit slow/forgetful. No music was on, multiple separate dining areas so it felt a bit disjointed and we had view of airport/freeway (which was actually kind of interesting). Hard liquor, beer and wine available. My husband and I spent this past month traveling abroad. The first part of our trip was actually in Korea (Seoul and Busan) and the last part was spent throughout the Philippines. We love Korean BBQ and couldn't get enough so, on our last night in Manila, we stayed at the Sheraton by the airport and went to their Korean BBQ restaurant Oori. I have to say at first I was skeptical. KBBQ in the Philippines after having it in Korea? A restaurant by the airport AND in a hotel? In my experiences, airports and hotels are not known for good food. HOWEVER, the restaurant was clean, spacious and stylish; the table was set nicely with waters and hot tea, and the selection of KBBQ dishes was great: beef, pork and seafood items, all coming with a fresh salad, banchan and greens. The best thing is, there's something for everyone on the menu! Not just KBBQ. And everything looked tasty. I contemplated a seared whitefish that looked amazing, a soy sauce marinated chicken with veggies, but there were plenty of other sides and entree type meals to choose from. What we ordered: KBBQ Australian Wagyu MB 9 US Short Rib Kimchi pancake Bulgogi kimbap Steamed mandu White rice Sadly, the kimbap and the mandu never made it to the table so we just cancelled it because we got full anyway, but everything else was delicious. They offered to cook our meat, which was very nice, but we preferred to cook our own. Charcoal grill and good ventilation so meat had a little extra flavor but it never got smoky or smelly in the room. Our meal came with all the typical accoutrements one can expect with KBBQ. The banchan were varied and fresh with generous refills. Wagyu was tender and delicious although for MB 9, not as evenly marbled as I would expect. Regardless, it was tender and flavorful and really satisfied my craving. We would have gone back the next day had we not been leaving. Very happy this was our last meal! I was happy with the mellow vibe of the restaurant and the excellent quality of the food. Even though the service could have been better, everyone was still super friendly and relatively attentive. If you are staying in Manila for a long layover or for the night, it's definitely worth going!
