A very quaint underground record store! They only allow about 8 people in at a time. I loved it and found it by accident on my way to another place. They had a great variety of vinyls to choose from!

This is my absolute favorite place to find authentic records in the city! Som Records is ran by a super knowledgeable owner who knows the ins and outs of the music industry across all genres. You'll be able to find old and new records at his shop. Add this cute basement record store to your list while sightseeing around the 14th and U St area or after hitting the farmers market! Last time I went, I found this Temptations record that's pictured; it is an original vinyl from 1966. Amazing!

Som Records is record collectors record store.... kind of like the phrase "a man's man", this shop is the real deal for finding cool and unique lp's. If you want a visual, go follow them on Instagram to see what's new in that day. You'll be intrigued and maybe moved to stop in and part with your money. What I found was a shop that offered me everything from The Stone Roses to Eric B. & Rakim to a dollar bin and all sorts of in between. I left that day with a live Stone Roses LP, a Love and Rockets 7" and a few other random titles that I just hadn't seen before. The shop itself is relatively small but well organized and most likely turning new stock daily. I spent about 30 minutes shooting the breeze with the clerk talking about everything from the Guru to R.E.M. to Sharon Jones. The man knew his music and you could tell really enjoyed talking with customers. I'll end this by saying I wish it was located in my neighborhood.

Know what makes me feel really old? I mentioned something about a vinyl record to my neighbor's son (he's 13) and he had no idea what I was talking about (??!!). Thankfully, Som knows vinyl. SoM's owner Neal is a super cool guy- he DJs at Saint-Ex every other Thursday. You won't find any Cd's or MP3s for sale at Som, but you will find unusual rock discs as well as hard to find jazz and soul records. The majority of the LPs here are used, but there is a "new release" section with artists like For sale hunters like me, there is a dollar bin, and on the other extreme-- a section with higher dollar items. The collector's stuff is super rare and actually costs a little less than you would pay for it on, say..ebay.

Small basement shop of new and used vinyl. Got my knees and hands dirty picking through stacks and left with a dozen used vinyl for $12.

Love it. This is my favorite place to shop for music (tied with Red Onion). Good prices, great selection and nice staff. A winner.

And the event was free! This reminded me of the Pennsylvania Ave. Tower Record Days in the early 90's, when all you had to do was show up and it was a party onsite. Damn, I miss the old DC. Anyways, I reserved a ticket on DICE, when I got there no one asked about a ticket, which was great. They were just happy people came! You could choose from a button, sticker, and some other promotional item. Of course they had the vinyl for sale, I did have a chance to check out their selection of records, appeared pretty diverse, however, I am not a collector of vinyl so, don't take my word for it. The staff, of two men were hospitable, showed me to the listening room, a large area in the back where people were sitting around having casual conversation. It was around 25 people or so. The sound system was good. I'd already heard the album that morning and in my unsolicited opinion my favorite tracks so far are No Reply and My Old Ways. I'm waiting on the remixes and collabs. Met some cool people. Didn't feel rushed. They looped it and played the album again for the late comers, which I appreciate. There was a drawing where two guests won a free album and some other promotional items. Byrdland does listening parties regularly, so get ready if you're a Florence & The Machine fan (event already posted). Byrdland has picked up on the much needed, meet- in- person over music tradition that we've all been missing. And I love it!

Disappointed with their small selection of CDs, I thought they would have much more. Still,…read moreextremely cool interior and tons of variety.

It's in Union Market just a few doors down from the new F1 Arcade... parking right nearby may be tricky, but there's always the Union Market parking lot and more options if you're willing to walk a bit. It may not be ideal on really cold days. They have a spacious outdoor seating area, and entry is easy -- just show your ID, ticket, and you're good to go. I'm not sure if it was because of the show, but there were just a few tables along the closest wall and near the stage. I would see there were five to six high tables total. Before ordering anything, I grabbed the only table left -- I had a feeling the others coming would appreciate that. I had already eaten, but I absolutely had to have the jerk chicken sandwich, it looked too good. I ordered it at the bar, was given a buzzer, and it was ready in about 10 minutes or so. It was indeed tasty! A bit pricey to just be the sandwich and nothing else, but it was good. The bar is fully stocked, and there are water cups at the far end to refill at your leisure. The show itself was really fun -- vocals and the sounds of the instruments were excellent. Certain vocals got drowned out by certain instruments, but that's just how sound works, you know? All in all I'd come back to this venue, it was a vibe with the disco ball overhead! I don't mind it, but for the less tech savvy, I could see the dependence on an app to retrieve the ticket for the concert being an inconvenience for some. There was no way to pull up the ticket without downloading Dice and activating the QR code on there.
