I thoroughly enjoyed the Mexican food here I had a burrito which was humongous and my daughter had empanadas and I don't know how fresh the food is here but is sure dang tasted fresh it was very tasty and wonderful to eat. My two youngest girls had just chicken tenders and fries they tasted good but as for the Mexican food yes it is definitely good I just came from a spot in Fayetteville North Carolina and that Mexican food wasn't even as close too the great tasting food here so yes I highly recommend this spot read more

Tourist road side attraction with good food. I was zipping down the highway and my friend was dying to stop there for breakfast, so we did. When we got there we were the only table in the room, a bit concerning. However, soon after there was a steady stream of people coming in. I had the two egg with meat meal and it was delicious. The bacon had an amazing flavor, as did the sausage. The eggs were eggs, but the nest thing, they had tater tots as a side. Yahoo! My friend had the Mexican omelette and she loved it. I feel like Yelp saved me on this one. I was here staying and when you stay at South of the Border you get 20% off at the Sombrero Restaurant so basically, "when in Rome". I sit down, pull up, Yelp and see all the negative reviews... But then I think, "I will figure something out" I look at the menu at a place called the Sombrero Restaurant and wonder why there are no Mexican options. Why then the entire property is built on a man named Pedro can't I order a taco or nachos?? Literally the menu is full of burgers, hot dogs, and other sandwiches. I ordered a strawberry Paloma which I will say was good. and at the last minute just ordered some mozzarella sticks because I felt like i needed to order something. And honestly, they were good too, i can't lie. But the crazy thing is with tip i still spent like $25. How in the world? And for ambiance? There is none. It's so lackluster inside. Like a doctor's office waiting room has better vibes than inside of this place. I did see the salad bar off to the side but that was a definite no for me. We had not been to South of the Border in more than 30 years. Being so close to it on our way north, and being lunchtime, we had to stop. In the past, we shopped only. This was our first time eating in the restaurant. We learned that this restaurant was built on the Drive-In spot, so we could not have eaten here 30 years ago. During the pandemic, masks were required for staff and patrons. Social distancing was enforced, and there was no salad bar. Menus were disposable, too. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. Only Pepsi products were served, Husband prefers Coke, but he got a Diet Pepsi. I got the tap water, which was cold and good. I ordered the Taco Salad. Husband got the chopped steak with fries and corn. Our utensils came prepackaged - napkin, fork, knife and spoon with salt and pepper. We liked the Mexican music and kitschy decor, especially the stained glass lampshades. The bathrooms were labeled hombres and senoritas. In the bathroom, the ceramic sinks had fish or hacienda scenes. Sweet! Our food was very good and filling. The chopped steak was cooked perfectly, and the taco meat was endless. Okay I get it... blah blah not authentic... but let me set the scene for you... it's a cold night when we braved to emerge from the campground to take in all the glory that is South of the Border... how could we have known with a giant neon sign of the beloved Pedro that our gastrointestinal systems were in for quite an event... our expectations were low as were the number of people in the restaurant... we went to the cashier and asked to be seated, the cashier pointed inside and told us to follow the hostess... the hostess upon seeing us SPRINTED out of sight... THE GAME IS AFOOT! After a brisk ten steps we caught up to her (this place isn't very big) and secured what I only could describe as a retired Jenga set... luckily a wayward block of wood steadied our malfunctioning table... Our waitress was attentive but a bit on the quite side... paper menus were distributed and the drink orders taken... BTW who serves Icehouse as a beer option? Not knocking it... but wow! Opted for Diet Pepsi and sweet tea for the Mrs... We ordered the most popular app in Latin America... cheese sticks... I ordered the Burritos Deluxe both with beef, the Mrs ordered the chimichangas... both beef as well... Approx 40 minutes later after watching a large party who got there after us and getting their food quickly all while downing round after round of Corona (for the sake of this story I wish they were swilling the afore mentioned Icehouse) we finally got our food! The burritos tasted like I made them... and before you think that's a good thing, trust me, it's not... they were edible and I was hungry, so in the mouth hole they went... The chimichangas for the Mrs were not as good, its as if I had also made those too, again not a good thing... plus she got one chicken and one beef instead of both beef like she ordered, but it did not affect the taste as both of them were awful All in all as much as I love the quirky South of the Border, I did not love this meal... if you are starving then by all means good luck, but just be aware you may be in a campground bathroom stall writing a similar review, lamenting your poor life choice read more

This place is pathetic and depressing. Save your time and money and go somewhere else. We asked leaving guests how the food was, and they replied the burger was ok... We wondered but went in anyways. The menu has nothing Mexican about it. Burgers, fries, chicken wings...the usual fried stuff. No queso, tacos or anything else that you would expect in a Mexican restaurant. We have stayed at SOB on many occasions and find the motel pleasant and clean. However, today we ate at the sombrero restaurant and we're very disappointed. The salad bar was decent, but an order of grisly ribs doused in BBQ sauce and the overly exaggerated "big" burger were not up to par...even by McDonald's or golden corral standards. And the price? $48 plus tip. SOB should capitalize on all of their "Mexican" advertising that you see for miles and miles along I-95 and invest in a good Mexican restaurant instead of relying strictly on drive-by tourist traffic read more

There were about 15 other empty tables in the resturant but we had to wait awkwardly for 3 minutes beside people trying to eat while they cleaned off this particular table. After being seated the waitress came and set our silverware down on the table. She set it down touching the part that we would be eating with. Yes, she was holding the silverware on the eating side. If Taco Bell and Taco Bueno wanted to get together and make a crappy Mexican version of Ryan's or Furr's Cafeteria, this is it. We are seasoned connoisseurs of roadside oddities, so we are prepared for train wrecks, and seek them out for entertainment religiously. *Famlies, the staff here is friendly and your very picky toddler will probably eat anything off this menu. The food sucks, but you get a good amount of it. Your tortilla chips taste like Dollar Store Tostitos knock-offs, and the salsa tastes like Pace Picante sauce. The chicken quesadilla was prepared with lettuce and tomato before it was cooked, but the most entertaining part of our dining experience was seeing other diners' reactions to...everything. The table next to us asked for queso, and the waitress politely said that she didn't know what it was. The Hispanic family across from us looked like someone told them that Santa wasn't real, as their food was served at their table. Why just two stars if we were so entertained? This place is kinda like Dick's Last Resort. You don't go here for the food, you go to be entertained, but the entertainment doesn't come from the staff, it's in the sad, disappointed faces of the other patrons. Got a 10 oz steak and ordered medium well but came out raw. Once it was corrected, it was excellent! It came with peas but they never drained it. I told the waitress and she asked if I should swap it out. No, as a waitress you should see it was soaking in water and ask the cook to drain it! Mashed potatoes were good and the home made soup was excellent. Ordered a hot dog but it was way too salty! Thank god the steak was good and enough to give some to my friend. If you're going to eat at the Sombrero Restaurant to say you've eaten at South of the Border, don't waste your time. I should have read the reviews before eating here but since we were spending the night, it was within walking distance of our room. Kids burgers for my twins, a beef taco meal for my oldest daughter and a Chimichanga meal for me. Soft drinks, water and a Michelob Ultra for me. Total check was $40.31, including tax, but not tip. Our server was friendly and polite, but also seemed to double as the cleaning crew. Following our order, she began mopping the restaurant - including the area by our table - with a strong disinfectant type cleaner. It was only when I mentioned to her that my daughter was irritated by the smell did she stop. Food came and the kids burgers were overcooked. Tacos and Chimichanga had no taste. Our server brought over hot sauce and sour cream in mini plastic cups upon complaint. We weren't seated far from the salad bar - flies and all. After a long day on the road, I inquired about an adult beverage. With the exception of beer and wine, the Sombrero Restaurant had very little to chose from. Most of the drinks I ordered - such as a Bacardi and Coke or a Mojito - were not available. I was able to order a Michelob Ultra, but had to pick it up at the bar. Speaking of the bar, there were several travel size bottles of liquor adorning the wall. Strange that an actual bar would serve hard liquor in it's most expensive format. Pure tourist trap is the Sombrero Restaurant. With the exception of two other tables, this place was empty. I'm not sure why it took 25 minutes for our food to arrive given these circumstances. I've waited 30 years since I first saw South Of The Border in 1990 on my way from Miami to Montreal to finally make it to this road side diversion. After reading all the sour reviews about The Sombrero Room, I braced myself for a no bueno food fiesta. But man, not to dump on my fellow Yelperos, but come on.... lighten up señores! I mean, really! Ok so this is not gourmet Mexican fare, but this compound is clearly kitsch, and your expectations should be appropriately in check. We're in the middle of the Covid pandemic so the room was pretty vacant, as was the staff. The cashier did double duty as hostess, there was one server, one lady busing tables and I don't know how many mariachis minding the kitchen. By its appearance, and by that I mean it's design, the place was probably last renovated in the 70s or 80s and oozed nostalgia. But I'll say this, it was immaculately clean. I went to use the restroom and was pleasantly surprised by its "spotless" condition and fresh sent. Trips to bathroom at the Delano and Ritz Carlton hotels in South Beach have left me more pissed off than relieved on some festive nights. The restaurant took all necessary precautions to look after their patrons during the pandemic, from masked staffers to throw-away menus, all the way to our disposable, sealed utensils, or as our server referred to them "chop sticks". Incidentally, Sharon, our southern belle server, was a charmer with a sharp wit and treated us as if we were dining in her Mexican hacienda. She was half the fun. I ordered the beef chimichangas and my partner the beef, chicken and bean enchiladas. They were mindfully plated with portions of arroz mejicano, refried beans with cheese, and ramekins of sour cream, salsa, lettuce and tomatoes. Portions were almost enough for two and the prices about half of what some pendejos charge at their high-brow Mexican mansions. To the food. It was good. But just the same way you don't go to Burger King expecting a Wagyu burger from Wolfgang Puck's, don't expect to come to this Sombrero expecting an Elizabethan head piece. Listen to me bro, the food is good. Plain and simple. It tasted good, and after eight and a half hours of driving, I was happy to sit and have a good meal, at a decent price, with a hospitable staff someplace other than a rest stop that looked the same as the one I walked into 500 miles ago. (Actually there were two of them, Pedro and Pancho (really?) and they collectively called them Pedro.) So, if you are thinking you can get great Mexican food, just remember you are in the South. (There actually looked like some authentic places along the highway in the smaller towns, but clearly for the more adventurous.) One of the original parts of the "South of the Border" complex, the Sombrero is handling the "new normal" with aplomb. They enforce social distances by closing every other booth/table. The staff follows current guidelines by wearing masks and gloves, and also requires mask wear by customers. The disposable menus are printed up with the full menu of the restaurant with no omissions. Our server was quite cheerful and obviously glad to have us there. The food was delicious and generously priced. A full lunch cost maybe $20 for two of us. We were glad for the semi-enclosed booth. We enjoyed the bit of privacy as we took a break from the road on a sweltering day. Easy to get in and out, with plenty of parking, this place is a must stop when rolling North or South. We had the "all you can eat" bar, very good variety of salads and toppings. Taco soup was amazing!
