August 21, 2017 was a day to remember- a solar eclipse here in Charleston, SC! For the eclipse, I went to the viewing party + Riverdogs game at Joe Riley Park. There was no traffic to speak of from Way-Out-West-Ashley into downtown. I parked in an overflow lot at the corner of Lockwood and Broad and took a shuttle to the park (the lot was full three cars ahead of me!). The air conditioned school bus arrived quickly, loaded us up, and dropped us off directly in front of the stadium. As soon as I walked into Joe Riley Park, I was handed glasses and a free moon pie. NASA exhibits were there, and I enjoyed watching the eclipse with my friends. A lot of people left before the game, but we stuck around through the weather delays and had fun. I expected every seat in the stadium to be full, but it didn't feel crowded. The Joe did a great job with the event. Traffic coming home was a breeze. I drove all over town this weekend, from Mt. P to downtown to Johns Island and Summerville, and I live in West Ashley. Traffic was no worse than normal, except in front of Krispy Kreme...

My husband booked the Charleston Harbor Tours Eclipse Tour boatride as soon as he saw an ad for it last December. Good moves, because it sold out by late March. I had the pleasure of meeting the final ticketholder as she charged her phone and kindly my hubby's phone in the Marina laundry area while we waited to board yesterday morning. The Internet had told her there was only 1 ticket left and she needed 2, as it was her anniversary present to her husband! So she called directly and the CSA on the phone made it happen and sold her 2, and our tour was full. Our group on the boat was so fun and into it, our Captain Bobby had trivia for us with prizes and was a wealth of knowledge on the tour, but was mouth-agape with us at the totality of our eclipse. No one is an expert on that, until now. Our skies were pretty blue and clear in the beginning, but clouded over a bit as we headed out to the Harbor. But we got there and hung out to see the beginning loud and crystal clear, glasses mandatory. Then as it moved towards totality, we had drifting clouds that sometimes obscured our view, making it possible to look with your regular eyes (I think I might have a burn), and then it was darkish and you didn't need the glasses and then you did as the sun returned. It was definitely a trip worth taking. Everyone from everywhere (though abundantly white, but from across the nation - we met people from Montana and New York and Tennessee and all kinds of other places!) on a boat to experience The Eclipse. We became united as brothers and sisters in this incredible moment. Many became Facebook "friends" and sweared to share pics. It was an amazing, bonding event facilitated by Charleston Harbor Tours, and the crew was 100% onboard the effort! Thanks, guys and gals, for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

An amazing experience in our own backyard! The storm clouds even stayed away just long enough for us to enjoy it. I bought my special solar eclipse (legit) glasses early from a local brewery, thank you Ghost Monkey! So we were prepared and ready. We started checking it out at around 2pm and wow, we could see the moon moving over it. So with chairs in the yard, the sun shining, and weather holding out, we sat and watched. We just soaked it all in. And it did not disappoint! What a wonderful experience! The moon moved into that final position, and then that moment of totality! Yup, the temperature dropped some, the slight darkness was there and we took the glasses off then to see it. What an experience! Thanks to the sun and moon, they performed so well for us and everyone. Thanks to fellow Yelpers for sharing your pics!

Not a great picture - but if you look hard enough, you can see the moon is covering part of the sun.

All I can say is WOW! I have never seen a total solar eclipse before, and being the science geek that I am, I was so excited about being in the "path of totality". It was an exciting, beautiful experience and I am so happy that the clouds cleared just in time to view the total eclipse. I went to my parents' house in Isle of Palms. They live right off of Morgan Creek, and it was the perfect spot for viewing. We went to the bridge in Wild Dunes right over the creek, and that gave us an unobstructed view of the sky. We did become a little nervous because as the partial eclipse was happening, it seemed the clouds started rolling in and covered our view of the sun. Their house also has a second story porch and that worked really well too in terms of viewing. Luckily, the clouds cleared just in time for totality! You could hear people cheering as everything went dark. I am so happy that I was able to view it in person - I have friends that live in Summerville, and unfortunately didn't see anything because of a thunderstorm! Trying to leave IOP took a while afterwards due to the crowds - but it was totally worth it!

AAAAMAzing!!! Once in a lifetime opportunity to be in the exact right spot to watch such a unique phenomenon. I watched from on top of the North cut Memorial bridge and had the perfect view. A bit of clouds acted like a partial filter at just the right time. I felt so lucky to be part of the experience, and hope it is a rebirth for all who need it.

My daughter captured the eclipse perfectly from The Battery in Charleston. Not overcrowded and the clouds perfectly timed their separation for photos!

I've been planning for this event since January 2017 when I requested the day off from work. There was no way that I could possibly work on the day of an event that hasn't happened in 99 years. I planned accordingly, and purchased legit solar eclipse glasses well before the prices spiked, moon pies, sunny-d, sun chips (assorted flavors), burgers, chicken thighs (marinated in a light and dark sauce), and other various items that fit into my theme. The day of the event was exciting from start to finish, with partly cloudy skies, we were still treated to most of the eclipse leading up to the point of totality, but after that, the thunderstorms came in and blocked out the rest of the afternoon. I was like a kid in a candy shop as the sky began to darken, with my camera snapping pictures, and everyone in awe of what was happening before our eyes. I can't wait for the next one! Until then I'll just look back on my pictures and time-lapse video to remember the good times that were had by all.

The best photo I could get, looks like a diamond ring! It was awesome!!!

Was the most amazing experience, my very first time, unforgettable.. I have really enjoyed seeing all of my fellow yelper photos!!

Weather in West Ashley wasn't ideal, but we enjoyed watching totality from the comfort of our backyard--avoiding traffic and tons of people.

After about two minutes of totality, the piercing light crept out from behind the moon and it was back to the glasses.

The houses are located north of Tradd St. and south of Elliott St. on East Bay Street, that is, 79 to 107 East Bay Street. In 1931, Dorothy Haskell Porcher Legge purchased a section of these, house numbering 99 through 101 East Bay, and began to renovate them. She chose to paint these houses pink based on a colonial Caribbean color scheme. Other owners and future owners followed suit, creating the "rainbow" of pastel colors present today. The coloring of the houses helped keep the houses cool inside as well as give the area its name. By 1945, most of the houses had been restored. The name "Rainbow Row" was later coined. It is a popular tourist attraction and is one of the most photographed parts of Charleston. My family and I visited the Rainbow Row this past summer while we were visiting family in town. We had previously visited on our last visit to the area but wanted to visit again because the houses are just breathtaking to look at. They're very photogenic! Aside from the pastel colored houses, the whole stretch of the downtown area from Waterfront Park to the Battery is a very interesting area to explore. It's loaded with historic buildings, monuments, historical plaques, and cobblestone streets. You might get lucky and even see a horse-drawn carriage riding by. We highly recommend anyone visiting Charleston to see Rainbow Row!

Don't get me wrong, the homes are beautiful and the history behind them are rich, but it is definitely overhyped. I was also surprised how different it looked in person compared to photos online; I don't know if its the photoshop making the houses look so vibrant and colorful, but the real thing seemed a bit more dull. If you're already in the area, you should definitely see it for yourself, cause you've got nothing to lose. But don't go out of your way to come here, or you may be slightly disappointed like I was.

Dear reader,…read more Charleston City Market is exactly the sort of place that makes casual browsing turn into a full-fledged expedition. It is full of jewelry, handmade gifts, local art, and all manner of treasures, and so many visitors seem to love the same thing: the sheer variety and the chance to find something that actually feels special rather than mass-produced. That absolutely tracked for us. The Market itself has been a Charleston staple for over 200 years, and it still feels lively, local, and full of character. What really stood out for me was an artist who went by Andy, who had a collection of pop art vinyl records that was genuinely fantastic. Using mixed media, he created pieces featuring different singers, musicians, and bands on old vinyl records, which felt both clever and beautifully done. I chose an amazing Mary J. Blige piece that was also hand-painted, and I was absolutely thrilled with it. The value of your dollar was VERY worth getting one (or more)! Cash only! Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable wander and a very good place to find art, gifts, and a few things you did not know you needed. I would happily go back.
