I typically only have Doner when my wife is out of town for a while, because she hates it when I eat raw onions. As such, I haven't had the chance to really look for good doner in Munich so far.
Heading back relatively late yesterday, with my wife out of town, I decided to try another place. I recalled passing Sofra while on a run, and checked on Yelp that it was still open after 9:30, which is pretty good for a random Tuesday evening. Yes, 9:30 isn't that late in general (ESPECIALLY coming from the US/Los Angeles/San Francisco), but I've found that Germany, or at least Munich, shuts down pretty early, when not in the city center.
I just ordered the standard doner sandwich. So far, this has been the best that I've tried in my search for good doner. I've tried the ubiquitous Oliva, and another at the Ostbahnhof previously. Both tasted fine, and were adequate in a pinch, but Sofra's was better. The sandwich was very tasty and flavorful, and the meat was very moist without being overly salty. Additionally, the cost was pretty cheap - 3.90 for the sandwich, and the portion size was perfect. I felt perfectly satiated after eating it, and not terribly bad about eating later in the evening.
Service was pretty good too. Granted, at 9:45 or so on a random Tuesday evening, it wasn't very busy, but the employee was attentive, and fast at making the sandwich as soon as I ordered.
I will continue my search for additional doner kebap places around the city, but will likely make another trip back here at some point. read more
