I posted my first review about 8 months ago and after Solanos left me hanging. No one came to pick up the chair I wanted reupholstered and refinished at our agreed upon time without any communication. Well almost 3 months ago, out of the blue someone reached out to me asking about the chair and what I wanted done (maybe they saw my first review, haha). They were speaking as though they already had the chair so I was CONFUSED. I clarified that no one ever came. They apologized profusely and I guess I was in a second chance sort of mood so I made another plan for pickup. They actually came to get the chair this time. I wasn't sure about the next steps so I called and emailed them about when I could come down to the store to choose a fabric. We made a Saturday appointment time for me. I will say there seemed to be a pretty varied selection of fabric styles which I appreciated but they do need to update their books because some were out of stock (and it's always quite annoying and disappointing when you spend time picking out something, you think it's perfect and you're excited then you're told sorry that's not in stock). We ended up going with our plan B choice. They only accept cheques and money orders and the invoice said I needed to pay within 30 days of receiving the invoice (which they emailed to me immediately after my appointment). When the 30 days was approaching I called and emailed about when I could bring in the cheque. Eventually someone called me back and said that only applied to furniture left we with them over a certain amount of time. (I was confused because that's not what the invoice said but whatever). After another few weeks, I emailed for updates. I had to do this twice before someone responded saying "the end of next week"...spoiler: we actually got it a few weeks after that. I asked about pickup and someone told me I could come for it during a certain time, I reminded them that we agreed that they would deliver it and the cost of delivery had been included in the invoice - we agreed on a Friday between 11 am and 1pm. At 3:15 I called for an update and was told it was coming in about 45 minutes, there was another drop off before me. Later the driver called to check in noting that there was traffic. the chair eventually got to us around 4:30 pm. We gave the driver the cheque and that was that. The next day we did get a check in call. To be honest, I am not sure I would use this company again. They did do a fine job with the chair but I just felt like I was left hanging a lot of the time (emails not responded to etc.) and I had to be the one trying to check in about the process, next steps and expectations. I think part of me was also a little salty that no discount or any acknowledgement for my trouble was (Like maybe waiving the delivery fee considering all the shenanigans) BUT it does seem like a small family business and things happen. read more

When Solano saw my review, they contacted me. After I told them the problems, they came out, picked up my cushions, and completely remade them. The cushions now fit properly and are extremely comfortable. I have to give Solano's a lot of credit for caring about their customers' satisfaction. And Darcy is still great to deal with. read more

Absolutely horrible experience. I have an old wood frame sofa that I wanted resprung because the springs are all rusted and one had popped out of the frame. Dency quoted about $400 for the respringing, plus delivery and pickup fees, and I went with them. After two weeks the sofa came back with its same old rusted springs, and one new hook installed in the frame. They bent the spring attaching to that hook straighter so that now the whole middle of the sofa sags because it's been made looser. They offered to take it back and actually respring it but, honestly, I don't trust them to do the work and just paid for the one hook they put in plus delivery...who says they'll respring a sofa and then simply DO NOT replace any of the springs? They say it was a communication problem and the description of the work to be done just didn't get to the person doing the work, so...you know, be aware that they don't seem to have any checks in place to catch improper work. In addition, they didn't seem to take any care in handling the sofa and it came back with new scratches all over the wood, meaning I paid $200 to have my sofa damaged. Literally the quality of the repair was what I had considered doing myself with a quick trip to Home Depot for the hook. DO NOT trust your furniture to Solano's. I will never work with them again, I can't believe the poor quality of workmanship, the utter lack of care they took with my furniture. read more

I have used Solano's for several upholstery projects and absolutely love their services! The fabric is wonderful and the pieces are beautifully crafted. The sewing in particularly is fantastic. They also complete projects very promptly. read more

If you want something made or re-upholstered that is of decent quality or better, DO NOT USE SOLANOS. My story and situation are long, but I ended up spending close to $7,000 for a sofa that looks and feels sub par to something that I could have purchased at IKEA. Every sub par details has been documented (all though there were too many to post). We tried to get Modesto and Dency to fix the sofa and they refused. I have to now pay an additional $3k to a carpenter and other upholsterer to fix the mess they made and I still won't have the sofa that was designed. Examples of the poor quality can be found in the photos below. Cushions don't align, garmet thread, not upholstery thread was used to sew together the cushions, design dimensions were not followed, cushion fill was supposed to be premium down and is practically all foam, there is no connector connecting the two pieces of my sectional...I could go on. Its possible that their work was better in the past, but Modesto is spread way to thin and pre occupied with other business ventures and not overseeing his employees who are producing terribly poor quality work. We had a new banquette installed in our dining room and I went to Solano's to have them make cushions for it. Dancy was extremely friendly and knowledgeable which was helpful to me as I had never had anything like this custom made before. Dancy and Luis came and made measurements at the house. It took about 4-5 weeks and the cushions are PERFECT! Dancy delivered them herself and I couldn't be happier! I would DEFINITELY give them my repeat business! read more

I brought some fabric to Solanos' to design a very unique cushion for an antique Asian chair. Denzy walked me through all of the options including seam, cushion thickness, zipper etc. The service was fantistic and cushion turned out beautiful. I would definitely bring upholstering work to Solano's in the future. read more

Excellent customer service. Dency is professional, courteous, friendly and very knowledgeable. She went the extra yard to assist with the right fabric type, pattern and color. Craftsmanship is top-notch- truly of the highest quality. Delivery was handled with extreme care and delivered on the date promised- just in time for Christmas. My sofa and chairs are gorgeous!! Ruined my dresser, lied about service and never apologized once. **Yelp won't let me leave no stars....if I could leave negative stars I would.... I had my antiques dresser picked up for repair. This had been my father's til his passing 2 years ago, I won't get into how much this particular piece meant to me but for over 2 years I would not part with it for fear something would go wrong....It had not been used in ages, it was really just a beautiful piece. The drawers all stuck, one drawer's track was missing a nail so the drawer went in lopsided. There wasn't much to do but I hoped I would be able to use it. There is...sorry, was a mirror on top, perched between 2 swan like posts. I discovered Solano's last year when my mom needed cushions recovered. At our initial drop off Dency (I thought the owner but she has since told me she is not..) had a few older furniture pieces in the shop. I asked about them & was told they do restoration too. One dresser in the shop reminded me of my dad's. Fast forward to last month. I was moving and thought it a perfect time to have Solano's pick up the dresser (this is a service they offer for a fee each way) repair it & then have it delivered to my new place. When I called to arrange pick up I was incredibly clear on how anxious this made me. Turned out I wouldn't be home when they could come, that my son would be. I said to her that is probably for the best since I'll be a wreck watching them take it down 3 flights of stairs. She said they have all the supplies they need for this type of move and I should not worry. Then, the call came. My son calls to tell me that he's 99% sure they broke the mirror when putting it on the truck. I immediately called but got a voice mail. No return call. 2 days later I call again, left another message about how worried I was. Still no return call. On the 4th day I emailed them on the thread I used earlier. The next day I get a call....saying the dresser was completely fine, not to worry, they had gone away but they were back & the dresser should be done by the end of the week. A week later (the 3-4 day job was now at 2+ weeks) I get a call that it's done & to call back to arrange delivery. For some odd reason I said I wanted to come see it before I have it brought to me.... When I walked in Dency greeted me & immediately pointed out the mirror, which she said they had removed as a moving precaution. When I picked it up the original backing fell off to reveal a brand new mirror, stickers & new caulking all around. Sort of in shock I went to the dresser...long story short, she pulled out the drawers to show me 'the work'. Zero work.... the drawers came apart as she rambled on about gluing every piece...the drawer with the biggest issue still broken. She had quoted me $200, so I asked what the $200 was to be for, glue? Her answer was 'well that's what he told he did...' At that point I said 'forget it, you've done nothing, I just want my dresser back, I'm not paying for anything since you did nothing.' Talk about the delivery fee came up & that's when I turned & saw the mirror. I reminded her of our conversation about the mirror, me thinking it had been broken & her telling me no, that was not the case. Then, pointing out the new mirror & caulking. Again, she said 'oh, I don't know, that just what they told me...' Really? I took the mirror with me, the dresser was returned 2 days later. One of the smaller drawers that was fine is now broken, none of the repairs I asked for were done, the mirror hardware is missing so I have to fix that myself, the mirror backing was ruined when it was removed so now it doesn't stay on and again, the original antique, slightly off color mirror has been replaced. And not one apology.... disgraceful & bad business.... read more

I had stopped in to another upholsterer prior to visiting Solano's, they had come highly recommended, Solano's had mixed reviews. I can only tell you I'm so pleased I found Solano's by accident, while searching for material across the street. Denzy was extremely knowledgable, had excellent suggestions and spent the time with me so that the end product was fabulous. The workmanship is impeccable. Had I gone with my original choice I would have been disappointed. Think I'll stop reading reviews and go with my instincts. read more

I wish I could give 5 stars. The workmanship and fabric selection seem excellent, Dency is very helpful. But delivery has been a nightmare. Not only did the truck arrive 2 hours after the delivery window resulting in my losing a half day of work, but the WRONG CHAIR arrived. Solanos needs to modernize their communications and tracking so that Dency knows exactly where deliverables are at any point in time and she can keep the customers informed on exactly when their furniture will be delivered. read more

This review is regarding an attempt to get a desk repaired and refinished and a chair refinished. Upholstery services were NOT requested and thus, my rating is ONLY for furniture repair and refinishing. BEWARE!!! My initial experience was great. An employee picked up the furniture on 8/19/11 and he correctly documented the requested work on the invoice. Unfortunately, after turnover to "the warehouse" the nightmare began. First attempt at refinishing the chair meant the chair was delivered with incomplete paint coverage and the finish was not hi-gloss as requested. They agreed to strip and finish the chair, again. On the second attempt, the chair was delivered with enamel drips, spots of a matte finish and the wrong color. The owner's resolution was that they used the correct hue as requested, they would sand out the enamel drips and the matte finish appeared because it is the underside of the chair. I indicated his resolution was unacceptable and a refund is due. We will shortly be heading to court since a refund was not provided. The first and only attempt at the repair and refinish of the desk was a joke. The desk was delivered in a stain finish when a dark grey paint finish was requested. In addition, the desk was not stabilized as requested. A refund was issued for this disaster. I wasted travel time (South Philadelphia and North Phiadelphia locations), gas money and my patience by contracting services with this company. read more

We had an 1860s New York Empire sofa which had exquisite woodwork but the upholstery was in tatters. We walked into Solano's and met Dency, sent her pictures of the furniture and a description of what we wanted done, and got prompt estimates which seemed very reasonable. It was almost a year later that we finally got around to getting upholstery that we wanted, and at the same time we also dug out two Eastlake 1880s Victorian armchairs which also needed reupholstering and some minor woodwork refinishing. Dency got us prices on reupholstering and refinishing the two chairs also, and the old price on the sofa still held! The work was done surprisingly quickly. We were even allowed to go to the warehouse and inspect when the project was still in progress, which we did, but we were so happy with the results that there was nothing more to be requested. On delivery, the woodwork on all the pieces looked like new, and the upholstery was masterfully mounted so that the patterns worked perfectly AND the pieces were now much more comfortable to sit on! The pieces for sure raised the bar in our Victorian living room, which they have truly transformed with their grace and charm. To top it all off, Dency gave us some gold fabric for new bolster pillows for the sofa, made the pillows, then shortened them to just the way we wanted them, and those bolsters practically steal the show! Our experience with Solano's was really great! The service was friendly, helpful, and prompt, and the quality was absolute tops! Thank you Solano's! read more

We have had three or four experiences with this company, most of them under the ownership of the firm's founding individual and lately under that of his son. The first experiences were excellent. Unfortunately, that was then...this is now. Our most recent experience was without doubt the most time-consuming and disastrous one we have ever experienced regarding furniture. We had to make between 8 - 10 trips to their shop to try and straighten things out and they were never done to our satisfaction. The workmanship was generally poor. Worse, we had to point out the flaws every time they said the furniture was finished. The amount of misinformation was staggering. In the end, we accepted the less than satisfactory final iteration of their work simply to preserve what little sanity remained. Avoid at all costs, which are substantial!!! read more

I returned to Solanos this summer to do another job for me. About 2 years ago I had them take a piece of needlework I found and make it into a pillow for a chair. They did excellent work on that project. So I came back to them when I needed a host of wood furniture restoration done-- antique Dining room table and 6 leafs, restoration of a small bentwood chair seat, restoration of a small 19th c. side table and reglue an antique chair . The work was done very well, exactly as I hoped. They gave an estimate and kept to it, and took and brought back my furniture in less than 2 weeks. I think they are great. read more

If I could give NO stars, I would. You should skip this place and pick another upholsterer that will create what you ask for before making up items for you. My mom died five years ago and I've held on to two pieces of her clothing to have made into throw pillows. I stopped in Solano's and they were so kind to help me make them. They wrote down my specs, took the example I provided and said they would call to finalize once the upholsterer saw the materials. Instead, they went ahead and made the pillows without my consent and to sizes I did not want or ask for. This is fabric I cannot buy again; it was my mom's clothing. I have been so upset by their lack of professionalism and I am beyond DISAPPOINTED. I asked the owner to help remedy the situation by making a complimentary seat cushion I had also asked for but he said no and only offered a small discount. I rarely write Yelp reviews, good or bad, but I cannot let this happen to someone else when there are so many other upholsterers. read more
